Tanks - AFV Armoured Fighting V... - Concord - Armor at War 7008 - Steven J. Za...d-East Wars 1. The Wars Of 1948-1973 1996.jpg

Since the Second World War, the Mid East has been the region that has seen the most extensive conflicts involving armored forces. Indeed, the Arab-Israeli wars have sometimes involved tank battles on a scale that rivaled the colossal encounters at El Alamein or Kursk in World War II. The reasons are both geographic and historic. Desert terrain such as the Sinai has favored mechanized warfare. In addition, the local conflicts in the region became entangled with broader world political developments. The 1948 and 1956 wars in the region were linked to the drives for decolonialization in the developing world; the 1967 and 1973 wars were enmeshed in Cold War tensions. These links to broader global conflicts have meant that the armies in the region have had access to the arsenals of the Great Powers, acting as their surrogates in some cases.
The tragic roots of the conflict in the region are not difficult to trace. A revived Jewish presence in Palestine was the outcome of the horrors of the Holocaust in Europe. The Arab countries in the region, trying to escape colonial bondage with Britain and France, regarded the Jewish presence as another case of illegitimate European interference in the region. The animosities spawned in the first war in 1948 provided the bitter seed for four decades of war in the region.

Tanks - AFV Armou... - Concord - Armor at War 7009 - Steven J. Zaloga - ...ast Wars 2, The Wars Of 1973 To The Present 1998.jpg

This book is the second volume in a series on armored warfare in the Mid-East over the past several decades. The central focus of these books are the wars involving Israel. Other major conflicts in the region, notably the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, are outside the scope of this series. The coverage of this volume is somewhat different than the preceding volume. The first volume covered four major wars, fought in the ideal tank country of the Sinai desert. During the period covered in this book, Israel has been involved in only one major war involving its armored force, the invasion of Lebanon in 1982. All of its fighting during this period has been in the hilly regions of the Levant which are not as suitable for large scale tank operations, and tanks did not play as central a role as in previous wars. Much of the fighting in Lebanon has taken place between various Lebanese militias, and this book provides a unique record of the unusual assortment of equipment used in the civil war fighting. Since the 1982 war, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) has been involved in many small scale actions in southern Lebanon. These have been anti-guerrilla operations rather than conventional war. Nevertheless they have usually involved the employment of armored vehicles. This book examines the shift from the IDF's tank-heavy force prior to 1973 to the more balanced mechanized force which continues to evolve to this day.

Tanks - AFV Armou... - Charles C. Sharp - Soviet Order of Battle WWII 1,... Divisions and Tank Brigades of 1940 - 1942 2005.jpg

The Soviet Army was one of the first in the world to experiment with large tank forces, the first (and nearly the only) army to have a coherent strategic doctrine for using large tank forces, and had the largest tank park in the world when most other armies, including the German, were just starting to acquire tanks. Despite this promising beginning, by 1941 the Red Army's tank forces were so unorganized, untrained, poorly maintained, and spottily equipped that 90% of the largest tank force in the world was massacred in less than 6 weeks.
The story of the Red Armor really starts before there were more than a handful of tanks anywhere in Russia. Unlike the rest of Europe, Russia's military doctrine was not based on her experiences in World War One, but more on the peculiar experience of the Russian Civil War. While military thinking in France, Britain, and Germany tended to be dominated by the WWI problem of breaking through an enemy line - the classic problem of the trenches and basically a tactical or operational question - the Soviets focused on how to strike deep enough to destroy the entire enemy force - the strategic question of how to end the war.
Soviet military thinkers like Frunze, Svechin, Triandafilov, and Issar-son, hammered out a doctrine which, in its simplest form, went like this:
1. Break through the enemy line, by massing enough artillery and infantry to overwhelm the defense at a decisive point
2. Widen the gap with engineers so that mobile forces can use it.
3. Send in horse cavalry and mechanized forces to strike deep into the enemy rear; ideally all the way to his capital to end the war.
Like other armies, the Red Army had a number of tasks for armor to perform. Unlike other armies, the Russians could build enough tanks so that they could try all the various ways of using tanks - almost every type of unit in the Red Army could have its own armor, tailored to its needs. Some of the requirements were the same as those in, for example, the British and French armies: tanks to support infantry and cavalry. Others were peculiar to the Soviets: tanks to support paratroops and amphibious operations.

Tanks - AFV Armoured Fighting... - Osprey - New Vanguard 152 - Steven J Zalog...he Soviet Armys Last Armored Champion 2009.jpg

The Soviet T-80 Standard Tank was the last tank fielded before the Soviet collapse, and the most controversial. Like the US M1 Abrams tank, the T-80 used a turbine power plant rather than a conventional diesel. Although the design was blessed with some of the most sophisticated armament, fire controls, and multi-layer armor ever fielded on a Soviet tank, its power plant remained a source of considerable trouble through its career. It saw very little service in the Chechen War, though T-80 tanks were used in some of the regional conflicts in the former Soviet Union in the 1990s.

The tanks used during the Spanish Civil War are not often examined in any great detail, and are often labeled as little more than test vehicles in a convenient proving ground before World War II. But, with groundbreaking research, armor expert Steven J Zaloga has taken a fresh look at the tanks deployed in Spain, examining how future tanks and armored tactics were shaped and honed by the crews' experiences, and how Germany was able to benefit from these lessons while their Soviet opponents were not.
Based on recently uncovered records of Soviet tankers in Spain and rare archival accounts, this book describes the various tanks deployed in Spain, including the PzKpfw I and the T-26.

Concord 7005 - Steven J. Zaloga - U.S.Tank Destroy ers in Combat, 1941-1945 (1996).jpg

The content of the book is excellent covering the m10 tank destoryer early and late types, sp, 17pdr m10 mk2 achilles variant, m18 76mm hellcat tank destroyer, m36 90mm gmc, m3 75mm gmc with a smatering of m6 37mm gmc. There are many quality photographs inside both in action photos and some photos of factory fresh m10 and achilles, the colour plates are especially nice and will surprise some people with how recently world war 2 era tank destroyers were used in combat. There is ample inspiration for the diorama builder contained in these nice photos and colour plates. The book covers tank destroyers in north africa, the italian campaign, france, battle of the bulge, the pacific and post war use.
