She loathes it, though, and only thinks about getting back to Clifford. When she receives a phone call that he has died in a German bombing, she is crushed. When her mother dies of the Spanish flu, she quits college and returns home.
She works her way up in Atlanta society and desperately wants a membership at the Piedmont Club. She is refused, however, when she shocks everybody with a sensual dance. Red Upshaw and John Marsh notice Margaret and are immediately drawn to her. At first she is not too impressed with the womanizer Red, knowing he earns his money by bootlegging. However, their dislike soon turns into love, and together they enjoy the wild life of the Jazz Age.
When their engagement is announced, Margaret's family make clear they are against it. The pair still decide to marry, but their marriage is troubled from the start. Red decides to quit his job, so Margaret applies to a newspaper to earn money. She is hired as an interviewer, but does not impress her boss. After gaining more experience, she turns out to be a highly respected reporter.
When Red leaves for Texas, Margaret decides to stay to focus on her career. He returns seven months later and thinks she is having an affair with John. They fight, and Red eventually beats Margaret up severely. The next day, John gives Red money to leave town and never come back. He provides Margaret with a gun to defend herself if Red returns. Margaret and John soon start a relationship and are married in 1925.
By this time, Margaret is working on her first novel, "Gone with the Wind." When it is published, it becomes a huge success. Her fame and money do not do much for her marriage and she soon is estranged from John. When she least expects it, Red visits her, regaining peace after their fight. Red announces he is getting married soon. The end credits say that Red committed suicide not much later, and that Margaret died in 1949, after being struck by a reckless driver.

Her surgeon boyfriend, who has been sarcastically nick named "Mr. Personality" and " and "Settle For" by Syd's best friend (Nurse Brenda), takes this opportunity to offer support and destroys it by telling Syd dying is part of life and she'd be a better doctor if she stayed more remote from her patients and, oh, by the way, "can I come over tonight"? He is surprised when she says "not tonight." Brenda tells Syd to get away for a few days and suggests Syd change her mind and go back to her small hometown for her school reunion. Brenda points out that since Syd hasn't been back since her father's funeral, she'll be the star of the reunion as a successful doctor who wears the same size as she did in high school. Since Syd hasn't talked to anyone in that village, not even her mother, in years, Syd is unprepared for the collision between her memories of the past and the truth she finds in the village of today.
A high-school reunion draws back to small town Bloomfield Dr. Syd Ludwick, who left for a city hospital career years ago but isn't happy with her lukewarm colleague-lover there. She grudgingly moves in at the parental home, now a B&B, as there is no other accommodation in town, but still blames ma Helen Ludwick, the town's busybody, for neglecting her dad while dying, which isn't exactly true. Crucially, Sid also meets contractor Gus Martin, her first love, now widower and devoted father of 7-year old angel Jake, who wants to match them, and whose still undiagnosed serious medical condition becomes crucial, while waitress Connie Murray fails to snap up Gus.

Wraz z powrotem do Bloomfield w Sydney odżywają dawne uczucia i emocje, musi ona rozliczyć się też z wieloma wspomnieniami. Od lat skłócona jest ze swoją matką, której nie potrafi wybaczyć pewnych wydarzeń sprzed lat. Spotyka też swoją dawną miłość - Gusa Martina (Dale Midkiff), obecnie ojca 6-letniego syna.

Dr. Syd has a good practice in the big city but a bad day when her terminal patient finally passes away. Her surgeon boyfriend, who has been sarcastically nick named "Mr. Personality" and " and "Settle For" by Syd's best friend (Nurse Brenda), takes this opportunity to offer support and destroys it by telling Syd dying is part of life and she'd be a better doctor if she stayed more remote from her patients and, oh, by the way, "can I come over tonight"? He is surprised when she says "not tonight." Brenda tells Syd to get away for a few days and suggests Syd change her mind and go back to her small hometown for her school reunion. Brenda points out that since Syd hasn't been back since her father's funeral, she'll be the star of the reunion as a successful doctor who wears the same size as she did in high school. Since Syd hasn't talked to anyone in that village, not even her mother, in years, Syd is unprepared for the collision between her memories of the past and the truth she finds in the village of today.
A high-school reunion draws back to small town Bloomfield Dr. Syd Ludwick, who left for a city hospital career years ago but isn't happy with her lukewarm colleague-lover there. She grudgingly moves in at the parental home, now a B&B, as there is no other accommodation in town, but still blames ma Helen Ludwick, the town's busybody, for neglecting her dad while dying, which isn't exactly true. Crucially, Sid also meets contractor Gus Martin, her first love, now widower and devoted father of 7-year old angel Jake, who wants to match them, and whose still undiagnosed serious medical condition becomes crucial, while waitress Connie Murray fails to snap up Gus.
