HJ Rose's Handbook of Greek Mythology was first published in 1928, with its sixth edition appearing in 1958. Beginning from the emergence of the world from Chaos and Night, Hard describes the legends of the Children of Kronos, and the mythological beings that populated Greek consciousness - Harpies, Gorgons, Geryon and Echidna. From the war with the Titans, the narrative proceeds to the rule of the Olympian Gods, from their war withthe Giants to their interventions in the legends of the heroes. The division of land and consolidation of territory that created the Greek polis also divided sacred from productive space, sharpened distinctions between purity and pollution, and created a ritual system premised on gender difference. Regional sanctuaries ameliorated competition between city-states, publicized the results of competitive rituals for males, and encouraged judicial alternatives to violence. Female ritual efforts, focused on reproduction and the health of the family, are less visible, but, as this provocative study shows, no less significant. Taking a fresh look at the epigraphical evidence for Greek ritual practice in the context of recent studies of landscape and political organization, Susan Guettel Cole illuminates the profoundly gendered nature of Greek cult practice and explains the connections between female rituals and the integrity of the community. Among Alexander's successors, Lysimachus is the forgotten man; when he is recalled it is usually as brutal oppressor of the Greeks, or conversely, as a mediocre little man spurred into action only late in life by a domineering woman. As the first full-length study of Lysimachus in the English language, this book aims to reassess Lysimachus' achievements, which although ephemeral, foreshadowed the growth of the Pergamene and Byzantine empires. Helen Lund sets Lysimachus' actions against the background of the early Hellenistic world, marked by extreme political instability and constant warfare, but also by great developments in city building, portraiture and numismatics. Lysimachus' practice in warfare, kingship, and government is compared and contrasted with that of his contemporaries, his predecessors, and his successors in order to set his achievements in the context of a continuum of imperial rule in Asia Minor. The evidence for Lysimachus's rule is set in its literary, political and social context. Covering Lysimachus's rise from governor of the obscure satrapy of Thrace to ruler of a vast Hellespont-centered kingdom, this book analyzes his skills as warrior and diplomat, and examines the factors which motivated him at each stage of his career. Helen Lund discusses images of Lysimachus in literature, his contribution to early Hellenistic kingship ritual and royal propaganda, offering a completely fresh approach to the dynastic struggle which ended his career. Alexander the Great's empire stretched across three continents and his achievements changed the nature of the ancient world. Alexander's arrogance was largely responsible for his own premature death and he was personally culpable for the failure of his imperial enterprise. For the good of his people, Alexander needed an adult successor, but he refused to provide one while also killing any man who could be seen as one. The consequence was fifty years of warfare after his death and the destruction of his empire. The work of Philip II, Alexander's father, in extending and developing the kingdom of the Macedonians was the foundation for Alexander's career of conquest. Philip's murder in 336 BC brought Alexander to the kingship in the first undisputed royal succession on record.

The conspicuous Temple of Hephaistos, Greek god of metalworkers, prominently situated on the western side of the Agora, reflects the esteem in which bronzeworkers were held by the Athenians. Although many of the objects these craftsmen produced have now been melted down, the statues, lamps, and vessels that remain testify to the high standards of their craftsmanship. As well as illustrating some of the surviving finished products, the author discusses the techniques used to cast bronze and the level of skill involved in producing complex metal statuary.
