Napoleon's wars were only a preliminary step in his larger plan to establish a rational state which would increase the pace of society's modernization. Napoleon's Integration of Europe studies the implications of this project for the relationship between France and the rest of Europe. Through a systematic comparison of the experiences of French domination in the majority of European states, Stuart Woolf examines the problems encountered by French bureaucrats in ruling a progressively expanding empire, and explores, through the eyes of the populations subjected to French rule, the nature of collaboration and resistance.
Napoleon's Integration of Europe not only chronicles the history of France, but also the histories of Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Poland, and Spain, at a crucial moment in the development of each. The first comparative study of Europe in the Napoleonic era, it provides an in-depth look at an early exercise in imperialism--in fact, the first attempt to create a single Europe.

Ross Anderson - The Battle of Tanga 1914 (2002).jpg

On 2 November 1914, obscured by the greater events in Europe, a British convoy of a light cruiser and twelve merchantmen was lying off the German East African port of Tanga, preparatory to the landing of two brigades of the Indian army. It started the main phase of the East African campaign which lasted until after the Armistice in November 1918. The battle of Tanga was the bloody beginning of a long and bitterly fought campaign in tropical Africa conceived as part of a wider plan to conquer Germany's East African empire and ensure British maritime superiority in the Indian Ocean. The ensuing battle proved to be a fiasco for the British, and highlighted the lack of co-ordination between Britain's wartime ministries and the unreadiness of the Indian Army.

Theodore L. Sylvester - Slavery Throughout History Reference Library, Almanac (1999).jpg

Two of a proposed three-volume set (a primary sources volume will appear later), the Almanac and Biographies share almost identical time-line and "words to know" sections. Both volumes attempt to cover the subject worldwide, from ancient times to the present, yet both suffer from generalizations, poor editing, and careless scholarship.Biography has a more specific focus; it presents "30 men and women who made an impact . . . on slavery or who were profoundly affected by it." Alphabetically arranged from Afonso I of Kongo to Denmark Vesey, it is an attractive work whose text is sprinkled with black-and-white photos and sidebars. "Further reading" at the end of each entry includes books, periodicals, and Web sites. Controversial issues, such as Sally Hemings' relationship to Thomas Jefferson, are fairly presented, and descriptions of sex in slavery, such as Haksun Kim's experience as a Japanese "comfort woman," are appropriate for sixth grade and older. However, limiting coverage to these 30 individuals is problematic.

George E. Lane - Early Mongol Rule in Thirteenth-C entury Iran, A Persian Renaissance (2003).jpg

An account of the re-emergence of Persia as a world player and the reassertion of its cultural, political and spiritual links with Turan, this book opposes the way in which, for too long, the whole period of Mongol domination of Iran has been viewed from a negative standpoint. Though arguably the initial irruption of the Mongols brought little comfort to those in its path, this is not the case with the second 'invasion' of the Chinggisids. This study demonstrates that Khan came as a welcomed king rather than as a conqueror. It paints a picture of the early Il-Khanate as a cultural and spiritual renaissance and reveals both and his son Abaqa as fathers of that legacy.

Robert Hoyland - Arabia and the Arabs, From the Br onze Age to the Coming of Islam (2001).jpg

Knowledge of pre-Islam Arabia is essential for anyone seeking to understand how Islam arose and the shape it took. Further, knowledge of the cultures, commerce, and conflicts of the Mediterranean from the Bronze Age to Muhammed is fatally incomplete without the inclusion of the Arabs and the vital role they played. Arabia and the Arabs provides the only up-to-date, one volume survey of the region and its peoples during this period.
Using a wide range of sources--inscriptions, poetry, histories, and archaeological evidence--Robert Hoyland explores the main cultural areas of Arabia, from ancient Sheba in the south, to the desert oases of the north. He meticulously traces the major themes in the:
*economy
*society
*religion
*art and architecture
*language and literature
*Arabhood and Arabisation.
The text is supplemented by over 50 photographs, drawings, and maps.

Julie Marshall - Britain and Tibet 1765-1947, A se lect annotated bibliography of British relations w ith Tibet and the Himalayan States including Nepal , Sikkim and Bhutan (2005).jpg

All History - Julie Marshall - Britain and Tibet 1765-1947, A selec...layan States including Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan 2005.jpg

This bibliography is a record of British relations with Tibet in the period 1765 to 1947. As such it also involves British relations with Russia and China, and with the Himalayan states of Ladakh, Lahul and Spiti, Kumaon and Garhwal, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Assam, in so far as British policy towards these states was affected by her desire to establish relations with Tibet. It also covers a subject of some importance in contemporary diplomacy. It was the legacy of unresolved problems concerning Tibet and its borders, bequeathed to India by Britain in 1947, which led to border disputes and ultimately to war between India and China in 1962. These borders are still in dispute today. It also provides background information to Tibet's claims to independence, an issue of current importance. The work is divided into a number of sections and subsections, based on chronology, geography and events. The introductions to each of the sections provide a condensed and informative history of the period and placethe books and article in their historical context. Most entries are also annotated. This work is therefore both a history and a bibliography of the subject, and provides a rapid entry into a complex area for scholars in the fields of international relations and military history as well as Asian history.

Hilda Ellis Davidson - The Lost Beliefs of Northe rn Europe (1991).jpg

Fragments of ancient belief have been incorporated into folklore and Christian dogma with the result that its original tenets have merged with the myths and psychologies of the intervening years. Hilda Ellis Davidson sifts through centuries of cultural and religious influences to locate evidence of these "lost" pagan beliefs. Davidson illustrates how northern pagan religions have been represented and misinterpreted by the Christian tradition and throws light on the nature of such beliefs and how they have been preserved. The Lost Beliefs of Northern Europe stresses both the possibilities and the difficulties of investigating pre-Christian faiths and emphasizes the need to separate speculation from scientific proof. This book will be a useful tool for students with a serious interest in archaeology as it illustrates with examples how objectivity is not necessarily the driving force in forming our supposedly scientific view of the past. It will also appeal to the general reader who wants to understand the true nature of Northern European pagan belief as opposed to the oversimplified view popularized by the media. The Lost Beliefs of Northern Europe argues for intellectual rigorousness rather than romanticization of the past, and challenges the reader to rethink accepted interpretations.

L.C.B. Seaman - From Vienna to Versailles (1990).jpg

No period of European history is as widely studied as that from the Vienna settlement to the Treaty of Versailles. Yet few periods are so widely misunderstood. Provocatively reinterpreting the events from 1815 to 1920 in Europe, From Vienna to Versailles dispels the myths that obscure much nineteenth-century history. Seaman reexamines the notion that middle class-discontent fomented the 1848 revolutions, that Napolean III `overthrew' the Second Republic, and that a condition of international anarchy existed in the decade before 1914, among others. Emphatic and challenging, From Vienna to Versailles interprets events rather than simply enumerating them, inspiring its readers to have opinions about history, to take sides and debate, to take part in history's writing.

Lars-Eric Hoglund - Uniforms of The Swedish Army i n the Great Northern War (1996).jpg

Forward, Or Why One Would Write Such A Book
The increase in serious interest in the era of Charles XII in the last few years is due in large part to the books of Peter Englund and Alf Åberg. On the other hand, for those who wish to study the uniforms of the period in greater depth, the offerings are somewhat limited. The recommended works in Swedish are first and foremost Bellander's, "Dräkt och uniform", Åberg and Göransson's, "Karoliner, and Gripenberg's, "Finsk Krigsmannabeklädnad. However, these only deal with the Swedish and Finnish indelta regiments, as well as the Livgardet and Artillery. The värvade units in the German provinces are described in two excellent volumes by Georg Tessin, "Die Deutschen Regimenter der Krone Schweden; however, all of the his uniform information is not correct. In the last couple of years a number of English and American booklets on the Swedish Army in the Great Northern War have appeared. Unfortunately, they all have the same things in common. They are carelessly produced and full of errors. Finally, uniform information is lacking on the garrison units in Sweden and the Baltic, as well as information on all of the temporary and värvade regiments raised during the war, except perhaps for a footnote in some regimental history. A large part of earlier published information now appears to be unsupported by the facts which one finds in the General Muster Rolls for the specific units. For the benefit of those who are interested in uniforms, in particular those brave souls who paint military miniatures, I have been encouraged to publish my notes. This I do with a certain hesitation. Seen from the economic and technocratic perspective of our stress filled age with its blind demand for effectiveness and profitability, such a book as this is in all honesty unjustified. On the other hand, it has been extremely satisfying to have written it. One thing or another in the book is in direct opposition to earlier published information and traditional views. I take this risk. People who do such research are not to be trifled with. Nevertheless, as far as I have be able to interpret the muster rolls, accounts, reports, orders and other documents, my uniform information is reliable. In questionable cases, it is at least highly probable. I hope readers profit from what I have produced. I would also like to thank Sören Henriksen of Roskilde in Denmark and Marc Grieves who has done the beautiful illustrations, together with Leif Törnquist , Anders Thornström of the Krigsarkivet and Jean Claesson who have contributed some valuable uniform information, and last, but not the least; my warmest thanks to Dan Schorr of Harrison, Maine, who have done a superb and very fluent translation of my book into English!

Brinley Thomas - The Industrial Revolution and the Atlantic Economy, Selected Essays (1993).jpg

In recent years, the idea that Britain experienced an industrial revolution has been widely questioned. The new economic history, with its emphasis on quantitative techniques and macro-economic indices, has tended to regard Britain's transformation as a gradual and modest affair which does not deserve the term "revolution." The Industrial Revolution and the Atlantic Economy takes issue with this revisionism. Brinley Thomas argues that a change in technology enabled Britain to overcome the energy crisis and to sustain dramatic population growth at an increasing standard of living. This epoch- making change in the energy base was brought about by substituting fossil fuels for organic materials, thereby ushering in the modern age of coal, iron and petroleum.

David Turley - The Culture of English Anti-Slavery , 1780-1860 (1991).jpg

The Culture of English Antislavery addresses the recent lively international debate about the relation of antislavery in Britain to the deep changes of the period of the Industrial Revolution. It offers an account of the overall shape of organized antislavery from its beginnings in the 1780s, and provides fresh perspectives from which to assess opposing interpretations of antislavery. The evolution of antislavery is portrayed as a series of changing alliances of different and sometimes conflicting religious traditions. The successive alliances of abolitionists are analyzed through the concept of a culture of reform embracing ideology, organizational and propaganda forms, and the more intimate connections and rituals which reformers used to reinforce their identity and solidarity. The result is a definition of the middle class "reform mentality" which linked the antislavery work of reformers to social improvement and to campaigns for transatlantic reform.David Turley's argument is supported in short narratives about reform in different communities at different times. In his conclusion, he relates the various elements of the antislavery coalitions to early Chartism and the popular radicalism of the 1790s.
