Amphibious assault is one of the most difficult challenges in modern warfare. The defender has a natural advantage since the sea poses a formidable natural barrier to most military operations. With the advent of powerful coastal guns and steel-reinforced concrete fortifications, amphibious assault became all the more difficult. But amphibious assault also has it advantages. Coastlines are often long, and it is impossible to defend all locations. If a weak spot can be found, forces can be landed in relative safety. Until World War II, amphibious landings were conducted by improvised means, usually using ship's boats. In World War I, with major amphibious assaults such as Gallipoli. attempts began to develop specialized craft bener suited to amphibious landings, based on river barges. Further experimentation in the 1930s led to a whole range of practical craft from the small LCVP to the large LST. Although these naval craft were essential to modern amphibious assaults, they had one problem. They could only Transport the troops to the water's edge, at which point they could go no further. So there was some interest in amphibian craft, that is, craft that cuuld not only swim ashore, but once reaching the beach, could move on land.

This book is the second volume in a series on armored warfare in the Mid-East over the past several decades. The central focus of these books are the wars involving Israel. Other major conflicts in the region, notably the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, are outside the scope of this series. The coverage of this volume is somewhat different than the preceding volume. The first volume covered four major wars, fought in the ideal tank country of the Sinai desert. During the period covered in this book, Israel has been involved in only one major war involving its armored force, the invasion of Lebanon in 1982. All of its fighting during this period has been in the hilly regions of the Levant which are not as suitable for large scale tank operations, and tanks did not play as central a role as in previous wars. Much of the fighting in Lebanon has taken place between various Lebanese militias, and this book provides a unique record of the unusual assortment of equipment used in the civil war fighting. Since the 1982 war, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) has been involved in many small scale actions in southern Lebanon. These have been anti-guerrilla operations rather than conventional war. Nevertheless they have usually involved the employment of armored vehicles. This book examines the shift from the IDF's tank-heavy force prior to 1973 to the more balanced mechanized force which continues to evolve to this day.

On 22 June 1941, the Wehrmacht with over three million soldiers attacked the Soviet Union. For the invasion the Panzerwaffe managed to field some 3,000 Panzers and were distributed among 19 Panzer-Divisions, 10 motorized infantry divisions, 4 motorized SS divisions, the motorized Grosdeutschland Regiment and a few independent assault gun units. Initially, the Panzer-Divisions achieved great success, however, the vast expanses of terrain its vehicles had to cover; and huge logistical problems, gave the commanders of the Panzer-Divisions serious difficulties, particularly when the winter arrived and the Russians put up stiff resistance. In early February 1941, the Italian Army was on the brink of a disastrous defeat in North Africa. This situation prompted Hitler to send in the Afrikakorps, under the command of Erwin Rommel, who later earned fame as the Desert Fox. The DAK made its first contact with the British forces on 24 February and subsequently pushed the British back to the Halfaya Pass. The British formed the Eighth Army and stopped the German’s advance further into Egypt. With a long supply line, the DAK was forced to retreat due to increasing British attacks. 1941 and 1942 saw both sides fighting a seesawing battle in the Western Desert. Montgomery came to the scene in July 1942 and turned the tide for the British. With the undersupplied Germans pushed back to Tunisia, the Americans landed in Northwest Africa and eventually the Allies liberated North Africa.

The DAK operated many interesting vehicles in North Africa, from self-propelled guns to reconnaissance vehicles to tanks. The book features many unpublished photos of rare German vehicles, and destroyed vehicles from private sources. The 16 color profiles include camouflage and markings of some of these rare vehicles that served in the DAK.

The second volume in our Panzer-Division series. This book covers the German assault on Russia in June 1941 up till end of 1943, after the Battle of Kursk. As usual, the author Robert Michulec traveled around Europe, went through archives and private collections and brings us many unpublished photos.

This book starts off with the invasion of Russia, and then quickly moves on to Operation Typhoon, the assault on Moscow. The bitter Russian winter of 1941-42 caught the ill prepared Germans off guard. Spring came and the muddy Russian road system gave the panzers a lot of headaches. In 1942, the German panzers continue the advance to the Caucasus and the Russian steppes. The battle for Stalingrad was well covered in the book, and the Tigers and Panthers started to appear in the Eastern Front in 1942. The Battle of Kursk was the turning point for the Germans, and many photos are devoted to the great tanks that participated in this battle, such as Tiger, Pz.IV, Marder III, Wespe.
