Louis D. Rubin Jr. is one of the biggest — biggest — names in Southern literature. He taught at Johns Hopkins, Hollins College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he retired as University Distinguished Professor of English.

Less known is Rubin’s role as a highly competent editor of military history. At Algonquin, he supervised the release of some first-rate books, such as Rod Paschall’s The Defeat of Imperial Germany. Now, in The Summer the Archduke Died, Rubin ponders a number of books “On Wars and Warriors,” and as always, his ruminations prove fascinating.Rubin is nothing if not meticulous. Though he belittles his own experience (an enlisted veteran of “The Good War,” he was never shipped overseas), he shows considerable courage and is not above calling even the great John Keegan to task when the great British war historian occasionally nods.

Rubin covers a great deal of ground, but his focus lies on World War I — a war, he argued, that never got the attention it deserved. Although it produced great literature from Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms to Robert Graves Goodbye to All That to the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, the historians have generally shied away. The slaughter is horrid to contemplate. (One memorial at St. Cyr, the French equivalent of West Point, simply notes “The Class of 1914″ — apparently, there were not enough survivors to note.) It was also a war of stagnation, as increased firepower forced the armies into trenches. There was none of the derring-do of a Rommel or a Patton, of paratroop landings or daring maneuver.

Rubin, however, argues that World War II, in effect was simply the First World War resumed after a time-out. He argues that the generals were not the doddering old butchers they’re often stereotyped as being (although it is hard, extremely hard, to acquit someone as cold-blooded as Douglas Haig entirely). In fact, the great innovations of World War II — the evolution of the tank, the dominating role of air power — had their start in the trenches late in the First War, as generals tried anything, anything to break the stalemate. Had the conflict of 1914-18 dragged on another year — and it very nearly did — some of these might have flowered sooner.

Reviewing contemporary texts, Rubin deftly catches the challenge and frustration of trying to catch the fog of war in a bottle — of seeing things both from the perspective of a grunt on a line and a general well in the rear. (The First War removed the great commanders from the front lines, but did not give them the tools for command control, such as radio, that would serve the World War II commanders well.)

All History - Robert B. Bruce, Iain Dickie, Kevin Kiley, Michael F... 1792-1815 Equipment, Combat Skills, and Tactics 2008.jpg

I've read, over the years, a few books on Napoleon and the wars he fought. In many ways, this book is an essential primer, or at least a very useful tool for the reader who's not an expert on Napoleon, but who nonetheless wishes to know something about warfare during the era, at a nuts-and-bolts level. The book is divided into five chapters, covering infantry; cavalry; command and control; artillery, engineers and sieges; and naval warfare. Each of these chapters is lavishly illustrated with pictures, both color plates and black and white drawings. Each chapter includes a discussion of several battles, which illustrate what the text is saying. For instance, the chapter on artillery tactics includes several pages on the Battle of Friedland, where the French artillery literally blasted a hole in the middle of the Russian front. Each of these accounts of a battle is accompanied by a two-page 3D map of the battlefield showing the maneuvers of the units involved. .....

All History - Michael F. Pavkovic, Christer Jorgensen, Rob S. Rice ...- AD 1763 Equipment, Combat Skills, and Tactics 2006.jpg

When gunpowder replaced steel as the weapon of choice, soldiers had to adapt or die. In Fighting Techniques of the Early Modern World, five military experts explore the tactics and strategy required to win battles with the technology available, and describe how the development of new weapons changed the face of warfare. Using specially-commissioned color and black and white artworks to illustrate the battles, equipment and tactics of the era, Fighting Techniques of the Early Modern World shows in detail the methods by which armies gained and lost ascendency on the battlefield.

Willie Thompson - What Happened to History (2000).jpg

This original study explores the development of the postmodern turn in history, brought on by the social, political and cultural changes of the 1970s and 1980s. Challenging notions of certainty and objectivity, postmodernism has questioned traditional models and methods in studying history. A timely intervention in an increasingly contentious area, this book evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of postmodern history. Beginning with a brief account of historiography as an academic discipline, with its origins in the 'scientific historiography' of the nineteenth century, Willie Thompson charts the growth and development of the historical method in the twentieth century. He examines the impact of Marxist historiography, particularly in Britain and the United States, and the emergence of new approaches to history exemplified by the work of E.P. Thompson and others. In addition, Thompson assesses the impact of feminist, black and minority history.

This is the first text to combine both paleontology and paleobiology. Traditional textbooks treat these separately, despite the recent trend to combine them in teaching. It bridges the gap between purely theoretical paleobiology and purely descriptive invertebrate paleontology books. The text is targeted at undergraduate geology and biology majors, with the emphasis on organisms, rather than dead objects to be described and catalogued. Current ideas from modern biology, ecology, population genetics, and many other concepts will be applied to the study of the fossil record.

Medieval marriage has been widely discussed, and this book gives a brief and accessible overview of an important subject. It covers the entire medieval period, and engages with a wide range of primary sources, both legal and literary. It draws particular attention to local English legislation and practice, and offers some new readings of medieval English literary texts, including Beowulf, the works of Chaucer, Langland's Piers Plowman, the Book of Margery Kempe and the Paston Letters. Focusing on a number of key themes important across the period, individual chapters discuss the themes of consent, property, alliance, love, sex, family, divorce and widowhood.

She asks: What did ordinary people understand by guilt, suspicion, evidence and the term "offense"? She illuminates the values and beliefs of the emerging colonial consciousness and the complexity of power relations in the colony. The book reconstructs the legal process with great tetail and richness and is able to evoke the everyday lives of people in the colonial NSW.

This compelling biography of Arthur Weigall, the British Egyptologist and Chief Inspector of Antiquities, chronicles his involvement with the discovery of Tutankhamuns tomb under Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. Weigall came into conflict with Carter and Carnarvon over newspaper reports of the famous find. His remarks to the press during that time led to the infamous story of the Curse of the Pharaohs. This biography brings to life the atmosphere, intrigue, and intense competition in Egypt during the first quarter of the 20th century.

Victor Katz, Robin Wilson - Sherlock Holmes in Bab ylon and Other Tales of Mathematical History (2004 ).jpg

This book is a collection of 44 articles on the history of mathematics, published in MAA journals over the past 100 years. Covering a span of almost 4000 years, from the ancient Babylonians to the eighteenth century, it chronicles the enormous changes in mathematical thinking over this time, as viewed by distinguished historians of mathematics from the past (Florian Cajori, Max Dehn, David Eugene Smith, Julian Lowell Coolidge and Carl Boyer) and the present.

Each of the four sections of the book (Ancient Mathematics, Medieval and Renaissance Mathematics, The Seventeenth Century, The Eighteenth Century) is preceded by a Foreword, in which the articles are put into historical context, and followed by an Afterword, in which they are reviewed in the light of current historical scholarship. In more than one case, two articles on the same topic are included, to show how knowledge and vies about the topic changed over the years.

This book will be enjoyed by anyone interested in mathematics and its history – and in particular by mathematics teachers at secondary, college, and university level.

Barry Cunliffe - The Ancient Celts (2000).jpg

The archetypal 'barbarians from the north', the Celts were feared for their ferocity in battle and admired as skilled craftsmen. For two and half thousand years the Celts have continued to fascinate all who have come into contact with them. "The Ancient Celts" presents an absorbing account of the tribes whose origins and identity still provoke heated debate. Exploring the archaeological reality of the Iron Age inhabitants of barbarian Europe, Professor Cunliffe traces the emergence of chiefdoms, patterns of expansion and migration, and the development of Celtic ethnicity and identity.
Each generation, the British scholar Jacquetta Hawkes has observed, chooses the archaeology that best suits its current ideology. For a century beginning in the late 1800s, archaeologists depicted the Celts as an inordinately brave and poetic tribal people who battled their way across the Eurasian world without being unduly aggressive--in the manner, that is, of good colonialists. Today some archaeologists are more inclined to consider the Celts as a people who kept ethnic unity alive across a huge span of territory and time, a view that may offer comfort in a time when, as Oxford University professor Barry Cunliffe writes, "ethnic divisions are becoming a painful and disturbing reality." Cunliffe himself takes the view that the Celts were at once alike and diverse, which led to the formation of many different Celtic cultures from the Black Sea to Ireland. This heavily illustrated, well-written book tells their story well, from the beginnings of Celtic culture in the distant Indo-European past to the height of Celtic power in the third century A.D.

Ernest Gellner - Muslim Society (1981).jpg

Of all the great world religions, Islam appears to have the most powerful political appeal in the twentieth century. It sustains some severely traditional and conservative regimes, but it is also capable of generating intense revolutionary ardour and of blending with extreme social radicalism. As an agent of political mobilisation, it seems to be overtaking Marxism, arid surpassing all other religions. The present book seeks the roots of this situation in the past. The traditional Muslim society of the arid zone has, in the past, displayed remarkable stability and homogeneity, despite great political fragmentation, and the absence of a centralised religious hierarchy. The book explores the mechanisms which have contributed to this result - a civilisation in which (in the main) weak states co-existed with a strong culture, which had a powerful hold over the populations under its sway.

Winston Churchill was not only a statesman and leader of historic proportions, he also possessed substantial literary talents. These two factors combine to make The Gathering Storm a unique work. The first volume of Churchill's memoirs, this selection is broken into two parts. The first, "From War to War," consists of Churchill's critical observations on the settlement of World War I and its place in the causes of the Second World War. The second volume contains letters and memoranda from the British government--of which Churchill was part--as the country plunged unprepared into war. This stands as the best of history: written as it was made, by the man who made it.

All History - Christopher Duffy - Siege Warfare Vol. 2 The Fortress... Age of Vauban and Frederick the Great 1660-1789 1985.jpg

Christopher Duffy read history at Balliol College, Oxford and joined the staff of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1961, becoming Senior Lecturer in the Department of War Studies and International Affairs. He was Secretary-General of the British Commission for Military History, a Vice-President of the Military History Society of Ireland, and a member of the Fortress Study Group. After many years at Sandhurst he went on to become Research Professor in War in History at the Institute for the Study of War and Society at De Montfort University before he retired from academic life, but fortunately not writing. He wrote two very popular books for the Napoleonic period on the battles of Austerlitz and Borodino. Studies at Sandhurst were developed into excellent books like Red Storm over the Reich for the World War Two period. His interest in fortifications led to a general survey, Fire & Stone, the Science of Fortress Warfare 1660-1860, as well as two more detailed books, Siege Warfare, The Fortress in the Early Modern World 1494-1660, and The Fortress in the Age of Vauban and Frederick the Great, 1660-1789. It is our hope that one day he have time to do another detailed study in fortress warfare to complete the trilogy.

While this would be an impressive collection of work, Christopher Duffy's preferred field has always been Eighteenth Century Warfare. He began with a life of Field Marshal Browne, called Wild Goose and Eagle, and went on to cover the armies of Frederick the Great and Maria Theresa. Russia got its turn with Russia's Military Way to the West: Origins and Nature of Russian Military Power 1700-1800, while the actual campaigns of Frederick were surveyed in Frederick the Great: A Military Life.

Christopher Duffy's first book for us was to go back and re-examine the Prussian Army in The Army of Fredrick the Great, 2nd Edition. The Emperor's Press had been attracted to his work by his ability to handle very detailed subjects while never losing sight of the bigger picture, all in a most readable style. He had to teach us a great deal of how to study history, especially the 18th Century.

However is next book for us was a continuation of his Russian work, Eagles over the Alps, Suvorov in Italy and Switzerland 1799. The staff here enjoyed immensely following Suvorov's trek over Alpine Passes on large scale maps, but on visiting the Panixer Pass found it much more daunting to do it over the actual ground. Christopher Duffy then went on to update his work on the army of Maria Theresa in Instrument of War, Volume 1 of The Austrian Army in the Seven Years War, a project we did jointly with the Austrian Army Museum (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) in Vienna. Our rewards for this was a book we had always wanted to do, a more detailed look (but still very readable) at one history's greatest campaigns. The result was Prussia's Glory: Rossbach and Leuthen 1757, of which we are immensely proud. Another recent book by Christopher Duffy, sadly by another publisher, was 1745, a fresh look at the Jacobite campaign of 1745-1746.

Brian R. Price - Techniques of Medieval Armour Rep roduction; The 14th Century (2000).jpg

Few historical icons can match the evocative power of the medieval suit of armour, and this epic new book is a complete course in the tools and techniques of the modern armourer’s art. Through more than 1,000 detailed photos and clear instruction, Brian Price presents a working handbook for aspiring and active armourers who want to develop their skills in the production of medieval armour in the style of the 14th century. The book is divided into four sections: a sweeping history of armour and its production from its medieval roots to its modern revival; a practical introduction to all the tools and supplies necessary to equip a modern workshop; a thorough review of key techniques; and a series of actual courses in constructing armoured defenses for the head, body, arm, hand and leg. Taking the reader through the construction of an authentic medieval harness from conception to completion, Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction is a vital addition to the libraries of serious craftsmen, historians, collectors and researchers.
