Black Americans of Achievement - Mary Lawler - Mar cus Garvey, Black Nationalist (2004).jpg

Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., ONH (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940) was a Jamaican publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator who was a staunch proponent of the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, to which end he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).

Prior to the twentieth century, leaders such as Prince Hall, Martin Delany, Edward Wilmot Blyden, and Henry Highland Garnet advocated the involvement of the African diaspora in African affairs. Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement and economic empowerment focusing on Africa known as Garveyism. Promoted by the UNIA as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam to the Rastafari movement (which proclaims Garvey as a prophet). The intent of the movement was for those of African ancestry to "redeem" Africa and for the European colonial powers to leave it. His essential ideas about Africa were stated in an editorial in the Negro World titled “African Fundamentalism” where he wrote:

“ Our union must know no clime, boundary, or nationality… let us hold together under all climes and in every country…

Black Americans of Achievement - Terry Bisson - Na t Turner, Slave Revolt Leader (2004).jpg

Nathaniel "Nat" Turner (October 2, 1800 – November 11, 1831) was an American slave who led a slave rebellion in Virginia on August 21, 1831 that resulted in 56 white deaths and over 55 black deaths, the largest number of fatalities to occur in one uprising prior to the American Civil War in the southern United States. He gathered supporters in Southampton County, Virginia. Turner was convicted, sentenced to death, and executed. In the aftermath, the state executed 56 blacks accused of being part of Turner's slave rebellion. Two hundred blacks were also beaten and killed by white militias and mobs reacting with violence. Across Virginia and other southern states, state legislators passed new laws prohibiting education of slaves and free blacks, restricting rights of assembly and other civil rights for free blacks, and requiring white ministers to be present at black worship services.

Henry Goldschmidt, Elizabeth McAlister - Race, Nat ion, and Religion in the Americas (2004).jpeg

This collection of all new essays will explore the complex and unstable articulations of race and religion that have helped to produce "Black," "White," "Creole," "Indian," "Asian," and other racialized identities and communities in the Americas. Drawing on original research in a range of disciplines, the authors will investigate: 1) how the intertwined categories of race and religion have defined, and been defined by, global relations of power and inequality; 2) how racial and religious identities shape the everyday lives of individuals and communities; and 3) how racialized and marginalized communities use religion and religious discourses to contest the persistent power of racism in societies structured by inequality. Taken together, these essays will define a new standard of critical conversation on race and religion throughout the Americas.

Mike Hill - After Whiteness, Unmaking an American Majority (2004).jpg

As each new census bears out, the rise of multiracialism in the United States will inevitably result in a white minority. In spite of the recent proliferation of academic studies and popular discourse on whiteness, however, there has been little discussion of the future: what comes after whiteness? On the brink of what many are now imagining as a post-white American future, it remains a matter of both popular and academic uncertainty as to what will emerge in its place.

Thomas L. Friedman - The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Understanding Globalization (1999).jpg

Friedman, the well-traveled New York Times foreign-affairs columnist, peppers The Lexus and the Olive Tree with stories that illustrate his central theme: that globalization--the Lexus--is the central organizing principle of the post-cold war world, even though many individuals and nations resist by holding onto what has traditionally mattered to them--the olive tree.
Problem is, few of us understand what exactly globalization means. As Friedman sees it, the concept, at first glance, is all about American hegemony, about Disneyfication of all corners of the earth. But the reality, thank goodness, is far more complex than that, involving international relations, global markets, and the rise of the power of individuals (Bill Gates, Osama Bin Laden) relative to the power of nations.

Naomi Cahn - Red Families v. Blue Families, Legal Polarization and the Creation of Culture (2010).jpg

Red Families v. Blue Families identifies a new family model geared for the post-industrial economy. Rooted in the urban middle class, the coasts and the "blue states" in the last three presidential elections, the Blue Family Paradigm emphasizes the importance of women's as well as men's workforce participation, egalitarian gender roles, and the delay of family formation until both parents are emotionally and financially ready. By contrast, the Red Family Paradigm--associated with the Bible Belt, the mountain west, and rural America--rejects these new family norms, viewing the change in moral and sexual values as a crisis. In this world, the prospect of teen childbirth is the necessary deterrent to premarital sex, marriage is a sacred undertaking between a man and a woman, and divorce is society's greatest moral challenge. Yet, the changing economy is rapidly eliminating the stable, blue collar jobs that have historically supported young families, and early marriage and childbearing derail the education needed to prosper. The result is that the areas of the country most committed to traditional values have the highest divorce and teen pregnancy rates, fueling greater calls to reinstill traditional values. Featuring the groundbreaking research first hailed in The New Yorker, this penetrating book will transform our understanding of contemporary American culture and law. The authors show how the Red-Blue divide goes much deeper than this value system conflict--the Red States have increasingly said "no" to Blue State legal norms, and, as a result, family law has been rent in two. The authors close with a consideration of where these different family systems still overlap, and suggest solutions that permit rebuilding support for both types of families in changing economic circumstances.Incorporating results from the 2008 election, Red Families v. Blue Families will reshape the debate surrounding the culture wars and the emergence of red and blue America.

Joni Eareckson Tada - The God I Love, A Lifetime o f Walking with Jesus (2003).jpg

"Memory means everything to me," writes Tada. In this tender, beautifully written memoir, she reflects with vivid detail on the idyllic Maryland childhood that shaped her Christian faith and the 1967 diving accident that left her a quadriplegic but showed her that "there are more important things in life than walking." As the youngest of four girls, Tada idolized her father and namesake, Johnny, who instilled in her a daredevil sense of adventure and shaped her view of God. When as a teenager she drifted from faith, she prayed that God would turn her around. Tada believes the accident she had at age 17 was God's response: "It wasn't some flip-of-the-coin in the cosmos, some turn in the universe's roulette wheel.

Joni Eareckson Tada is an evangelical Christian author, radio host, and founder of Joni and Friends, an organization "accelerating Christian ministry in the disability community." "Joni" is pronounced as if it were spelled "Johnny" as she was named after her father.

Louis Pizzitola - Hearst Over Hollywood (2002).jpg

This admirable addition to Columbia's expansive Film and Culture series explores an underreported facet of William Randoph Hearst's media dominance: his command of early cinema. Although Citizen Kane etched W.R. in popular memory as a newspaperman, Hearst understood film's "enormous attention-getting potential for communication for the masses" and used it to create fiction and nonfiction forms in the medium that promoted positions ranging from pro-German WWI sentiment to anticommunism. His efforts spanned multiple studio affiliations and international film alliances, and all demonstrated Hearst's overriding aim of exercising worldwide influence.

Tankograd - Michael Franz, Jochen Vollert - US Arm y Gun, Heavy, Motorized, 280mm, M65 Atomic Annie ( 2006).jpg

With the deployment in the 1950s of atomic weapons on both sides of the Cold War, all three branches (Army, Navy, Air Force) of the U.S. military sought to justify fielding nuclear weapons within their individual arsenals. For the U.S. Army, prior to the refinement of tactical nuclear missiles, that meant developing an atomic artillery piece. This weapon was the M-65 280mm Motorized Heavy Gun, also known as the Atomic Cannon.

May of 1950, the Watervliet Arsenal began designing the 280mm Gun T131 for the U.S. Army. This heavy, mobile, long-range gun was developed to fire the W-9 15 kiloton atomic 280mm Projectile T124. By the spring of 1951, the first T131 gun was mounted on the T72 Gun Carriage, and in October, 1952, three T131 guns were demonstrated to the U.S. public at Aberdeen Proving Ground. From 1951 to 1953, 20 guns were manufactured.

The weight of the gun and carriage was 94,000 lbs/42,582 kg, (47 tons). The length of the gun carriage was 38'-5" or 11.71 meters. The gun could be emplaced and set up for firing in approximately 12 minutes, and returned to the traveling mode in approximately 15 minutes. The publicly-acknowledged maximum range of the 280mm gun was 20 miles, hitting within 20 yards or less of the desired target. An Army veteran assigned to M-65s in Okinawa reported the actual maximum range was 35 miles.

In 1950, the Kenworth Motor Truck Company began the manufacture of the M-249 4x4 Heavy Gun-Lifting Front Truck and the M-250 4x4 Heavy Gun-Lifting Rear Truck, to transport the T131 Gun. From 1952 through 1953, 33 Front and 33 Rear Trucks were manufactured. Each truck was powered by a Continental AO-895-4 six-cylinder engine, with a maximum output of 375 hp and a top speed of 45 mph. The empty weight of the M-249 Front Truck was 37,950 lbs/17,191 kg (19 tons); the empty weight of the M-250 Rear Truck was 35,910 lbs/16,267 kg (18 tons).

The entire assembly of two trucks and one gun was designated the M-65, although the unofficial, popular name given this machine was "Atomic Annie." Total weight of the M-65 was 172,865 lbs/78,308 kg (86.4 tons). The two trucks were operated by two drivers, and the Front Truck driver could be given control of the brakes in both trucks. Communication between drivers was by a system of headset intercoms. Total length of the M-65 was 85'-0"/26 meters, and width was 10'-0"/3.12 meters. The 20 M-65s were deployed primarily in West Germany, with six units deployed in Okinawa. The M-65s were operational from 1953 to 1963, when they were replaced due to the availability of nuclear shells for the simpler, cheaper, more operationally flexible 8" howitzers. Most of the M-65s were scrapped, although a few have been preserved as museum pieces, such as at The Armored Fighting Vehicles Museum at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland, and at The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

01 - USA - Conor OClery - The Billionaire Who Wasnt, How Chuck Fe...de and Gave Away a Fortune Without Anyone Knowing 2008.jpg

Chuck Feeney was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to a blue-collar Irish-American family during the Depression. After service in the Korean War, he made a fortune as founder of Duty Free Shoppers, the world’s largest duty-free retail chain. By 1988, he was hailed by Forbes Magazine as the twenty-fourth richest American alive. But secretly Feeney had already transferred all his wealth to his foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies. Only in 1997 when he sold his duty free interests, was he “outed” as one of the greatest and most mysterious American philanthropists in modern times. After going “underground” again, he emerged in 2005 to cooperate on a biography promoting giving while living. Now in his mid-seventies, Feeney is determined his foundation should spend down the remaining $4 billion in his lifetime.
