With the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Eric Tsang, Wong and Lee Kung-lok co-directed the feature film Fu Bo in 2003. The acclaimed feature, marked by Wong’s personal style, centers on the experience of a morgue assistant and features actors Liu Kai-chi, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, Johnson Lee Sze-chit and Eric Tsang.
In 2004, Wong entered the fray of commercial cinema with the triad drama Jiang Hu, which was produced by Tsang, written by Christine To Chi-Long and stars Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung. Wong was named Best New Director at the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards for the film. A year later, he directed Ah Sou (2005), which features newcomer Annie Liu along with stars Karena Lam, Tsang, Anthony Wong and Simon Yam. Lam was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards while Liu was nominated for Best New Performer. Wong later produced Lee Kung-lok’s My Mother is a Belly Dancer (2006) and was one of ten directors who contributed to A Decade of Love (2008)—an omnibus film with ten stories about the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong’s Reunification with China.
Wong’s Revenge: A Love Story (2010), starring Juno Mak, Sora Aoi and Anthony Lau Wing, won him the Best Director award at the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival while Mak was named Best Actor at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. At the 48th Golden Horse Awards, Lau was nominated Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film. In 2011, Wong teamed up with Mak again in Let’s Go!, which also stars Stephy Tang and 1960s star Jimmy Wang Yu. His latest film is the martial arts biopic Once Upon a Time in Shanghai (2014), which was produced by Wong Jing, choreographed by Yuen Wo-Ping and features actors Philip Ng Wan-lung, Andy On Chi-kit and Sammo Hung.
Wong has also shot and edited movie trailers, music videos and commercials. He was involved with the visual design of Chan Hing-kai’s Poker King (2009) and has also directed a stage play.
