Gary Laderman - Rest in Peace, A Cultural History of Death and the Funeral Home in Twentieth-Century America (2003.jpg

01 - USA - Gary Laderman - Rest in Peace, A Cultural History of De...nd the Funeral Home in Twentieth-Century America 2003.jpg

In 1963, Jessica Mitford's The American Way of Death shocked the nation and provoked scandal throughout the funeral industry. Mitford portrayed undertakers as exploitative businessmen eager to turn a profit off of a poor man's grief. Her book climbed the bestseller list and put the growing and profitable funeral industry on the defensive. Forty years later, Laderman comes to the industry's defense with this thoughtful book. His case is cautious and honest. He presents the industry's history from its inception during the Civil War period up to the present. The author explores American attitudes toward death through various lenses, including cultural, religious and psychological history, which demonstrate a pervasive fascination with death and a desire to share an intimate moment with the dead as a part of the grieving process.

Arnold Krupat - The Voice in the Margin, Native Am erican Literature (1989).jpg

In its consideration of American Indian literature as a rich and exciting body of work, The Voice in the Margin invites us to broaden our notion of what a truly inclusive American literature might be, and of how it might be placed in relation to an internationala "cosmopolitan"literary canon. The book comes at a time when the most influential national media have focused attention on the subject of the literary canon. They have made it an issue not merely of academic but of general public concern, expressing strong opinions on the subject of what the American student should or should not read as essential or core texts. Is the literary canon simply a given of tradition and history, or is it, and must it be, constantly under construction? The question remains hotly contested to the present moment. Arnold Krupat argues that the literary expression of the indigenous peoples of the United States has claims on us to more than marginal attention. Demonstrating a firm grasp of both literary history and contemporary critical theory, he situates Indian literature, traditional and modern, in a variety of contexts and categories. His extensive knowledge of the history and current theory of ethnography recommends the book to anthropologists and folklorists as well as to students and teachers of literature, both canonical and noncanonical. The materials covered, the perspectives considered, and the learning displayed all make The Voice in the Margin a major contribution to the exciting field of contemporary cultural studies.

David Bell - Historicizing Lifestyle, Mediating Ta ste, Consumption and Identity from the 1900s to 19 70s (2005).jpg

Lifestyles have a history, and lifestyle media is fundamentally implicated in this history. This original volume examines issues of taste, media and lifestyle from the 1900s to 1970s, providing a wealth of empirical evidence and key debate from a variety of international perspectives. Including examples as diverse as "Good Housekeeping" and "Playboy", it explores the continuities and discontinuities between the past and present to provide a better understanding about the representation of lifestyle and its relationship to the self. The volume demonstrates how ideas about gender, nation and 'race' problematize the taken-for-granted assumptions about lifestyle, with particular emphasis on the new middle classes in the US.

Immigration to the United States - Lisa Trumbauer - German Immigrants (2004).jpg

This book purports to be a children's book, with large texts. However, the whole thing is done in black and white, the book is huge, and it goes into some moralistic arguments. For instance: don't you see how German Immigrants felt when, in the late thirties and forties, the government forced German newspapers to print an English copy of each edition, so as to prove the newspaper was not passing spy information? Well yes, that sucks, but if you are a culture that is segregating itself from the culture you have joined (refusing to learn the language, staying within your communities, etc.) AND THEN A WAR STARTS WITH YOUR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, it is likely your culture will be looked at with suspect. That sucks, but if anyone was shocked, they shouldn't have been. This book lacks pictures and reads like a textbook. I feel like it was made purposely to supplement classroom material; however, I don't ever really remember doing a specific immigrant unit. I learned about Ellis island and the like but we didn't really get into the various groups who immigrated until high school, and this book is written for students that are much younger. I picked it up because I am German American, but I didn't particularly enjoy "woe is my German ancestry" approach the author took. I think this book is supposed to be an "easy read" for ages 8-12, but I wouldn't suggest it.

Concord 7007 - Michael Green - Armor of the Vietna m War (1) Allied Forces (1998).jpg

In the early days of U.S. involvement in South Vietnam (prior to the 1965 buildup), it was generally believed by America's military leaders that the only ground units suitable to fight in that country were light infantry units. This belief was largely shaped by the terrain and weather of Vietnam.

01 - USA - Michael W. Flamm - Law and Order, Street Crime, Civil U...Unrest, and the Crisis of Liberalism in the 1960s 2005.jpg

In this major new reading of Sartre’s life and work, Paige Arthur traces the relationship between the philosopher’s decades-long commitment to decolonization and his intellectual positions. Where other commentators have focused on the tensions between Sartre’s Marxism and his account of existential freedom, usually to denigrate one in favor of the other, Arthur shows how Sartre’s political engagement with global liberation movements and his philosophical framework developed alongside one another.

Joshua Gunn - Modern Occult Rhetoric, Mass Media a nd the Drama of Secrecy in the Twentieth Century ( 2005).jpg

A broadly interdisciplinary study of the pervasive secrecy in America cultural, political, and religious discourse. The occult has traditionally been understood as the study of secrets of the practice of mysticism or magic. This book broadens our understanding of the occult by treating it as a rhetorical phenomenon tied to language and symbols and more central to American culture than is commonly assumed.
Joshua Gunn approaches the occult as an idiom, examining the ways in which acts of textual criticism and interpretation are occultic in nature, as evident in practices as diverse as academic scholarship, Freemasonry, and television production. Gunn probes, for instance, the ways in which jargon employed by various social and professional groups creates barriers and fosters secrecy. From the theory wars of cultural studies to the Satanic Panic that swept the national mass media in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gunn shows how the paradox of a hidden, buried, or secret meaning that cannot be expressed in language appears time and time again in Western culture. These recurrent patterns, Gunn argues, arise from a generalized, popular anxiety about language and its limitations. Ultimately, Modern Occult Rhetoric demonstrates the indissoluble relationship between language, secrecy, and publicity, and the centrality of suspicion in our daily lives.

John Dewey - Experience And Education (1997).jpg

Experience and Education is the best concise statement on education ever published by John Dewey, the man acknowledged to be the pre-eminent educational theorist of the twentieth century. Written more than two decades after Democracy and Education (Dewey's most comprehensive statement of his position in educational philosophy), this book demonstrates how Dewey reformulated his ideas as a result of his intervening experience with the progressive schools and in the light of the criticisms his theories had received. Analyzing both "traditional" and "progressive" education, Dr. Dewey here insists that neither the old nor the new education is adequate and that each is miseducative because neither of them applies the principles of a carefully developed philosophy of experience. Many pages of this volume illustrate Dr. Dewey's ideas for a philosophy of experience and its relation to education. He particularly urges that all teachers and educators looking for a new movement in education should think in terms of the deeped and larger issues of education rather than in terms of some divisive "ism" about education, even such an "ism" as "progressivism." His philosophy, here expressed in its most essential, most readable form, predicates an American educational system that respects all sources of experience, on that offers a true learning situation that is both historical and social, both orderly and dynamic.

Burrus M. Carnahan - Lincoln on Trial, Southern Ci vilians and the Law of War (2010).jpg

In light of recent controversies and legal actions related to America's treatment of enemy prisoners in the Middle East and Guantánamo Bay, the regulation of government during wartime has become a volatile issue on the global scene. By today's standards, Lincoln's adherence to the laws of war could be considered questionable, and his critics, past and present, have not hesitated to charge that he was a war criminal. In Lincoln on Trial: Southern Civilians and the Law of War, Burrus M. Carnahan conducts an extensive analysis of Lincoln's leadership throughout the Civil War as he struggled to balance his own humanity against the demands of his generals. Carnahan specifically scrutinizes Lincoln's conduct toward Southerners in light of the international legal standards of his time as the president wrestled with issues that included bombardment of cities, collateral damage to civilians, seizure and destruction of property, forced relocation, and the slaughter of hostages. Carnahan investigates a wide range of historical materials from accounts of the Dahlgren raid to the voices of Southern civilians who bore the brunt of extensive wartime destruction. Through analysis of both historic and modern standards of behavior in times of war, a sobering yet sympathetic portrait of one of America's most revered presidents emerges.

Jerome A. Greene - Morning Star Dawn, The Powder R iver Expedition and the Northern Cheyennes, 1876 ( 2003).jpg

From a recognized authority on the High Plains Indians wars comes this narrative history blending both American Indian and U.S. Army perspectives on the attack that destroyed the village of Northern Cheyenne chief Morning Star. Of momentous significance for the Cheyenne as well as the army, this November 1876 encounter, coming exactly six months to the day after the Custer debacle at the Little Bighorn, was part of the Powder River Expedition waged by Brigadier General George Crook against the Indians. Vital to the larger context of the Great Sioux War, the attack on Morning Star's village encouraged the eventual surrender of Crazy Horse and his Sioux followers.
