Wrzesień 1944, kilka dni przed zakończeniem wojny w Finlandii. Przywiązanemu do skały fińskiemu snajperowi Veikko udaje się uciec. Iwan, kapitan Armii Czerwonej, aresztowany przez kontrwywiad, ledwo wyrywa się z niewoli. Obaj znajdują schronienie u lapońskiej kobiety, Anni. Choć są żołnierzami przeciwnych armii, to dla Anni to po prostu mężczyźni.

Set in September 1944 shortly before Finland's withdrawal from World War II, the film lyrically recounts a fateful encounter between an injured, disillusioned Russian soldier named Ivan and a talkative Finnish sniper, Veiko, at the remote farm of a lonely and attractive young Lapp widow. Unable to communicate with each other, the three isolated protagonists nevertheless establish a surrogate and affectionate bond as they cooperate to survive in the harsh frontier. In this Tower of Babel, the three can only reach each other through tone of voice, hand gestures, and body language, but Anni has no trouble convincing the men that she has "an aching below the tummy". Though Veiko is mistakenly thought to be a fascist since he still wears a German uniform, the three gradually form a bond based on mutual need and a common humanity. The Cuckoo is a gorgeously photographed and emotionally resonant film that is more than an anti-war fable; it is a film of transcendent beauty that directly touches the soul.
