Born in Oklahoma, Shelden earned his Ph.D. in English from Indiana University in 1979. He then began teaching at nearby Indiana State University, where he was promoted to professor of English in 1989, and where he remains a full-time member of the faculty. For ten years he was a fiction critic for the Baltimore Sun, and from 1995 to 2007 he was a features writer for the Daily Telegraph of London, where he contributed dozens of articles on notable figures in film, literature, and music, including one of the last interviews with actor Christopher Reeve. Shelden is married and the father of two daughters.

Shelden’s first book George Orwell: Ten Animal Farm Letters to His Agent, Leonard Moore (1984), was an edited collection drawn from letters Shelden found at the Lilly Library (Indiana University, Bloomington) and was the first to publicize. In 1989, he published his literary history Friends of Promise: Cyril Connolly and the World of Horizon, which covered the decade of the 1940s when Horizon was the most influential literary magazine in the United Kingdom. The book was based on a large collection of Connolly’s personal papers at the University of Tulsa, and on interviews with the magazine’s former editors and assistants, including Stephen Spender.

Authorized by the George Orwell estate, Shelden’s biography of Orwell (Orwell: The Authorized Biography) was published in 1991 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Biography. Among other things, the book included the first detailed account of Orwell’s controversial list of people whom he considered politically dishonest and unreliable in British society.

Shelden’s biography of Graham Greene appeared in a United Kingdom edition in 1994 under the title Graham Greene: The Man Within. In 1995 it was published in the United States, with revisions, as Graham Greene: The Enemy Within. Its “despoiling” portrait of Greene as a driven and devious artist provoked heated debate on both sides of the Atlantic. In the New York Review of Books there was an especially spirited debate between Shelden and novelist David Lodge on the question of Greene’s anti-Semitism, with Shelden arguing that Greene’s published remarks about Jews are “worse than anything in T.S. Eliot or Evelyn Waugh,” and Lodge countering that although Greene drew “on social and cultural prejudices and stereotypes concerning Jews which were common in English society before World War II . . . to label it as anti-Semitic ridicule is crudely reductive.

Trickle Up Poverty, by bestselling author and revered radio host Dr. Michael Savage, is your best defense against the Obamanomics that are dragging the middle class, and everyone else, into a Marxist-Socialist death spiral. The Savage manifesto you hold in your hands shows how Obama is circumventing the Constitution to push through his radical agenda—and, most important, how we can restore our country to the power and prestige that Barack Obama and his corrupt and degenerate "czars" are trying to destroy. Obama's trickle up poverty is infecting all that we hold to be true and self-evident. Here's how:

* Impoverishing the Middle Class
* Defunding the Military and Putting Our Troops in Harm's Way
* Lining the Pockets of His Wall Street Buddies
* Ignoring the Tea Party—The Voice of the People

We are dangerously close to losing the nation we love, but it's not too late. If you buy only one book to learn and react to what Obama the destroyer has done and plans on doing to America, this is it!

About the Author
Dr. Michael Savage is a multimedia icon in the conservative movement. The Telegraph in the U.K. ranked Michael Savage as one of the most influential conservatives in the United States, and with ten million weekly listeners, the Berkeley Ph.D. is the third most listened-to conservative talk-show host. Recently featured in the New Yorker and Playboy, Dr. Savage is author of twenty-five books, including four New York Times bestsellers. His media presence and profile earned him the coveted Freedom of Speech Award from Talkers magazine in 2007.

Dr. Savage holds a master's degree in medical botany and a second in medical anthropology. Additionally, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in epidemiology and nutrition sciences. He is an ardent conservationist, is dedicated to his family, and is a proud patriot of his country.

As usual, the book consists of a series of period photographs taken of the subject matter involved, many of which are in large format, one to a page, and suitably captioned by the authors. Seems a simple idea, but one that is exceptionally well realised.

A quick glance through the pages will lead the casual browser to the conclusion that many of the photographs are not of the best quality, but this would miss the point of why these specific photographs have been included. Many of them were taken by ordinary servicemen using their own equipment, not professional journalists and photographers, at a time when personal cameras were something of a rarity. As such, they represent our best opportunity to see these wrecks in their true aspect, before they were picked clean, sanitised, or otherwise altered to better suit the needs of the press corps following the front line; a point particularly well illustrated by a photograph of a destroyed 2cm Flakvierling mounted onto a Mercedes-Benz 4500A. Some people would no doubt prefer that such photographs have no place in a title of this nature, and whilst they may have a point, if it's the only such photograph of that particular type of vehicle in that state, then I think its inclusion is justified.

The photographs begin with the almost obligatory shot of a burnt out Panther. Any casual browser will have his attention caught by this big cat, and will almost certainly delve further into the contents. This initial attention-getting photograph of the Panther is then followed by a number of pages showing destroyed Panzer IV's, information on which is scant according to the authors, although the US Officer responsible for the photographs seems to be keen on making sure he's included in the photographs. A few wrecked StuG.III's are then followed by another Panzer IV, this one ending up in a muddy bog, almost up to it's cupola. You can't but wonder is this is one of the ones that's since been pulled up and recovered...or is it still at the bottom of a bog in Italy? Anybody know of any Panzer IV's recovered from Italian bogs?

There's a photograph on page 12 of particular interest for me, having an interest in halftracks, consisting of two different vehicles pushed into a ditch alongside a road. At the front there's a late production variant Sd.Kfz.7 with a wooden rear body, whilst behind it there's a Sd.Kfz.10 with a widened rear bed prepared to mount a 2cm FlaK 38, although this is missing. I appears that both vehicles were being used as ordinary load carriers prior to being knocked out, and serves to illustrate just how wrong some modellers are when they insist that such and such a vehicle wasn't built for that purpose and only used for this purpose etc.! On the facing page there's a comprehensively wrecked 250/3 showing an internally mounted 'Kubelmast'...one of those huge telescopic radio masts.

Back to the heavy armour and we're offered various Panzer IV's again...their number in this title perhaps being reflective of the numbers of these vehicles actually produced by Germany during WWII. One of them exhibits a particularly interesting field applied Zimmerit coating, which would look interesting on a model and no doubt draw some attention. Then we're back to halftracks and a 251/C looking almost complete except it's missing it's front wheels and lying on its side. Painted on it's rear doors is the large slogan 'Keep Off - Booby traps!', although since the logo is written vertically, it would appear that it was written before the vehicle was pushed onto its side? The booby traps were less than sensitive then? Or is it that many vehicles were marked thus to deter people from prising off souvenirs?

A wrecked Sd.Kfz.7 2cm Flakvierling with the side panels being constructed of something other than the normal mesh is shown on page 22, and also shows an unusual cut-out to the armour plate covering the front of the engine. Perhaps something for builders of the Dragon kit to consider? There's another one on the facing page, again showing an unusual type of mesh used in its construction, and this time towing an ammunition trailer.

There's a number of more unusual vehicles shown too...and not all them wrecked. An Sd.Kfz.261 being driven by GI's and towing a le.Einheits-Pkw. A pair of wrecked Pz.Sp.Wg AB41 201's, 15cm sIG33 Grille, and a M41 90/53 801 in German colours. Of course there are lots more Panzer IV's too, together with Tiger I's, Hornisse and more Panthers! Towards the centre of the book there are a series of Panzer III photographs taken from an official report, indicated by the labelled and numbered points marked on the photographs...although the origin of the photographs is explained, we're not privy to what the indicated numbers refer to on the first two pages, but the ones taken of the inside of the turret are explained in the captions!

Of course, the strength of these titles lies in the work that the authors have put into correctly identifying the various vehicles and their sub-types, and also which units they've come from and any unusual modifications etc., if they can be seen. Not an easy task seventy years after the events.

Meticulous planning got the Allies to the Normandy beaches, and brute force carried them inland : Panzerwrecks 8 follows the British, American, Canadian and Polish forces in the summer of '44 as they rolled up German held territory, and the photos here are grim reminders of the high cost of doing so. Had the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe of 1940 vintage backed forward positioned German land forces, the Kriegsberichter would have been taking pictures of Allied wrecks.

Kuter pościgowy "Batory", najstarszy zachowany polski okręt i jedyny, który brał udział w kampanii wrześniowej 1939 i przetrwał do dziś, trafił w niedzielę do Muzeum Marynarki Wojennej w Gdyni.

This book, as one of the series of law and society studies, deals with the problem of telecommunications deregulation from a viewpoint of political economy. The author tries to provide a clearer account of the complex public interest issues as to universal service and freedom of speech on the Internet. Distinguishably from the mainstream of recent literature of this kind, the study pays little attention to the structural or technological feature of Internet itself. Instead, the author tries to search for the power relations between actors such as government and corporations. For this purpose, the study aims to use empirical as well as normative instruments. It is also a rich comparative study, based on the empirical observations made by comparing the situations of three countries: the United States, Germany, and Japan.

The book allocates almost half of its total pages to the theoretical problems of political economy. Vincent Mosco’s work on telecommunications policy is widely drawn on. However, despite its subtitle, only two chapters are provided for the empirical and comparative analysis of the tree countries: the situation of universal service (chapter 5) and free speech (chapter 6).

The author maintains that the political economy is a way of exploring the social totality. However, in my impression, the study is too much inclined to government-centered analysis. For example, as to Japan, he stresses that the government has taken a very important role in realising telecommunications deregulation, just as in the post-war economic miracle (p 96). This seems an oversimplification. The initiative of government was indeed important in advancing deregulation in Japan. However, without the maturity of private industrial sectors, deregulation can never achieve a competitive and efficient marketplace that has the capacity to sustain public interests such as universal service and free speech. In Japan, many venture companies such as Yahoo BB are also playing a very important role for promoting wider service areas as well as low-cost provision of Internet. The government, gradually losing the trust of people in these days, seems to be seeking a new role as the coordinator of the society. Deregulation inevitably makes the government abandon its controlling position even partially.

The government oriented character is also clear from the author’s final recommendations to the developing countries: (1) government interventions should be made for securing universal service of the Internet; (2) government must characterise Internet as an open and public communication medium (p 150).

This book inevitably reminds me of Lawrence Lessig’s work: The Future of Ideas (Random House, 2001). In his book, Lessig deals with the same problem of how the public interest is threatened on the Internet. However, Lessig is acute to the technological structure of Internet, which sometimes is deceptive to ordinary people. Under its artificial structure, the public intertes is restricted without giving any warning to the people or even to the government. The study based on political economy perhaps started from the presumption that human actors can always choose to take the right measures to realise any social objectives which they want. This presumption itself seems to be strongly dubious on the Internet.

Despite these criticisms, the book remains an important contribution, which tries to shed light on recent telecommunication problems from the angle of political economy. The empirical analysis of three nations provides useful introductory observations for anyone who would like to research these matters.

In this book we have attempted to outline the history of the art of the Vkings - a people who were considered by their contemporaries to be barbarians. Our history touches but one facet of a rich culture which affected the whole of north-western Europe and, whether the Vikings are interpreted as barbarians or civilizers, the art which they left behind them has an originality and a stature second to none in Europe of the period from 800 - 1100.

Has consumer culture got out of hand? Are the costs of universal access and pollution too great to bear?
This comprehensive, lively and informative book will quickly be recognized as a benchmark in the field. It brings together a huge set of resources for thinking about consumer culture and examining its origins and consequences within a global context.

Adept in handling a complex range of theories, Consumer Society scrupulously uses examples throughout to inform and enhance understanding. Smart writes with verve and feeling and has produced a book that simultaneously covers and enlarges our understanding of consumer culture.

Clear, engaging and original, this book will be important reading for all those interested in our global culture of consumption including students of sociology, social geography and cultural studies.

In this concise book, Weber, a professor at Berkeley, and Jentleson, a professor at Duke, identify "five big ideas" that dominated international politics in the 20th century: peace is better than war; benign hegemony is better than a balance of power; capitalism is better than socialism; democracy is better than dictatorship; and western culture is superior to other cultures. The authors argue that for much of the world a repressive government that achieves economic progress (as is the case in Singapore, for instance) is preferable to a democratic government that fails to improve living standards; this shift, the authors argue, needs to be understood by the American people in order for the U.S. to successfully transition from lone superpower to savvy and influential player. Though their message is far from new, it's extremely well articulated. Yet finding an audience for this book may be a challenge; it's too simplistic for foreign policy wonks and too sophisticated to find a home on Main Street.

During WW2, both sides employed radical makeshift solutions to gain short-term battlefield advantages, and here we present two of the more extreme examples. We'll take you inside a Flammpanzer 38 and give you a nuts and bolts tour of some mSPWs fitted with rocket launchers by the Americans . You'll also tour the main vehicle dump at Meppen, walk along a road littered with Pakwagons, and view the remains of vehicles stranded on flat cars at war's end...

"The New York Times” Wiktor Suworow - właściwie Władimir Bogdanowicz Rezun - to znany rosyjski pisarz i historyk.

Rzym to raczej chciwy potwór. Sprytny acz syty, świetnie zorganizowany, wciąż potrzebujący pieniędzy, by płacić miejskiemu motłochowi za poparcie. A Germanie? To miłujący wolność, zdrowi, przebojowi i cnót wszelkich pełni junacy. Oczywiście są tacy, którzy skojarzą to sobie z historiami sprzed półwiecza o wysokich blondynach... Ale to skojarzenie jest błędne. Myśl autora, acz niewypowiedziana dosłownie biegnie w innym kierunku: Rzymianie to my: bogaci, syci "trawiący czas na biustach kurtyzan", my, dla których "od wojny zawsze lepszy jest pokój". My, którzy mamy syna jedynaka, ale dwa samochody. My, którzyśmy nauczyli się kpić nawet z własnych bogów. Wiecie już, kim są oni?

Ostatni przedwojenny bagnet polski.

Explicitly echoing Afghanistan's tragic recent history, Holt explores the difficulties Alexander the Great encountered when he marched into the country, whose ancient name was Bactria. Like subsequent British, Russian, and, now, American and allied armies, the Macedonian wunderking discovered in 329 B.C.E. that invading was easier than conquering. Not persuaded by Alexander's apologists both ancient and modern, Holt narrates the campaign as an unredeeming exercise in pillage and massacre, with the twist that the Bactrians gave as good as they got: Alexander's armies received more damage invading Bactria than in overthrowing the Persian Empire. Alexander attempted to gain the upper hand through policies alternating scorched-earth campaigns with diplomacy, but the Bactrians would renege, revolt, or retreat to the mountains with frustrating regularity. Sound uncannily familiar? Holt's striking parallels between the warlords Alexander pursued and their modern Afghan avatars result in that rarity of history books: one immediately practical to current-day events. Surely, the journalists, humanitarian workers, and officials rotating into Afghanistan today would profit from Holt's insights.

We looked Eastward. We found some ghostly images of Panzers on a grainy Russian newsreel that we present here more for the overall sense of desolation they convey rather than any particular detail they provide. Heavy armor also reappears in a comprehensive walkaround of a Tiger II and a stroll through some Maus remains at Meppen. Interspersed are as many new photos as we could fit and as much new information as we could find . If you're looking for something interesting, it might just be here in Panzerwrecks 5.
