Jonathan Sutherland - World War II Tanks and AFVs (2002).jpg

The British invention of the Tank during World War I revolutionized land warfare. Twenty years later, tanks and other armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) played a key role in the major theatres of World War II. The German Tiger, the American Sherman and the British Churchill - all are names that have become legendary - but there were also many other key vehicles used by the land armies as they fought for supremacy in two hemispheres. Bren Gun Carriers, Armored Personnel Carriers and many other combinations of gun and mobility were invented to fight in different terrain. The desert of North Africa, the frozen plains of Russia and the rolling countryside of central Europe all presented different challenges. This book provides an introduction to the most famous weapons and gives technical specifications of armor, engine and ammunition, together with performance figures for each vehicle featured.

Marsh Gelbart - Tanks, Main Battle Tanks and Light Tanks (1996).jpg

Tanks continue to dominate land warfare. All tanks have to blend and balance three competing characteristics: a high degree of survivability, lethal firepower and mobility over rough terrain. This book assesses the tanks in service around the world today and explains why certain fighting machines command the killing zone.
The 'Brassey's Modern Military Equipment' series has been compiled to provide a well-researched, authoritative reference for soldiers at all levels in the command chain, as well as for the civilian observer. It provides concise and accurate intelligence on vehicles and equipment which are currently in service, with detailed descriptions, photographs and specifications.

Eric Peltz - Speed and Power, Toward an Expedition ary Army (2003).jpg

Using a case study based on the Army's new Stryker Brigade Combat Team, the authors explore how the Army might improve its ability to contribute to prompt, global power projection, that is, strategically responsive early-entry forces for time-critical events. The authors examine options to reach a dual goal: to initiate deployment of the right force capabilities, and then get those capabilities where they need to be as quickly as possible.

Squadron - Armor 13 - Stephen Tunbridge - Centuri on in Action (1976).jpg

During World War II the traditional British doctrine of having specialized categories of tanks to work with infantry on the one hand, and, to operate in armoured divisions against enemy tanks, on the other hand was revised as a result of experience gained in the North African campaigns. In September 1942, the War Office requirement for tank development laid emphasis on the need for a 'universal' or general purpose tank chassis which could be readily adapted to meet various specialized tasks including development in both the above-mentioned Infantry and Cruiser roles. In the past it had been necessary to have a number of chassis designs, each of a distinctive and separate pattern, with all the disadvantages inherent with this lack of standardization.
At the same time as design was in progress on the heavy'Cruiser' A41 in 1944, work was also proceeding on the more heavily armoured 'Infantry' tank, the A45. The two tanks were to have a number of common assemblies in line with the Tank Board's decision of 1942 which had laid emphasis on the advantages to be obtained from standardization of designs for the two categories. It was intended that the weight of the A45 prototypes would be 55 tons with a maximum speed of 18 mph. These prototypes, which were to have a frontal armour of 6 inches equivalent thickness and incorporate the A41 turret and gun, were scheduled to be completed by mid-1946.
But by this time, the Sherman and the Churchill had demonstrated their ability of fulfilling the 'Cruiser' and 'Infantry' roles which had hitherto called for individual particular-purpose vehicles. This led to the abandonment of the separate Cruiser/Infantry concepts as a result of which only the A41 design which successfully met all the requirements for a 'universal' tank was proceeded with. Several years were to elapse before the A45 appeared in quite a different form as the FV 214 Conqueror.

Campaign Chronicles - Martin Marix Evans - Passche ndaele, The Hollow Victory (2005).jpg

Passchendaele is one of the most evocative names associated with the Great War. Yet, as the author demonstrates in this perceptive reassessment, some common assumptions about the course of the battle - and the ways in which it was fought - are mistaken, and should be looked at again.

Tanks - AFV Armou... - Concord - Firepower Pictorial Special 2008 - Greg...g Center, Ultimate in Land Warfare Training 1992.jpg

In 1981, the U.S. Army opened the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California.
Due to the increased range, speed and lethality of modern weapons systems, training areas once considered adequate for entire Army divisions are nov-y barely sufficient to accommodate brigade or even battalion-sized units.
At the NTC. in an area of almost 1 ,000 square miles of open desert terrain, the U.S. Army has constructed the world's most sophisticated and realistic battlefield. The NTC has facilities to conduct both day and night, large scale combined arms training for brigades and regiments. It conducts 1 A training cycles annually for brigade-sized elements from armored and mechanized divisions throughout the continental United States.

John Norris - Anti-Tank Weapons (1997).jpg

The impact of the tank in any conflict scenario is well recognized. Heavily armoured, carrying formidable firepower, capable of travelling at speed in any weather across almost any terrain. The requirement for effective anti-tank systems is, therefore, of paramount concern to all armed forces of all nations. This volume describes all systems commonly available today. From shoulder-fired ATGWs, through to the new and highly sophisticated "fire-and-forget" ground-based and airborned systems. This is an easy-to-use guide to an essential element of a fighting power's deterrent.

Tanks - AFV Armoured Fighting Vehi... - Christopher Chant - World Encyclopaedia ...ry of the Armoured Fighting Machine 1994.jpg

One of the most potent weapons of the 20th century, the tank has evolved over many years of development. Increasingly sophisticated technology has enhanced the tank's domination of all operational conditions, by virtue of its unparalleled combination of offensive and defensive attributes. Firepower, protection and mobility have all been improved continuously in the ceaseless struggle for battlefield supremacy. The tank has a position of unrivalled importance in 20th-century military history. Developed originally by the British to break the deadlock of trench warfare during World War I, the tank proved to be a devastating breakthrough weapon. It's true potential, however, was only fully appreciated by the Germans, who set in train a highly secret tank development programme between the World Wars. This initiative culminated in the revolutionary concept of Blitzkrieg, a strategy based on the use of armour to punch holes in the enemy's defences, and was to result in the Nazi domination of continental Europe. The tank continues to be at the heart of modern strategic thinking, having proved its worth in the 1991 Gulf War.

Concord - Firepower Pictorials Special 1027 - Mic hael Green, Greg Stewart - M60 Tank (1960).jpg

The U.S. Army's Ml Abrams Main Baffle Tank has dominated the civilian press and the military trade journals since the first production model rolled off the assembly line in February. 1980, with untold numbers of stories about its development, fielding, and problems both real and imagined.
Unfortunately, forgotten by many is the fact that the M60 family of tanks will still make up over fifty percent of the U.S. Army's inventory of main battle tanks until the late 1990s.
With the recent thaw in cold war tensions and the announced defense cutbacks by the U.S. Army, use of the M60 tank could last Into the 21st Century both with the U.S. tank fleet and foreign armies.
The history of the M60 tank begins in 1959 when a modified version of the M48A2 Pafton was introduced with a new front hull, a diesel engine, and a 105mm gun. To highlight the improvement over the earlier vehicle, it was redesignated as the 105mm gun tank M60. The M60 series of tanks had, since the beginning of Its production run in early 1960, been considered to be only an interim vehicle intended to serve the U.S. Army until the ideal tank could be designed and built. But, 15,000 tanks later, the M60 tank is still in service around the world. Numerous development programs helped to extend the useful life of the tank and kept it viable as a combat vehicle. Fortunately, the basic design was sound and easily accommodated the many modifications added to it over the years.
The last production version of the M60 tank was the M60A3, which was first introduced into US Army service In 1978.
The external appearance of the M60A3 tank is not very different from the M60A1 tank model. Only the thermal shroud on the gun tube, the wind sensor on top of the turret bustle, and the laser safety shield on the right side rangefinder blister distinguish it as an A3 model.
Unique features of the A3 are its Ml tank type fire control system, which include a laser rangefinder. solid state electronic computer, and a tank thermal sight (TTS for short).
The (TTS) provides a large improvement over image intensification sights as tound on earlier models of the M60 tank. It employs thermal technology so that its detection range is not dependent on moon or starlight. It "sees" as well in total darkness as it does in daylight and can detect targets through smoke, fog, and dust. It can also penetrate camouflage because it senses the heat of objects hidden by natural or manmade materials.
