Robert A. Pastor - Exiting The Whirlpool, U.S. For eign Policy Toward Latin America And The Caribbean (2001).jpg

In this second edition of Whirlpool, Pastor provides an overview of US Latin American policy under Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, with special attention devoted to the role played by Congress. Next he looks at the recurring challenges faced by the United States - how the United States has tried but often failed to manage succession crises, stop revolutionaries, promote elections, and encourage development. Pastor offers a series of far-reaching policy recommendations for exiting the whirlpool, based on a renunciation of unilateral intervention and a forging of a freer trade area. This second edition is thoroughly updated, with detailed new considerations of the cases of Nicaragua and Mexico in particular, and of the concept of hemispheric community.

Charles C. Alexander - Breaking the Slump (2002).jpg

Alexander, author of a fine biography of Ty Cobb and other baseball books, doesn't strike out with this history of baseball from 1930 until American entry into World War II. But he doesn't get good wood on the ball either. It seems a natural to combine an analysis of the last decade of what some refer to as baseball's Golden Age with such a definitive event as the Great Depression. How did baseball and a struggling nation relate? Did the antics of Dizzy Dean and the Gashouse Gang, the supremacy of the lordly Yankees, and the exuberance of the barnstorming Negro Leaguers deliver fans from their suffering, if only for the few hours of a game's duration? Or was baseball only a diversion, something to be set aside if a choice had to be made between tickets or a meal? While Alexander examines the baseball of the time in great detail and also speaks about the Depression, he never entirely melds the two. In addition, while he offers an exhaustive season-by-season analysis, it feels too much like a laundry list whose format could just as well be a chronological time line. A good overview but not compelling reading, this is recommended for baseball collections lacking other resources about the decade. Jim Burns, Jacksonville P.L., FL

01 - USA - Denise H. Sutton - Globalizing Ideal Beauty, How Female...Agency Redefined Beauty for the Twentieth Century 2009.jpg

Globalizing Ideal Beauty is the forgotten story of a group of women copywriters whose successful ad campaigns went international in the 1920s and spread an American notion of feminine appeal from Bangor to Bangkok. Sutton’s approach has all the complexity of the real world and is grounded in a huge body of original archival research that has so far remained largely untapped.

Nikki Sixx - The Heroin Diaries, A Year in the Lif e of a Shattered Rock Star (2008).jpg

In one of the most unique memoirs of addiction ever published, Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx shares mesmerizing diary entries from the year he spiraled out of control in a haze of heroin and cocaine, presented alongside riveting commentary from people who were there at the time, and from Nikki himself.
When Motley Crue was at the height of its fame, there wasn't any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn't do. He spent days - sometimes alone, sometimes with other addicts, friends, and lovers - in a coke and heroin-fueled daze. The highs were high, and Nikki's journal entries reveal some euphoria and joy. But the lows were lower, often ending with Nikki in his closet, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and wrapped in paranoid delusions.
Here, Nikki shares those diary entries - some poetic, some scatterbrained, some bizarre - and reflects on that time. Joining him are Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Slash, Rick Nielsen, Bob Rock, and a host of ex-managers, ex-lovers, and more.
Brutally honest, utterly riveting, and shockingly moving, The Heroin Diaries follows Nikki during the year he plunged to rock bottom - and his courageous decision to pick himself up and start living again.

Tom Angotti - New York for Sale, Community Plannin g Confronts Global Real Estate (2008).jpg

Remarkably, grassroots-based community planning flourishes in New York City—the self-proclaimed "real estate capital of the world"—with at least seventy community plans for different neighborhoods throughout the city. Most of these were developed during fierce struggles against gentrification, displacement, and environmental hazards, and most got little or no support from government. In fact, community-based plans in New York far outnumber the land-use plans produced by government agencies.

In New York for Sale, Tom Angotti tells some of the stories of community planning in New York City: how activists moved beyond simple protests and began to formulate community plans to protect neighborhoods against urban renewal, real estate mega-projects, gentrification, and environmental hazards.

Angotti, both observer of and longtime participant in New York community planning, focuses on the close relationships among community planning, political strategy, and control over land. After describing the political economy of New York City real estate, its close ties to global financial capital, and the roots of community planning in social movements and community organizing, Angotti turns to specifics. He tells of two pioneering plans forged in reaction to urban renewal plans (including the first community plan in the city, the 1961 Cooper Square Alternate Plan—a response to a Robert Moses urban renewal scheme); struggles for environmental justice, including battles over incinerators, sludge, and garbage; plans officially adopted by the city; and plans dominated by powerful real estate interests. Finally, Angotti proposes strategies for progressive, inclusive community planning not only for New York City but for anywhere that neighborhoods want to protect themselves and their land. New York for Sale teaches the empowering lesson that community plans can challenge market-driven development even in global cities with powerful real estate industries.

01 - USA - Anne Colby, Thomas Ehrlich, Elizabeth Beaumont, Jason ...uates for Lives of Moral and Civic Responsibility 2003.jpg

"The authors have provided a superb account of civic education on college and university campuses in these troubled times. They combine specific examples of best practices with an exceptionally thoughtful philosophical exploration of the meaning and impact of civic learning."
— Nannerl O. Keohane, president, Duke University
"A comprehensive, thoughtful, and beautifully crafted analysis of American higher education's actual and potential role in preparing undergraduates for citizenship and life. If you have any interest in the civic and moral education of our nation's college students, read this book!"
— Alexander W. Astin, Allan Murray Cartter Professor and Director, Higher Education Research Institute, University of California, Los Angeles
"Americans today are more conscious than they have been for many decades that free institutions cannot be taken for granted. The very survival of self-government depends on the character and capabilities of citizens committed to a public good beyond the narrow confines of self-interest. Educating Citizens is a profoundly timely and enlightening book in these circumstances. The authors enable us to understand a neglected aspect of students experience in colleges and universities and help us chart a new and compelling future for higher education in America."

Julian E. Zelizer - The Presidency of George W. Bu sh, A First Historical Assessment (2010).jpg

The Presidency of George W. Bush brings together some of today's top American historians to offer the first in-depth look at one of the most controversial U.S. presidencies. Emotions surrounding the Bush presidency continue to run high--conservatives steadfastly defend its achievements, liberals call it a disgrace. This book examines the successes as well as the failures, covering every major aspect of Bush's two terms in office. It puts issues in broad historical context to reveal the forces that shaped and constrained Bush's presidency--and the ways his presidency reshaped the nation. The Presidency of George W. Bush features contributions by Mary L. Dudziak, Gary Gerstle, David Greenberg, Meg Jacobs, Michael Kazin, Kevin M. Kruse, Nelson Lichtenstein, Fredrik Logevall, Timothy Naftali, James T. Patterson, and the book's editor, Julian E. Zelizer. Each chapter tackles some important aspect of Bush's administration--such as presidential power, law, the war on terror, the Iraq invasion, economic policy, and religion--and helps readers understand why Bush made the decisions he did. Taking readers behind the headlines of momentous events, the contributors show how the quandaries of the Bush presidency were essentially those of conservatism itself, which was confronted by the hard realities of governance. They demonstrate how in fact Bush frequently disappointed the Right, and how Barack Obama's 2008 election victory cast the very tenets of conservatism in doubt. History will be the ultimate judge of Bush's legacy, and the assessment begins with this book.

Kelby Ouchley - Flora and Fauna of the Civil War, An Environmental Reference Guide (2010).jpg

During the Civil War, humans impacted plants and animals on an unprecedented scale as soldiers on both sides waged the most environmentally destructive war ever on American soil. Refugees and armies alike tramped across the landscape foraging for food, shelter, and fuel. Wild plants and animals formed barriers for armies and carried disease, yet also provided medicine and raw materials necessary to implement war, greatly influencing the day-to-day life of soldiers and civilians. Of the thousands of books written about the Civil War, few mention the environment, and none address the topic as a principal theme. In Flora and Fauna of the Civil War, Kelby Ouchley blends traditional and natural history to create a unique text that explores both the impact of the Civil War on the surrounding environment and the reciprocal influence of plants and animals on the war effort. The war generated an abundance of letters, diaries, and journals in which soldiers and civilians penned descriptions of plants and animals, sometimes as a brief comment in passing and other times as part of a noteworthy event in their lives. Ouchley collects and organizes these first-person accounts of the Civil War environment, adding expert analysis and commentary in order to offer an array of fascinating insights on the natural history of the era. After discussing the physical setting of the war and exploring humans' attitudes toward nature during the Civil War period, Ouchley presents the flora and fauna by individual species or closely related group in the words of the participants themselves. From ash trees to willows, from alligators to white-tailed deer, the excerpts provide glimpses of personal encounters with the natural world during the war, revealing how soldiers and civilians thought about and interacted with wild flora and fauna in a time of epic historical events. Collectively, no better sources exist to reveal human attitudes toward the environment in the Civil War era. This one-of-a-kind reference book will spark widespread interest among Civil War scholars, writers, and enthusiasts, as well as environmental historians.

01 - USA - Michael Lynch, Simon A. Cole, Ruth McNally, and Kathle...ne, The Contentious History of DNA Fingerprinting 2009.jpg

DNA profiling—commonly known as DNA fingerprinting—is often heralded as unassailable criminal evidence, a veritable “truth machine” that can overturn convictions based on eyewitness testimony, confessions, and other forms of forensic evidence. But DNA evidence is far from infallible. Truth Machine traces the controversial history of DNA fingerprinting by looking at court cases in the United States and United Kingdom beginning in the mid-1980s, when the practice was invented, and continuing until the present. Ultimately, Truth Machine presents compelling evidence of the obstacles and opportunities at the intersection of science, technology, sociology, and law.

Randal Pinkett, Jeffrey Robinson, Philana Patterso n - Black Faces in White Places, 10 Game-Changing Strategies to Achieve Success and Find Greatness ( 2010).jpg

01 - USA - Randal Pinkett, Jeffrey Robinson, Philana Patterson - ... Strategies to Achieve Success and Find Greatness 2010.jpg

If the name Randal Pinkett sounds familiar, it may be because Pinkett was the first African-American winner on The Apprentice. When he won, this black man also became the only contestant to be asked to share his victory with a white woman. The request (and Pinkett's subsequent refusal) set off a firestorm of controversy that inevitably focused on the issue of race in the American workplace and in society. For generations, African-Americans have been told that to succeed, they need to work twice as hard as everyone else. But as millions of black Americans were reminded by Pinkett's experience, sometimes hard work is not enough. Black Faces in White Places is about "the game" that is, the competitive world in which we all live and work. The book of fers 10 revolutionary strategies for playing, mastering, and chang ing the game for the current generation, while under taking a whole sale redefinition of the rules for those who will follow. It is not only about shattering the old "glass ceiling," but also about examining the four dimensions of the contemporary black exper ience: identity, society, meritocracy, and opportunity. Ultimately, it is about changing the very concept of success itself. Based on the authors' considerable experiences in business, in the public eye, and in the minority, the book shows how African-American professionals can (and must) think and act both Entrepreneurially and "Intrapreneurially," combine their collective strengths with the wisdom of others, and plant the seeds of a positive and lasting legacy.

Pat Conroy, Suzanne Williamson Pollak - The Pat Co nroy Cookbook, Recipes of My Life (2004).jpg

This effort from the author of The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides is a joy on several levels. Conroy might not be the first to disguise a memoir as a collection of foodstuffs, but it's hard to imagine a more entertaining, honest and outlandish effort. In 21 chapters and 100 recipes, he traces his masticating, lusting, family-crazed, traveling life from a dysfunctional childhood in the South (with a tyrannical father and a mother who thought of cooking as "slave labor"), to gourmet adventures in Rome, Paris and the table of Alain Ducasse. The book aches with tales of times when eating is at its most urgent: in the face of love, or death, after an all-nighter with the guys or in the company of other great eaters. It's hard not to admire Conroy's innate ability to spin a yarn. And the food's not bad, either. From Conroy's days in the Carolina Low Country there are Crab Cakes and Peach Pie. In Italy, it's Ribollita and Saltimbocca alla Romana. A chapter entitled "Why Dying Down South Is More Fun" suggests proper fare for mourning, such as Pickled Shrimp and Grits Casserole. As Robert Frost might have pointed out, writing prose in a cookbook is like playing tennis without a net. Conroy is free to scatter his memories like buckshot with no real worries of chapter endings, plot lines and character development. In his hands, the technique propels both writer and reader into a state of fullness.

Neil Sheehan - A Fiery Peace in a Cold War, Bernar d Schriever and the Ultimate Weapon (2010).jpg

The military-industrial complex proves an unlikely arena for plucky individualism in this history of the men who built America's intercontinental ballistic missile program in the 1950s and '60s. Sheehan paints air force Gen. Bernard Schriever and his colorful band of military aides, civilian patrons, defense intellectuals and aerospace entrepreneurs as a guerrilla insurgency fighting Pentagon red tape, and a hostile air force brass, led by Strategic Air Command honcho Curtis LeMay, who advocated megatonnage bomber planes over ICBMs. Sheehan gives a fascinating run-down of the engineering challenges posed by nuclear missiles, but the main action consists of bureaucratic intrigues, procurement innovations and epic briefings that catch the president's ear and open the funding spigots. Like the author's Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award–winning A Bright Shining Lie, this is a saga of underdog visionaries struggling to redirect a misguided military juggernaut, this time successfully: the author credits Schriever's missiles with keeping the peace and jump-starting the space program and satellite industry. Sheehan's focus on personal initiative and human-scale dramas lends an overly romantic cast to his study of cold war policy making and the arms race, but it makes for an engrossing read.

James W. Guthrie - Encyclopedia of Education, 8 vo l. set (2002).jpg

Though this is called the second edition of the 1971 Macmillan set, all of the articles are new. They cover policy and curriculum issues (Accreditation in the United States, Class size and student learning, Scheduling, Single-sex institutions); learning (Categorization and concept learning, Learning theory); assessment (General educational development test, Statewide testing); standards (School reform, Standards movement in American education); history and culture (G.I. Bill of Rights; Islam; Special education: History of); legislation (No Child Left Behind Act of 2001) ; and profiles of organizations, schools, and people (Gary schools; Harvard University; Military academies; Montessori, Maria). The writing is well edited and accessible, with more than 850 signed articles from nearly the same number of experts.

Articles range from 1 to 20 pages or more. Topics that are quite broad (e.g., Risk behaviors) are divided into multiple sections (e.g., Drug use among teens, Suicide, Teen pregnancy, etc.). Such sections contain individual bibliographies. Bibliographies cite both primary and secondary literature as well as Internet resources, such as government or association sites, when appropriate.

The primary focus appears to be on U.S. practices and institutions, from preschool to higher education. However, international coverage can be found throughout the set in articles on countries or regions (Canada, South Asia), as well as within topics (e.g., "Comparing Science Education Requirements around the World" in the essay on Science Education, or Rural Education: International Context). Readers will have to look elsewhere for an overview of some subjects, such as adult education and academic libraries, for which there are no entries.

Volume 8 contains some useful appendixes as well as a detailed subject index. Appendix 1 lists assessment and achievement tests, with a summary of audience and purpose, and contact information. Next is a listing of state departments of education, followed by the large appendix 3, titled "Court Cases, Legislation, and International Agreements." These original source documents--46 in all--were deemed "essential." They include Wisconsin v. Yoder (1972), Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862, and Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). Appendixes 4, 5, and 6 list Internet resources (international and domestic), a very brief general bibliography, and an outline of contents in conceptual format, respectively.

With its wider range and in-depth treatment of topics, this new edition of the Encyclopedia of Education will complement more specialized education references and those with shorter entries, such as Encyclopedia of American Education (2d ed., Facts On File, 2001). It will be a standard in academic libraries supporting education programs.

Stephen L. Vaughan - Enyclopedia of American Journ alism (2008).jpg

Containing more than 400 entries ranging in length from 500 to 5,000 words, this encyclopedia covers a wide range of topics: media associations and organizations, journalist biographies, laws and legislation, technological innovations, journalism history, and more. Arranged alphabetically, each entry includes a helpful bibliography. The diverse range of topics (Boxing journalism, Chinese American press, Obituaries, Weekly Reader, to name a few) makes it a particularly useful reference source. The work omits or provides little coverage on some important topics, for example, biographies of the prolific media critic Howard Kurtz and muckraking journalist I. F. Stone; the history of journalism education; and media watchdog organizations. There are only a few entries on the burgeoning Hispanic media, which serves the largest minority group in America. Since the huge topic of American journalism has been compressed into a single volume instead of a multivolume work, it is inevitable that many topics might be omitted. A few entries are marred by a lack of balance. In terms of book design, the work would have been enhanced with illustrations or black-and-white photographs. Despite these problems, this volume serves as a good reference source for both large public and academic libraries.

Daniel A. Stout - Encyclopedia of Religion, Commun ication, and Media (2006).jpg

The intended audience for this work, part of the Routledge Encyclopedias of Religion and Society series, is university students, journalists, and "theorists, or those seeking a deeper more thorough examination of religion and communication." The encyclopedia attempts to bridge the gap that exists between communication theory and anthropology, psychology, sociology, and other disciplines that study religion. To accomplish its goal, it examines such issues as individual communication with deity, the communication aspects of ritual, and the ways in which media have affected religious culture. Each of the 124 articles fits into one of 5 broad topic areas: "Alternative Religious Movements," "Forms of Communication and Media," "Historical Periods," "Key Concepts," and "Religious Traditions." Entry topics range widely; examples include Baha'i, Humor and laughter, Jihad, Journalism, Native American religion, Profane communication, Sports, and Wicca. The article Body decoration is fairly typical. Continuing over 5 clearly written pages, it explains body decoration in the context of religious history and experience, describes its forms and patterns, and examines its significance as expressed in rites of passage, rituals, festivals, marriage ceremonies, and death. Occasionally, entries include brief sections of primary source material. For example, Libraries includes the mission statement of the American Theological Library Association. Entries are accompanied by lists of additional readings and a small number of black-and-white photos. This is a fine example of a single-volume subject encyclopedia. Furthermore, it does an excellent job treating a highly multidisciplinary topic. It is a recommended purchase for collections that support research on the topic.

Daniel J. Lebbin, Michael J. Parr, George H. Fenwi ck - The American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird C onservation (2010).jpg

01 - USA - Daniel J. Lebbin, Michael J. Parr, George H. Fenwick - ...rican Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation 2010.jpg

Whether we live in cities, in the suburbs, or in the country, birds are ubiquitous features of daily life, so much so that we often take them for granted. But even the casual observer is aware that birds don’t fill our skies in the number they once did. That awareness has spawned conservation action that has led to notable successes, including the recovery of some of the nation’s most emblematic species, such as the Bald Eagle, Brown Pelican, Whooping Crane, and Peregrine Falcon. Despite this, a third of all American bird species are in trouble—in many cases, they’re in imminent danger of extinction. The most authoritative account ever published of the threats these species face, The American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation will be the definitive book on the subject.

The Guide presents for the first time anywhere a classification system and threat analysis for bird habitats in the United States, the most thorough and scientifically credible assessment of threats to birds published to date, as well as a new list of birds of conservation concern. Filled with beautiful color illustrations and original range maps, the Guide is a timely, important, and inspiring reference for birders and anyone else interested in conserving North America’s avian fauna. But this book is far more than another shout of crisis. The Guide also lays out a concrete and achievable plan of long-term action to safeguard our country’s rich bird life. Ultimately, it is an argument for hope. Whether you spend your early weekend mornings crouched in silence with binoculars in hand, hoping to check another species off your list, or you’ve never given much thought to bird conservation, you’ll appreciate the visual power and intellectual scope of these pages.

Born in Batle Special - M-48-60 Patton Main Battle Tank (1979).jpg

The M48 Patton was one of the U.S army's principal main battle tanks of the Cold War, with models in service from the early 1950s to the 1990s. The M48 was the U.S. Army and Marine Corps primary tank during the Vietnam War. It was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries. The tank belongs to the Patton family of tanks, named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and one of the earliest American advocates for the use of tanks in battle. It was a further development of the M47 Patton tank.

The M48 Patton tank was designed to replace the previous M47 Pattons and M4 Shermans. Although largely resembling the M47, the M48 Patton was a completely new tank design despite a rough similarity from a distance. Some M48A5 models served well into the 80s. Internationally, many various M48 Patton models remain in service.

The 105 mm Gun Full Tracked Combat Tank, M60, is also known (but was never officially named) as the M60 Patton, and is a second-generation main battle tank (MBT) introduced in December 1960. It was widely used by the U.S. and its Cold War allies, especially those in NATO, and remains in service throughout the world today despite being superseded by the M1 Abrams. Egypt is currently the largest operator with 1,700 upgraded M60A3s, Turkey is second with more than 900 upgraded units in service, and Israel is third with over 700 units of Israeli variants.
