In this study, Renate Holub attempts to reclaim Antonio Gramsci's theory from classical Marxism, instead placing him in a broader European critical context, alongside the Frankfurt School, phenomenology, and sociolinguistics. Holub emphasizes Gramsci's affinities with the cultural theories of the Frankfurt School (Horkheimer, Bloch, Brecht, Benjamin), and also points out the links between Gramsci's linguistic and phenomenological forms of knowledge. Holub conveys the conceptual and methodological complexity of his work, which is, the author claims, relevant to the construction of today's critical theory.

Terry Eagleton - Marxism and Literary Criticism (2 002).jpg

Is Marx relevant any more? Why should we care what he wrote? What difference could it make to our reading of literature? Terry Eagleton, one of the foremost critics of our generation, has some answers in this wonderfully clear and readable analysis. Sharp and concise, it is, without doubt, the most important work on literary criticism that has emerged out of the tradition of Marxist philosophy and social theory since the nineteenth century.

Terry Eagleton, Drew Milne - Marxist Literary Theo ry (1996).jpg

This text is designed to give both students and lecturers a sense of the historical formation of a marxist literary tradition. A compilation of principal texts in that tradition, it offers the reader new ways of reading marxism, literature, theory and the social possibilities of writing. The collection is introduced by both editors: Terry Eagleton, writing at the point of what he describes as "the most grievous crisis in marxism's fraught career", surveys the evolution of Marxist criticism, and addresses the profoundly problematic question of Marxism's future, especially as seen in the controversial light of postmodern theory; Drew Milne contributes a key essay on "Reading Marxist Literary Theory", exploring in the process the complex relations between Marx's writings and marxism. Represented in this reader are: Theodor W. Adorno, Louis Althusser, Aijaz Ahmad, Chida Amuta, Etienne Balibar and Pierre Macherey, Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, Ernest Bloch, Bertolt Brecht, Alex Callinicos, Christopher Caudwell, Terry Eagleton, Friedrich Engels, Lucien Goldmann, Fredric Jameson, V.I. Lenin, Georg Lukacs, Karl Marx, The Marxist-Feminist Collective, Jean-Paul Sartre, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Leon Trotsky, V.N. Volsinov, Galvano Della Volpe, Alick West and Raymond Williams.

Tony Bennet - Formalism and Marxism (2003).jpg

Russian Formalism and Marxist criticism had a seismic impact on twentieth-century literary theory and the shockwaves are still felt today. First published in 1979, Tony Bennett's Formalism and Marxism created its own reverberations by offering a ground-breaking new interpretation of the Formalists' achievements and demanding a new way forward in Marxist criticism.
Placing the work of key figures in context and addressing such issues as aesthetics, linguistics and the category of literature, form and function or literary evolution, Bennett argues that the Formalists' concerns provided the basis for a radically historical approach to the study of literature. Addressing such crucial questions as 'What is literature?' or 'How should it be studied and to what end?', Formalism and Marxism explores ideas which should be considered by any student or reader of literature and provides a particular challenge to those interested in Marxist criticism. Now with a new afterword, this classic text still offers the best available starting point for those new to the field, as well as representing a crucial intervention in twentieth-century literary theory.

About the Author
Tony Bennett is Professor of Sociology at the Open University, UK.

Danielle Fosler-Lussier - Music Divided, Bartók’s Legacy in Cold War Culture (2007).jpg

Music Divided explores how political pressures affected musical life on both sides of the iron curtain during the early years of the cold war. In this groundbreaking study, Danielle Fosler-Lussier illuminates the pervasive political anxieties of the day through particular attention to artistic, music-theoretical, and propagandistic responses to the music of Hungary's most renowned twentieth-century composer, Béla Bartók. She shows how a tense period of political transition plagued Bartók's music and imperiled those who took a stand on its aesthetic value in the emerging socialist state. Her fascinating investigation of Bartók's reception outside of Hungary demonstrates that Western composers, too, formulated their ideas about musical style under the influence of ever-escalating cold war tensions.

Douglas W. Blum - National Identity and Globalizat ion, Youth, State, and Society in Post-Soviet Eura sia (2007).jpg

Communism - Books - Douglas W. Blum - National Identity and Globalizat...h, State, and Society in Post-Soviet Eurasia 2007.jpg

Is globalization in danger of diluting national identities and 'transnationalizing' cultures? How can societies attempt to manage globalization and become developed while maintaining a viable national identity? In a study of three globalizing states and cities in post-Soviet Eurasia - Russia (Astrakhan), Kazakhstan (Almaty), and Azerbaijan (Baku) - Douglas W. Blum provides an empirical examination of national identity formation, exploring how cultures, particularly youth cultures, have been affected by global forces. Blum argues that social discourse regarding youth cultural trends - coupled with official and non-official approaches to youth policy - complement patterns of state-society relations and modes of response to globalization. His findings show that the nations studied have embraced certain aspects of modernity and liberalism, while rejecting others, but have also reasserted the place of national traditions.

Yitzhak M. Brudny - Reinventing Russia, Russian Na tionalism and the Soviet State, 1953-1991 (1999).jpg

What caused the emergence of nationalist movements in many post-communist states? What role did communist regimes play in fostering these movements? Why have some been more successful than others? To address these questions, Yitzhak Brudny traces the Russian nationalist movement from its origins within the Russian intellectual elite of the 1950s to its institutionalization in electoral alliances, parliamentary factions, and political movements of the early 1990s.
Brudny argues that the rise of the Russian nationalist movement was a combined result of the reinvention of Russian national identity by a group of intellectuals, and the Communist Party's active support of this reinvention in order to gain greater political legitimacy. The author meticulously reconstructs the development of the Russian nationalist thought from Khrushchev to Yeltsin, as well as the nature of the Communist Party response to Russian nationalist ideas. Through analysis of major Russian literary, political, and historical writings, the recently-published memoirs of the Russian nationalist intellectuals and Communist Party officials, and documents discovered in the Communist Party archives, Brudny sheds new light on social, intellectual, and political origins of Russian nationalism, and emphasizes the importance of ideas in explaining the fate of the Russian nationalist movement during late communist and early post-communist periods.

Communism - Books - The Cambridge History of China - Roderick MacFarqu...ons within the Chinese Revolution, 1966-1982 1991.jpg

Volume 15 of The Cambridge History of China is the second of two volumes dealing with the People's Republic of China since its birth in 1949. The harbingers of the Cultural Revolution were analyzed in Volume 14. Volume 15 traces a course of events still only partially understood by most Chinese. It begins by analyzing the development of Mao's thought since the Communist seizure of power, in an effort to understand why he launched the movement. The contributors grapple with the conflict of evidence between what was said favorably about the Cultural Revolution at the time and the often diametrically opposed retrospective accounts. Volume 15, together with Volume 14, provide the most comprehensive and clearest account of how revolutionary China has developed in response to the upheavals initiated by Mao and Teng Hsiao-p'ing.

Evgenii D. Moniushko - From Leningrad to Hungary, Notes of a Red Army Soldier, 1941-1946 (2005).jpg

This book is a chronological narrative of the experiences of Evgenii Moniushko, who lived through and survived the first year of the siege of Leningrad and who served as a junior officer in the Red Army during the last 18 months of war and the first year of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia and Hungary. As such, it provides an intensely human view of daily army life in both combat and garrison duty and unique perspectives on the conditions he and other soldiers endured while in army service.
