Paul van Dyk urodził się w Eisenhüttenstadt we wschodnich komunistycznych Niemczech. Jego rodzice rozwiedli się, gdy miał 3 lata, więc nigdy nie poznał swojego ojca. Opiekowała się nim wyłącznie matka. Paul słuchał zachodniej muzyki takich wykonawców jak The Smiths i New Order przez radio.
