A unique comparative account of the roots of Communist revolution in Russia and China. Steve Smith examines the changing social identities of peasants who settled in St Petersburg from the 1880s to 1917 and in Shanghai from the 1900s to the 1940s. Russia and China, though very different societies, were both dynastic empires with backward agrarian economies that suddenly experienced the impact of capitalist modernity. This book argues that far more happened to these migrants than simply being transformed from peasants into workers. It explores the migrants' identification with their native homes; how they acquired new understandings of themselves as individuals and new gender and national identities. It asks how these identity transformations fed into the wider political, social and cultural processes that culminated in the revolutionary crises in Russia and China, and how the Communist regimes that emerged viewed these transformations in the working classes they claimed to represent.

Communism - Books - Aleksandra Galasińska, Michał Krzyżanowski - Disco...Transformation in Central and Eastern Europe 2009.jpg

This interdisciplinary volume explores the discursive construction of post-1989 social change in Central and Eastern Europe. Encompassing a set of national case studies on countries such as Czech Republic, former East-Germany, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia or other Balkan states, the volume explores processes of post-communist transformation from the point of view of accelerating and unique dynamics of linguistic and discursive practices. Highlighting the micro-macro link, those practices are examined within – as well as at the cross-section of – the public domain (in politics, media, religion or civil society) and the private sphere (within individual experiences of post-communism). Providing in-depth, systematic analysis of discourse in different situations, contributions to the volume analyse diverse forms of social, political, cultural, economic or institutional transformation in post-communist contexts. The analysis points to several differences and similarities between ways in which discourse influences the unprecedented social change across Central and Eastern Europe.

James C. Docherty - Historical Dictionary of Socia lism (1997).jpg

Recent election wins by left of center parties in Western Europe testify to the continued vitality of the tradition of democratic socialism. Socialism has been the leading ideology for social change for over a century. It has been a philosophy, a mass movement, and a substitute religion. It has inspired millions and aroused fear and revulsion in its enemies. It has sought to change the world for the better and in many important respects has done so. Yet socialism remains a paradox. Professing only to do good, great crimes against humanity have been committed in its name. Democratic and egalitarian in theory, it has been used to justify totalitarian dictatorship in practice. This dictionary offers a reliable, comprehensive introduction and guide to this contentious social movement and ideology, examining where it has succeeded and where it has failed. It traces the evolution of socialism from the early nineteenth century up to the present. Unlike other general works on the subject, it is primarily concerned with the democratic tradition of socialism and is careful to differentiate this tradition from those elements of socialism which later became communism. It contains 327 entries and many cross-references which cover not just thinkers, ideas and political parties, but also education, women, literature, and policies. With glossary, chronology, statistical appendix and bibliography.

Ronald Radosh - Red Star Over Hollywood, The Film Colony's Long Romance with the Left (2005).jpg

Until now, Hollywood's political history has been dominated by a steady stream of films and memoirs decrying the "nightmare" of the Red Scare and how it victimized political innocents. But in RED STAR OVER HOLLYWOOD, Ronald and Allis Radosh tell for the first time the "backstory" behind this myth.
The authors show how the Soviet Comintern decided to make the film capitol a prime target in the late 1920s. They follow the lives of Budd Schulberg, Ring Lardner Jr., Maurice Rapf and other young radicals who went to the USSR in the early 1930s, underwent a political conversion experience there, and came back to Hollywood as apostles preaching a Soviet gospel. They take us inside the cells and discussion groups they and other Party members formed, the guilds and unions they tried to take over, and the studios they tried to influence.
The Radoshes not only prove that the members of the Hollywood Party were loyal first and foremost to Joseph Stalin, but show that in fact many of the screenwriters who later became part of the Hollywood Ten succeeded in using films as a propaganda medium in behalf of Soviet cause. One of their most significant successes was the wartime blockbuster Mission To Moscow, whose inside story the authors document in fascinating detail. The Radoshes' are at their best when writing about the blacklist era. They take us inside the Hollywood Communists' strategy sessions as they prepared to testify in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities and show that while others were lionizing them as blameless victims of American nativism and paranoia, the Hollywood Reds themselves were beset by doubts and disagreements about their disloyalty to America and their treatment by the Communist Party. Creating memorable portraits of Dalton Trumbo, Elia Kazan and John Garfield, the authors also trace the afterlives of those touched by HUAC and the blacklist and show how they continued their argument with America and each other over the next half century. RED STAR OVER HOLLYWOOD is an epic work about one of the most discussed and least understood episodes in our political life. Getting behind the denial and apologetics, the Radoshes tell a story whose long half-life continues. The men and women who agitated for communism a half-century ago created a living legacy used by Jane Fonda and others who revived the Hollywood Left in the 1960s, and by figures such as Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Sean Penn in the equally turbulent filmland politics of today.

S. A. Smith - The Russian Revolution, A Very Short Introduction (2002).jpeg

This concise, accessible introduction provides an analytical narrative of the main events and developments in Soviet Russia between 1917 and 1936. It examines the impact of the revolution on society as a whole--on different classes, ethnic groups, the army, men and women, youth. Its central concern is to understand how one structure of domination was replaced by another. The book registers the primacy of politics, but situates political developments firmly in the context of massive economic, social, and cultural change. Since the fall of Communism there has been much reflection on the significance of the Russian Revolution. The book rejects the currently influential, liberal interpretation of the revolution in favor of one that sees it as rooted in the contradictions of a backward society which sought modernization and enlightenment and ended in political tyranny.

About the Author
Stephen Smith is Professor of History at the University of Essex. He works on the social history of the Russian and Chinese revoltuions and is author of Red Petrograd: Revolution in the Factories, 1917-1918 (Cambridge University Press, 1983), and A Road is Made: Communism in Shanghai, 1920-27 (Curzon Press, 2000).

Communism - Books - Richard Wolin - The Wind from the East, French Int...tural Revolution, and the Legacy of the 1960s 2010.jpg

Michel Foucault, Jean-Paul Sartre, Julia Kristeva, Phillipe Sollers, and Jean-Luc Godard. During the 1960s, a who's who of French thinkers, writers, and artists, spurred by China's Cultural Revolution, were seized with a fascination for Maoism. Combining a merciless exposé of left-wing political folly and cross-cultural misunderstanding with a spirited defense of the 1960s, The Wind from the East tells the colorful story of this legendary period in France. Richard Wolin shows how French students and intellectuals, inspired by their perceptions of the Cultural Revolution, and motivated by utopian hopes, incited grassroots social movements and reinvigorated French civic and cultural life. Wolin's riveting narrative reveals that Maoism's allure among France's best and brightest actually had little to do with a real understanding of Chinese politics. Instead, it paradoxically served as a vehicle for an emancipatory transformation of French society. French student leftists took up the trope of "cultural revolution," applying it to their criticisms of everyday life. Wolin examines how Maoism captured the imaginations of France's leading cultural figures, influencing Sartre's "perfect Maoist moment"; Foucault's conception of power; Sollers's chic, leftist intellectual journal Tel Quel; as well as Kristeva's book on Chinese women--which included a vigorous defense of foot-binding. Recounting the cultural and political odyssey of French students and intellectuals in the 1960s, The Wind from the East illustrates how the Maoist phenomenon unexpectedly sparked a democratic political sea change in France.

Communism - Books - Daniel R. Kempton, Terry D. Clark - Unity or Separ...eriphery Relations in the Former Soviet Union 2001.jpg

Many analysts initially believed that the process of Soviet disintegration would inevitably open a Pandora's box of ethnic nationalism and regional self-determination. But, despite obvious setbacks such as Chechnya, the developments of the last decade have shown that while forces of disintegration remain a very real threat, the fifteen successor states have managed to stay largely intact. One explanation for this somewhat unexpected success is the varied strategies of center-periphery relations adopted by the post-Soviet states, tailored to meet the unique circumstances faced by each former republic of the Soviet Union.

Gary Berkovich - Watching Communism Fail, A Memoir of Life in the Soviet Union (2008).jpg

In this memoir, architect Gary Berkovich describes life growing up Jewish in the Soviet Union, forced relocation to Siberia, and eventual emigration. The book covers World War II and the author's family, as well as the war's effects on a young teenager indoctrinated by Soviet propaganda. He recounts his education and rise as an architect, schooled in the Soviet Constructivist movement, and the concurrent evolution of his Jewish identity. Later chapters describe Siberia, an often homeless existence in 1960s Moscow, anti-Semitism, problems associated with nonconformity in the U.S.S.R., the K.G.B., and the events leading to immigration to the United States. The author's story is recounted alongside the stories of his family members and associates.

Louise Shelley - Policing Soviet Society, The Evol ution of State Control (1996).jpg

Since its creation immediately after the Russian revolution, the militia has had a broad range of social, political and economic functions necessary to direct and control a highly centralized socialist state. However,as the communst party lost its legitimacy the militia was increasingly thrust into the front line of political conflict.A task it was unsuited to perform.Despite the efforts of perestroika to reform it,the collapse of the Soviet state also led to the collapse of morale within the militia. Louise Shelley provides a comprehensive view of the history, development, functions, personnel and operations of the militia from its inception until after the demise of the Soviet state. The militia combined elements of continental, socialist and colonial policing. Its functions and operations changed with the development of the state, yet it always intervened significantly in citizen's lives and citizens were very much involved in their own control.Over time the militia became more removed from politics and moreconcerned with crime control, but it always remained a tool of the party.
This is the first book to analyze the militia, which was one of the most vital elements of control within the Soviet State. It will be a crucial aid to understanding the authoritarianism of the communist system and its legacy for Russia and the successor states.
Louise I.Shelley is Professor at the Department of Justice,Law and Society and the School of International Service at the American University,Washington D.C.

Communism - Books - Mark Edele - Soviet Veterans of World War II, A Po...ement in an Authoritarian Society, 1941-1991 2009.jpg

Millions of Soviet soldiers died in the "war of annihilation" against Nazi Germany but millions more returned to Stalin's state after victory. Mark Edele traces the veterans' story from the early post-war years through to the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. He describes in detail the problems they encountered during demobilization, the dysfunctional bureaucracy they had to deal with once back, and the way their reintegration into civilian life worked in practice in one of the most devastated countries of Europe. He pays particular attention to groups with specific problems such as the disabled, former prisoners of war, women soldiers, and youth.

Communism - Books - Vesselin Dimitrov - Stalins Cold War, Soviet Forei...Democracy and Communism in Bulgaria, 1941- 48 2008.jpg

The book reveals Stalin's efforts to grapple with the dynamic interaction between democratic and communist parties in the domestic politics of European countries in the aftermath of World War II, and his key role in the gradual but inexorable shift towards communist monopoly of power in the countries of Eastern Europe.

Stalin's Cold War presents a highly original analysis of the Soviet leader's role in the gestation of the Cold War. Drawing on rich new evidence from Soviet, East European and British archives, the book offers fresh and illuminating insights into the evolution of Stalin's strategy in the transition from cooperation with the United States and Britain during World War II to ideological and geopolitical confrontation.

Communism - Books - Elena Shulman - Stalinism on the Frontier of Empir...n and State Formation in the Soviet Far East 2008.jpg

This is a fascinating account of frontier Stalinism told through the previously unexplored history of a campaign to attract female settlers to the socialist frontiers of the Soviet Far East in the late 1930s. Elena Shulman reveals the instrumental part these migrants played in the extension of Soviet state power and cultural dominion in the region. Their remarkable stories, recovered from archival letters, party documents, memoirs, press coverage and films, shed new light on Soviet women's roles in state formation, the role of frontier Stalinism in structuring gender ideals, and the nature of Soviet society and Stalinism in the 1930s. Through these narratives Elena Shulman offers a nuanced picture of the world of the frontier as well as the complexities of women's lives under Stalin and the limits of Moscow's rule over the periphery and even the Gulag.

Osprey - Fortress 77 - The Stalin and Molotov Line s, Soviet Western Defences 1926-41 (2008).jpg

This book tells the story of these Soviet defensive systems, their design, construction, and combat history. With excellent illustrations, it describes the standard types of construction and the weapons they contained. The text is a model of clarity, which puts the complicated history into a coherent narrative, and the maps, while not numerous, are effective. The book closes with suggestions for places to visit remains of the Russian defenses. This is one of the best-written books in the series, and is highly recommended even to those unfamiliar with Soviet fortifications.
