1. Spontaneous Resistance (1939-1941)
From the invasion of Poland to the incursion into Greece, the Nazis imposed a new order across the whole of Europe.
But right around the continent, resistance fighters spontaneously rose up to carry out a range of different actions, refusing to follow the commands of these incomers.
2. Organised Resistance (1941-1942)
When the Third Reich invaded the Soviet Union, the European Communists slipped into resistance.
In order to continue the fight on a military level, organisations were formed that sought to get in touch with the Allies. Elsewhere, other forms of resistance emerged such as the development of an underground press.
3. The Resistance And The Jewish Question (1942-1943)
Germany intensified their efforts to destroy the European Jewish population and the “Final Solution” got underway.
Faced with this phenomenon, certain members of the Resistance became involved and others not, with some notorious successes and other bitter failures. Meanwhile, some Jews refused to accept the hand they were dealt and organised their own survival, sometimes taking up arms themselves.
4. The Resistance Becomes The Radicalised (1943)
After El Alamein and Stalingrad, the defeat of the Third Reich became a possibility.
The Resistance thus became a means of liberation through the efforts of underground fighters and organised sabotage. At the same time, the Compulsory Work Service, introduced in most countries under German oppression, was the last encouragement needed for those who had previously hesitated to join the struggle.
5. The Resistance In Torment (1943-1944)
Germany intensified its repression of resistance fighters, who were now considered to be a threat.
An improvement in police infiltration techniques led to systematic massacres as well as to the mass deportation of political prisoners. But the prospect of the Normandy landings fired up all the networks both in the armed struggle as in terms of intelligence.
6. Illusions And Disillusions Of The Resistance (1944-1945)
During the last few months before the Liberation, the expectations of the Resistance were huge.
But between internal conflict and unification, the movement was in fluctuation. The majority hoped the Liberation would provoke a new political and social order while others feared the strength of the Communists, but the decisions taken by the key Allies had already decided the fate of many countries.
