Disability is an important issue for the transition countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Not only is a significant portion of their population either in poor health or disabled with implications for labor force participation and productivity but their aging demographics project an increase in the share of disabled people, raising concerns about the sustainability of social protection programs. Thus, if these heavily resource-strapped countries fail to deal in an efficient manner with disability and health issues in their population, they could face serious challenges to their efforts to achieve stronger economic growth and improved living standards. Because the economic drivers and costs of poor health status and disabilities in this region are not well documented, Economic Implications of Chronic Illness and Disability in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union aims to close this gap by leveraging household survey data from a large number of transition countries, analyzing the poverty-disability relationship and the linkages between disability and employment, earnings, children s school enrollments, and adults time-use patterns. Altogether, disability appears to have stronger negative effects on the economic and social well-being of the population in these countries as compared with industrialized countries. The main reasons are the prevalence of a large informal sector, the relatively weak targeting performance of the existing social assistance programs, and the lack of broad-based insurance mechanisms to protect individuals against loss of income due to unexpected illnesses. Addressing these weaknesses is the challenge facing policy makers and the population at large in the region, through the definition and enactment of a deep, well-coordinated, cross-sectoral reform agenda. This book will be useful for policy makers and development officials working to improve living standards in the Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

James Callanan - Covert Action in the Cold War, US Policy, Intelligence and CIA Operation (2009).jpg

Born out of the ashes of World War II, the covert action arm of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was created to counter the challenge posed by the Soviet Union and its allies and bolster American interests worldwide. It evolved rapidly into an eclectic, well-resourced organization whose activities provided a substitute for overt military action and afforded essential backup when the Cold War turned hot in Korea and Vietnam.

Katerina Clark - The Soviet novel, History as ritu al (1981).jpg

In its sure grasp of a huge subject and in its speculative boldness, Professor Clark's study represents a major breakthrough. It sends one back to the original texts with a whole host of new questions.... And it also helps us to understand the place of the 'official' writer in that peculiar mixture of ideology, collective pressure, and inspiration which is the Soviet literary process."

Peter Maguire - Facing Death in Cambodia (2005).jpg

There is little in this account that has not been touched on elsewhere, but since justice has yet to be served on those Khmer Rouge responsible for the deaths of as many as two million Cambodians in the late 1970s, almost any recounting of the story carries its own justification. Maguire spent the past 10 years visiting Cambodia, seeking to understand how the tragedy evolved and why those responsible have not been punished.

30 kwietnia 1975 r. czołgi armii Wietnamu Północnego wjechały do Sajgonu na Południu zajmując pałac prezydencki i przejmując kontrolę nad całym krajem.

Amerykanie opuszczali w pośpiechu Sajgon wsiadając do helikopterów z dachu swojej ambasady.

Największe bitwy XX wieku 30 - Zbigniew Moszumańsk i - Ussuri 1969 (1997).jpg

Walki chińsko-radzieckie trwały do końca kwietnia 1969.

Zwrócono go Chinom 20 lipca 2008, a oficjalne przekazanie 340 km² nastąpiło 14 października 2008

Felix Guattari - New Lines of Alliance, New Spaces of Liberty (2010).jpg

The project: to rescue communism from its own disrepute. Once invoked as the liberation of work through mankind s collective creation, communism has instead stifled humanity. We who see in communism the liberation of both collective and individual possibilities must reverse that regimentation of thought and desire which terminates the individual....
Thus begins the extraordinary collaboration between Félix Guattari and Antonio Negri, written at dawn of the 1980s, in the wake of the crushing of the autonomous movements of the previous decade. Setting out Guattari and Negri diagnose with incisive prescience transformations of the global economy and theorize new forms of alliance and organization: mutant machines of subjectivation and social movement. Prefiguring his collaboration with Michael Hardt, Negri and Guattari enact a singular hybridization of political and philosophical traditions, brining together psychiatry, political analysis, semiotics, aesthetics, and philosophy. Against the workings of an increasingly integrated world capitalism, they raise the banners of singularity, autonomy, and freedom to search out new routes for subversion. This newly expanded edition includes previously untranslated materials and a new introduction by Matteo Mandarini.

Genna Sosonko - Smart Chip From St Petersburg, and other tales from a bygone chess area (2006).jpg

In Smart Chip from St.Petersburg, Genna Sosonko continues his famous chess chronicles. It contains a new series of fascinating and touching portraits of chess players, both famous and forgotten, as well as essays in which Sosonko gives a personal and erudite view on the psychology of the game. Why do old grandmasters -in spite of their experience- play weaker than young ones, what do chess players dream about, what does fame do with a master’s ego, and how do chess and religion interact? Smart Chip from St.Petersburg radiates the author’s love for and devotion to chess, yet is tempered by objectivity and detachment. It will surprise and enchant not only chess players, but all those who recognize the cultural value of chess. Genna Sosonko lived for the first 29 years of his life in Leningrad. He emigrated to Holland in 1972 and became one of the strongest grandmasters in the world.
