During the Civil War, humans impacted plants and animals on an unprecedented scale as soldiers on both sides waged the most environmentally destructive war ever on American soil. Refugees and armies alike tramped across the landscape foraging for food, shelter, and fuel. Wild plants and animals formed barriers for armies and carried disease, yet also provided medicine and raw materials necessary to implement war, greatly influencing the day-to-day life of soldiers and civilians. Of the thousands of books written about the Civil War, few mention the environment, and none address the topic as a principal theme. In Flora and Fauna of the Civil War, Kelby Ouchley blends traditional and natural history to create a unique text that explores both the impact of the Civil War on the surrounding environment and the reciprocal influence of plants and animals on the war effort. The war generated an abundance of letters, diaries, and journals in which soldiers and civilians penned descriptions of plants and animals, sometimes as a brief comment in passing and other times as part of a noteworthy event in their lives. Ouchley collects and organizes these first-person accounts of the Civil War environment, adding expert analysis and commentary in order to offer an array of fascinating insights on the natural history of the era. After discussing the physical setting of the war and exploring humans' attitudes toward nature during the Civil War period, Ouchley presents the flora and fauna by individual species or closely related group in the words of the participants themselves. From ash trees to willows, from alligators to white-tailed deer, the excerpts provide glimpses of personal encounters with the natural world during the war, revealing how soldiers and civilians thought about and interacted with wild flora and fauna in a time of epic historical events. Collectively, no better sources exist to reveal human attitudes toward the environment in the Civil War era. This one-of-a-kind reference book will spark widespread interest among Civil War scholars, writers, and enthusiasts, as well as environmental historians.

This effort from the author of The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides is a joy on several levels. Conroy might not be the first to disguise a memoir as a collection of foodstuffs, but it's hard to imagine a more entertaining, honest and outlandish effort. In 21 chapters and 100 recipes, he traces his masticating, lusting, family-crazed, traveling life from a dysfunctional childhood in the South (with a tyrannical father and a mother who thought of cooking as "slave labor"), to gourmet adventures in Rome, Paris and the table of Alain Ducasse. The book aches with tales of times when eating is at its most urgent: in the face of love, or death, after an all-nighter with the guys or in the company of other great eaters. It's hard not to admire Conroy's innate ability to spin a yarn. And the food's not bad, either. From Conroy's days in the Carolina Low Country there are Crab Cakes and Peach Pie. In Italy, it's Ribollita and Saltimbocca alla Romana. A chapter entitled "Why Dying Down South Is More Fun" suggests proper fare for mourning, such as Pickled Shrimp and Grits Casserole. As Robert Frost might have pointed out, writing prose in a cookbook is like playing tennis without a net. Conroy is free to scatter his memories like buckshot with no real worries of chapter endings, plot lines and character development. In his hands, the technique propels both writer and reader into a state of fullness.

Sheehan paints air force Gen. Bernard Schriever and his colorful band of military aides, civilian patrons, defense intellectuals and aerospace entrepreneurs as a guerrilla insurgency fighting Pentagon red tape, and a hostile air force brass, led by Strategic Air Command honcho Curtis LeMay, who advocated megatonnage bomber planes over ICBMs. Sheehan gives a fascinating run-down of the engineering challenges posed by nuclear missiles, but the main action consists of bureaucratic intrigues, procurement innovations and epic briefings that catch the president's ear and open the funding spigots. Like the author's Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award–winning A Bright Shining Lie, this is a saga of underdog visionaries struggling to redirect a misguided military juggernaut, this time successfully: the author credits Schriever's missiles with keeping the peace and jump-starting the space program and satellite industry. Sheehan's focus on personal initiative and human-scale dramas lends an overly romantic cast to his study of cold war policy making and the arms race, but it makes for an engrossing read.

Though this is called the second edition of the 1971 Macmillan set, all of the articles are new. They cover policy and curriculum issues (Accreditation in the United States, Class size and student learning, Scheduling, Single-sex institutions); learning (Categorization and concept learning, Learning theory); assessment (General educational development test, Statewide testing); standards (School reform, Standards movement in American education); history and culture (G.I. Bill of Rights; Islam; Special education: History of); legislation (No Child Left Behind Act of 2001) ; and profiles of organizations, schools, and people (Gary schools; Harvard University; Military academies; Montessori, Maria). The writing is well edited and accessible, with more than 850 signed articles from nearly the same number of experts.

Articles range from 1 to 20 pages or more. Topics that are quite broad (e.g., Risk behaviors) are divided into multiple sections (e.g., Drug use among teens, Suicide, Teen pregnancy, etc.). Such sections contain individual bibliographies. Bibliographies cite both primary and secondary literature as well as Internet resources, such as government or association sites, when appropriate.

The primary focus appears to be on U.S. practices and institutions, from preschool to higher education. However, international coverage can be found throughout the set in articles on countries or regions (Canada, South Asia), as well as within topics (e.g., "Comparing Science Education Requirements around the World" in the essay on Science Education, or Rural Education: International Context). Readers will have to look elsewhere for an overview of some subjects, such as adult education and academic libraries, for which there are no entries.

Volume 8 contains some useful appendixes as well as a detailed subject index. Appendix 1 lists assessment and achievement tests, with a summary of audience and purpose, and contact information. Next is a listing of state departments of education, followed by the large appendix 3, titled "Court Cases, Legislation, and International Agreements." These original source documents--46 in all--were deemed "essential." They include Wisconsin v. Yoder (1972), Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862, and Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). Appendixes 4, 5, and 6 list Internet resources (international and domestic), a very brief general bibliography, and an outline of contents in conceptual format, respectively.

With its wider range and in-depth treatment of topics, this new edition of the Encyclopedia of Education will complement more specialized education references and those with shorter entries, such as Encyclopedia of American Education (2d ed., Facts On File, 2001). It will be a standard in academic libraries supporting education programs.

Containing more than 400 entries ranging in length from 500 to 5,000 words, this encyclopedia covers a wide range of topics: media associations and organizations, journalist biographies, laws and legislation, technological innovations, journalism history, and more. Arranged alphabetically, each entry includes a helpful bibliography. The diverse range of topics (Boxing journalism, Chinese American press, Obituaries, Weekly Reader, to name a few) makes it a particularly useful reference source. The work omits or provides little coverage on some important topics, for example, biographies of the prolific media critic Howard Kurtz and muckraking journalist I. F. Stone; the history of journalism education; and media watchdog organizations. There are only a few entries on the burgeoning Hispanic media, which serves the largest minority group in America. Since the huge topic of American journalism has been compressed into a single volume instead of a multivolume work, it is inevitable that many topics might be omitted. A few entries are marred by a lack of balance. In terms of book design, the work would have been enhanced with illustrations or black-and-white photographs. Despite these problems, this volume serves as a good reference source for both large public and academic libraries.

The encyclopedia attempts to bridge the gap that exists between communication theory and anthropology, psychology, sociology, and other disciplines that study religion. To accomplish its goal, it examines such issues as individual communication with deity, the communication aspects of ritual, and the ways in which media have affected religious culture. Each of the 124 articles fits into one of 5 broad topic areas: "Alternative Religious Movements," "Forms of Communication and Media," "Historical Periods," "Key Concepts," and "Religious Traditions." Entry topics range widely; examples include Baha'i, Humor and laughter, Jihad, Journalism, Native American religion, Profane communication, Sports, and Wicca. The article Body decoration is fairly typical. Continuing over 5 clearly written pages, it explains body decoration in the context of religious history and experience, describes its forms and patterns, and examines its significance as expressed in rites of passage, rituals, festivals, marriage ceremonies, and death. Occasionally, entries include brief sections of primary source material. For example, Libraries includes the mission statement of the American Theological Library Association. Entries are accompanied by lists of additional readings and a small number of black-and-white photos. This is a fine example of a single-volume subject encyclopedia. Furthermore, it does an excellent job treating a highly multidisciplinary topic. It is a recommended purchase for collections that support research on the topic.

The M48 Patton was one of the U.S army's principal main battle tanks of the Cold War, with models in service from the early 1950s to the 1990s. The M48 was the U.S. Army and Marine Corps primary tank during the Vietnam War. It was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries. The tank belongs to the Patton family of tanks, named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and one of the earliest American advocates for the use of tanks in battle. It was a further development of the M47 Patton tank.

The M48 Patton tank was designed to replace the previous M47 Pattons and M4 Shermans. Although largely resembling the M47, the M48 Patton was a completely new tank design despite a rough similarity from a distance. Some M48A5 models served well into the 80s. Internationally, many various M48 Patton models remain in service.

The 105 mm Gun Full Tracked Combat Tank, M60, is also known (but was never officially named) as the M60 Patton, and is a second-generation main battle tank (MBT) introduced in December 1960. It was widely used by the U.S. and its Cold War allies, especially those in NATO, and remains in service throughout the world today despite being superseded by the M1 Abrams. Egypt is currently the largest operator with 1,700 upgraded M60A3s, Turkey is second with more than 900 upgraded units in service, and Israel is third with over 700 units of Israeli variants.

This book describes the struggle to desegregate the post-World War II U. S. Army Air Forces and its successor, the U. S. Air Force, and the remarkable advances made during the next two decades to end racial segregation and move towards equality of treatment of Negro airmen. The author, Lt. Col. Alan L. Gropman, a former Instructor of History at the U. S. Air Force Academy, received his doctorate degree from Tufts University. His dissertation served as the basis for this volume. In it, the author describes the fight to end segregation within the Air Force following President Harry S. Truman's issuance of an executive order directing the integration of the armed forces. Despite resistance to this order, fueled by heated segregationist opposition, integration moved ahead somewhat slowly under the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Progress increased during the administration of President John F. Kennedy, which saw major advances toward achieving equality for Negro servicemen.
Colonel Gropman's study is a detailed, comprehensive, and, in many respects, a documentary account. The crucial events it describes more than justify the unusually extended treatment they receive. The volume thus provides a permanent record of this turbulent period in race relations and constitutes a significant contribution to the history of the Air Force.

The Panic of 1819 was America's first experience of the boom-bust cycle and the subsequent depression was one of the most dramatic economic crises experienced by the US during the nineteenth century. Focusing on the Commonwealth of Virginia, Haulman analyzes the economic conditions which contributed to the boom, the pressures which caused the Panic, the characteristics of the ensuing depression and its impacts on Virginia and the nation. Following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the American economy, and especially Virginia's, was boosted by booming agricultural exports and transatlantic trade, which in turn lead to intense land speculation westwards. Adult/High School–Having graduated from William and Mary, Soffee, the nerd girl of the title and a longtime fan of hair-metal bands, decided that Virginia was not the place to enjoy her passion for the music. And so, with a vague statement of interest in her writing on music by the editor of a metal magazine in Hollywood, she set off for L.A. What she found there was not what she had expected: certainly not her dream of becoming the next great music critic. But the years she spent in L.A. were not without interest as she hit high points and low before having to accept the reality of the situation, aided by the triumph of grunge over metal and her own alcohol and drug addictions. This is not an unusual story; any number of memoirs by young writers chronicle those first uncertain years out of school. Yet Soffee's stands out for its humor and its lack of self-absorption and self-importance. The author has no illusions about the reality of her life at that time, nor does she now condemn it as wasted years. Neither a cautionary tale nor a paean to living it up, Nerd Girl will resonate with teens.

Sisk (Honky-Tonks: Guide to Country Dancin' and Romancin') opens with a warm dedication and a note of thanks to the late country star Buck Owens. In the subsequent 56 chapters, however, she paints a picture of Owens as a megalomaniacal, sex-addicted, song-stealing skinflint, likening him at times to a vampire, a man who once belittled a 10-year-old who played guitar for him. Owens was born in Texas in 1929, but made the migration west during the Depression, settling in Bakersfield, Calif., developing a distinct sound with songs like "Act Naturally" that consistently put him atop country music charts in the 1960s. A shrewd businessman, he later became widely known for cohosting the long-running TV show Hee Haw. Owens, who died in 2006, cooperated with Sisk for three years in the late 1990s on an authorized biography before nixing the agreement. The stories of Owens as the Caligula of country music have compelling potential, but Sisk's narrative is plodding. Although the book is billed as a biography of Owens, he is kept at a distance, and the reader learns very little about his music or his side of the story. Sisk instead focuses on what those close to Owens told her about his behavior. Sadly, the Bakersfield sound that made Owens famous and influenced many gets short shrift in this tiresome exposeÌü.
