The late sixteenth century saw a redrawing of the borders of north-west Europe. Wales and Brittany entered into unions with neighboring countries England and France. Nice uses Brittany and Wales' responses to unification to write a comparative history of national identity during the early modern period. The Estates of Brittany and the Council in the Marches of Wales sponsored works of sacred historiography which manipulated history to defend their jurisdictions and legitimize their legal claims over the land. Nice argues that the sacred histories of each country fostered contrasting national identities, one differentialist and the other assimilationist. This distinction, which uses terms characteristic of twentieth-century nationalism, demonstrates that the original function of national identities must be considered in order to appreciate their historical specificity and mutability.

Ranald C. Michie - Guilty Money, The City of Londo n in Victorian and Edwardian Culture, 1815-1914 (2 009).jpg

This is an engaging socio-cultural study of the place occupied by the City of London within British cultural life during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Michie interrogates the dialectic nature of two traditional views of the City as a global financial centre: London as a theatre of corruption, fraud and scandal; and as a place of unbridled success and power for the ambitious elite. Rather than rely on the opinion of orthodox figures contemporaneous to the period under examination, Michie recognises the novel as a pertinent source of socio-economic representation. By comparing both literary and popular novels at different times, this work illustrates how the evidence for cultural shifts can rest upon the generality of the population. Marrying literary and economic analysis, Guilty Money foregrounds the limitless possibilities of the novel as a work of historical documentation.

Rita Costa Gomes - The Making of a Court Society, Kings and Nobles in Late Medieval Portugal (2003).jpg

This full-length study of the Portuguese court in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries shows how women and men, noblemen and clergy, artisans and minor servants at the court lived in close proximity and were connected to each other. It describes the constant displacement of this complex community within the geographical space of Portugal, and how everyday life at court was shaped by ceremonial duties and common activities.

Andrea Zorzi - Florentine Tuscany, Structures and Practices of Power (2000).jpg

This volume gathers together seventeen original essays that represent the new directions being taken by historians of the Florentine Renaissance. Florence has often been studied in the past for its distinctive urban culture and society, while insufficient attention has been paid to the important Tuscan territorial state that was created by Florence in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These essays offer new and exemplary approaches toward state-building, political vocabulary, political economy, civic humanism, local history and social patronage.

All History - Clifford R. Backman - The Decline and Fall of Medieva...conomy in the Reign of Frederick III, 1296-1337 1995.jpg

This is the first detailed study of Sicilian life in the reign of Frederick III (1296-1337), a period that marked Sicily's transition from a bustling and prosperous Mediterranean emporium to a poor backwater torn apart by violence. This book, by focusing on Frederick III's crucial reign, argues that there were many more things "wrong" with Sicilian life than just the shape of its overseas trade relations. Placing itself between those who blame the foreigners and those who blame the Sicilians themselves, it shows that an entire nexus of factors and influences were at work in unravellingSicilian life. It also demonstrates that these forces can be seen best in the forty years that followed Sicily's liberation from foreign control in the bloody war of the "Sicilian Vespers."

David Harvey - Celtic Geographies, Landscapes, Cul ture and Identity (2001).jpg

This lively study illuminates the dynamic nature of Celticity and Celtic geography by exploring the many ways in which an old culture is being re-interpreted to serve the needs of particular groups of people in modern times. This work critically questions traditional conceptualization of Celticity that relies on a homogenous interpretation of what it means to be a Celt in contemporary society.

W. Schwarz - The Expansion of England, Essays on R ace, Ethnicity and Cultural History (1996).jpg

Confronting the contemporary poststructuralist debate from the perspective of cultural historiography, The Expansion of England presents an historical study of race and ethnicity. Specifically, it provides an account, both theoretical and applied, of the combination of sexual, racial and ethnic identities, underpinning and shaping the experiences of English men and women in the nineteenth century. Although very accessible, this book will be received seriously by both theorists and historians.

Sean Mcconville - Irish Political Prisoners 1848-1 922 (2002).jpg

This is the most wide-ranging study ever published of political violence and the punishment of Irish political offenders from 1848 to the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922. Those who chose violence to advance their Irish nationalist beliefs ranged from gentlemen revolutionaries to those who openly embraced terrorism or even full-scale guerilla war. Se¡n McConville provides a comprehensive survey of Irish revolutionary struggle, matching chapters on punishment of offenders with descriptions and analysis of their campaigns. Government's response to political violence was determined by a number of factors, including not only the nature of the offences but also interest and support from the United States and Australia, as well as current objectives of Irish policy.

This book considers the ways in which modernity was constructed, in all its incompleteness, through colonialism. Using a variety of archival resources and equally diverse methodologies, the authors trace modernity's unstable foundations in the slippages and ruptures of colonial gender and sexual politics.

Martin Kitchen - A History Of Modern Germany 1800- 2000 (2006).jpg

This book fills an important gap by providing a broad survey of modern German history from 1800-2000, thus setting GermanyA’s fragmented history within its full context. Organised chronologically, the book deals with all the major watersheds in German history, including the unification, the rise and fall of the German Empire, the emergence of the Weimar Republic, and its submergence by the Third Reich, the collapse of the Third Reich with the Second World War, the birth of the Federal Republic, the collapse of Communism and re-unification. Written from the perspective of post-reunification Germany, the book allows readers to take a long view of German history and so to trace continuities as well as changes. Kitchen addresses cultural matters such as class, religion and gender, as well as political and economic history. He also pays attention to regional history, rather than focusing on the dominant role of Prussia.
This book covers not only the experience of one of the major nations of the modern world a?’ but also its defining role in the wider history of Europe and the world.

Andrea M Berlin - The First Jewish Revolt, Archaeo logy, History and Ideology (2002).jpg

The First Jewish Revolt against Rome is arguably the most decisive event in the history of Judaism and Christianity. The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE by the Roman General Titus forced a transformation in structure and form for both of these fraternal religions. Yet despite its importance, little has been written on the First Revolt, its causes, implications and the facts surrounding it, In this volume, Andrea M. Berlin and J. Andrew Overman have gathered the foremost scholars on the period to discuss and debate this pivotal historical event. The contributions explore both Roman and Jewish perspectives on the Revolt, looking at its history and archaeology, and finally examining the ideology and interpretation of the revolt in subsequent history and myth.

C. W. R. Long - British Pro-Consuls in Egypt, 1914 -1929, The Challenge of Nationalism (2004).jpg

With World War I and Egypt's colorful politics as background, C.W.R. Long tells the story of four proconsuls (McMahon, Wingate, Allenby and Lloyd), their principal opponent, Sa'ad Zaghul, and the great events of the time - the rise of the WAFD party, the uprising of 1919, the murder of Sir Lee Stack and the Allenby ultimatum. He sheds new light on the strife of members of the High Commission among themselves and the Foreign Office, on the struggle between Egypt and Britain for ownership of the Sudan, on Egypt's fight for independence and on the failure of democracy to take root in the country.

All History - Michael D. Glascock - Archaelogical Chemistry, Analyt...cal Techniques and Archaeological Interpretation 2007.jpg

Archaeologists, historians, chemists, and physicists have employed a variety of chemical and physical approaches to study artifacts and historical objects since at least the late 18th century. During the past 50 years, the chemistry of archaeological materials has increasingly been used to address a broad spectrum of anthropological topics, including preservation, dating, nativity, exchange, provenance, and manufacturing technology. This book brings together 28 papers that address how various analytical techniques can be used to address specific archaeological questions. Chemists, archaeologists, geologists, graduate students, and others in related disciplines who are investigating the use of archaeometric techniques will find this book of interest.

Wu Xiao An - Chinese Business in the Making of a M alay State, 1882-1941, Kedah and Penang (2003).jpg

This book examines how Chinese family and business networks, focused around activities such as revenue farming, including opium, the rice trade, and pawnbroking, and related legal and labour organization activities, were highly influential in the process of state formation in Malaya. It shows how Chinese family and business networks were flexible and dynamic, and were closely interlocked with economic and social structures, around which government, and states, developed. It considers the crucial role of wealth and power in the process of state formation, and challenges accepted views of Chinese ethnicity and migration.
