Forward, Or Why One Would Write Such A Book
The increase in serious interest in the era of Charles XII in the last few years is due in large part to the books of Peter Englund and Alf Åberg. On the other hand, for those who wish to study the uniforms of the period in greater depth, the offerings are somewhat limited. The recommended works in Swedish are first and foremost Bellander's, "Dräkt och uniform", Åberg and Göransson's, "Karoliner, and Gripenberg's, "Finsk Krigsmannabeklädnad. However, these only deal with the Swedish and Finnish indelta regiments, as well as the Livgardet and Artillery. The värvade units in the German provinces are described in two excellent volumes by Georg Tessin, "Die Deutschen Regimenter der Krone Schweden; however, all of the his uniform information is not correct. In the last couple of years a number of English and American booklets on the Swedish Army in the Great Northern War have appeared. Unfortunately, they all have the same things in common. They are carelessly produced and full of errors. Finally, uniform information is lacking on the garrison units in Sweden and the Baltic, as well as information on all of the temporary and värvade regiments raised during the war, except perhaps for a footnote in some regimental history. A large part of earlier published information now appears to be unsupported by the facts which one finds in the General Muster Rolls for the specific units. For the benefit of those who are interested in uniforms, in particular those brave souls who paint military miniatures, I have been encouraged to publish my notes. This I do with a certain hesitation. Seen from the economic and technocratic perspective of our stress filled age with its blind demand for effectiveness and profitability, such a book as this is in all honesty unjustified. On the other hand, it has been extremely satisfying to have written it. One thing or another in the book is in direct opposition to earlier published information and traditional views. I take this risk. People who do such research are not to be trifled with. Nevertheless, as far as I have be able to interpret the muster rolls, accounts, reports, orders and other documents, my uniform information is reliable. In questionable cases, it is at least highly probable. I hope readers profit from what I have produced. I would also like to thank Sören Henriksen of Roskilde in Denmark and Marc Grieves who has done the beautiful illustrations, together with Leif Törnquist , Anders Thornström of the Krigsarkivet and Jean Claesson who have contributed some valuable uniform information, and last, but not the least; my warmest thanks to Dan Schorr of Harrison, Maine, who have done a superb and very fluent translation of my book into English!

In recent years, the idea that Britain experienced an industrial revolution has been widely questioned. The new economic history, with its emphasis on quantitative techniques and macro-economic indices, has tended to regard Britain's transformation as a gradual and modest affair which does not deserve the term "revolution." The Industrial Revolution and the Atlantic Economy takes issue with this revisionism. Brinley Thomas argues that a change in technology enabled Britain to overcome the energy crisis and to sustain dramatic population growth at an increasing standard of living. This epoch- making change in the energy base was brought about by substituting fossil fuels for organic materials, thereby ushering in the modern age of coal, iron and petroleum.

The Culture of English Antislavery addresses the recent lively international debate about the relation of antislavery in Britain to the deep changes of the period of the Industrial Revolution. It offers an account of the overall shape of organized antislavery from its beginnings in the 1780s, and provides fresh perspectives from which to assess opposing interpretations of antislavery. The evolution of antislavery is portrayed as a series of changing alliances of different and sometimes conflicting religious traditions. The successive alliances of abolitionists are analyzed through the concept of a culture of reform embracing ideology, organizational and propaganda forms, and the more intimate connections and rituals which reformers used to reinforce their identity and solidarity. The result is a definition of the middle class "reform mentality" which linked the antislavery work of reformers to social improvement and to campaigns for transatlantic reform.David Turley's argument is supported in short narratives about reform in different communities at different times. In his conclusion, he relates the various elements of the antislavery coalitions to early Chartism and the popular radicalism of the 1790s.

In this study of the largest population of free and slave Africans in the New World, Herman L. Bennett has uncovered much new information about the lives of slave and free blacks, the ways that their lives were regulated by the government and the Church, the impact upon them of the Inquisition, their legal status in marriage, and their rights and obligations as Christian subjects.

For sixty years, from 1260-1323, the Mamluk state in Egypt and Syria was at war with the Ilkhanid Mongols based in Persia. This is the first comprehensive study of the political and military aspects of the early years of the war, from the battle of Ayn Jalut in 1260 to the battle of Homs in 1281. Between these campaigns, both sides were engaged in various types of psychological warfare. Here, as in the major battles, the Mamluks usually gained the upper hand, establishing themselves as the most important Muslim power at the time.

- Original study of political and military aspects of Mamluk-Ilkhanid wars
- Persian and Arabic sources used for the first time
- A very readable account by a scholar who is well known in the field

In 1951, an Egyptian archaeologist by the name of Zakaria Goneim found the unfinished pyramid of Djoser's successor, Sekhemkhet, to the southwest of the Djoser pyramid.

Only the first step of the pyramid rising to around seven metres was completed before the pharaoh's death. Nonetheless, Goneim found evidence that the pyramid had been used as a burial chamber and had not been disturbed for over 4,000 years.

Experts believe that, if completed, the pyramid would have a larger and more ambitious version of the Djoser Pyramid. The similarities in design to the early pyramid and graffiti found at the site indicate that Imhotep was also responsible for Sekhemkhet's tomb.

Muhammed Zakaria Goneim was an Egyptian archaeologist, known for his discoveries in and around Saqqara. He is best known for discovering the Step pyramid of Sekhemkhet.

In this broad-ranging survey of Paris, Tahiti, Indochina, Japan, New Caledonia, and the South Pacific generally, Matt Matsuda illustrates the fascinating interplay that shaped the imaginations of both colonizer and colonized.

Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, Matsuda describes the constitution of a "French Pacific" through the eyes of Tahitian monarchs, Kanak warriors, French politicos and prisoners, Asian revolutionaries and Central American laborers, among others.

Author argues that French imperialism in the Pacific, both real and imagined, was registered most forcefully in languages of desire and love --for lost islands, promised wealth and riches, carnal and spiritual pleasures-- and political affinities.
Exploring the conflicting engagements with love for and against the empire in the Pacific, this book is an imaginative and ground-breaking work in global imperial and colonial histories, as well as Pacific histories.

Archaeometry is the application of scientific methods and analyses to the study of culture in its archaeological context. Garnered from a conference called to study the material culture from North and South America, the book's twenty essays on a broad range of subjects represent the full scope of study in this field. They include papers by Ron L. Bishop on the compositional analysis of pre-Columbian pottery from the Maya region, Heather Lechtman on the materials science of material culture from the Andes, and J. Michael Elam and others on source identification and hydration dating of obsidian artifacts.

Beautifully illustrated from the work of pioneer war photographers, this is a marvellously readable account of the British Empire at war. From the British invasion of Egypt to the tragedy of Gordon of Khartoum, it culminates in General Kitchener's march to Omdurmann that saw Winston Churchill participate in one of the last battlefield charges by British cavalry. Michael Barthorp reveals the strengths and weaknesses of Queen Victoria's army, its brilliant but wayward officer corps and the professional soldiers who inspired so many Kipling poems.

Celtic mythology is a mystery even to the experts. Trying to sort out what is purely Celtic and what has been altered by the Greeks, Romans, and Christians is an impossible task. Trying to reconcile written records with archeological evidence is difficult if not impossible. The reader is then left with a jumble of names, stories, traditions, and places under the rubric "Celtic mythology."

This latest attempt to bring order out of chaos is an encyclopedia of approximately 1,000 entries covering individuals both mythological and quasi-historical, epics, themes, religious concepts, places, and artifacts. Irish mythology predominates, but continental Celtic figures, even those who are only a name in a local region, such as Britovius, are included.

Organized alphabetically, the entries range in size from several sentences to more than a page. Many end with a short list of sources. The work concludes with a seven-page bibliography and an index with major entries in boldface. An introduction explains Celtic history and culture and describes how the author has handled the entries, especially in regard to spelling.

Other dictionaries and encyclopedias have tackled this topic. An Encyclopedia of Celtic Mythology (Contemporary, 2000) uses a thematic approach, with chapters on druids, fairies, etc. Dictionary of Celtic Mythology (ABC-CLIO, 1992) uses alphabetical entries and has a bibliography but does not include sources with each entry. Another volume, Dictionary of Celtic Myth and Legend (Thames and Hudson, 1992), has 400 entries. The Encyclopedia of Celtic Mythology and Folklore has more entries and provides sources for many of them. In libraries with a high demand for or interest in Celtic mythology, this would be a worthwhile purchase. For libraries with moderate interest that already own one of the earlier encyclopedias or dictionaries, this would be an optional purchase. RBB

The First World War mangled faces, blew away limbs, and ruined nerves. Ten million dead, twenty million severe casualties, and eight million people with permanent disabilities--modern war inflicted pain and suffering with unsparing, mechanical efficiency. However, such horror was not the entire story. People also rebuilt their lives, their communities, and their bodies. From the ashes of war rose beauty, eroticism, and the promise of utopia.

Ana Carden-Coyne investigates the cultures of resilience and the institutions of reconstruction in Britain, Australia, and the United States. Immersed in efforts to heal the consequences of violence and triumph over adversity, reconstruction inspired politicians, professionals, and individuals to transform themselves and their societies.

Bodies were not to remain locked away as tortured memories. Instead, they became the subjects of outspoken debate, the objects of rehabilitation, and commodities of desire in global industries. Governments, physicians, beauty and body therapists, monument designers and visual artists looked to classicism and modernism as the tools for rebuilding civilization and its citizens. What better response to loss of life, limb, and mind than a body reconstructed?

Christopher Lawrence's critical overview of medicine's place in the development of modern Britain examines the significance of the clinical encounter in contemporary society. Medicine in the Making of Modern Britain, the first short synoptic study of its kind, breaks new ground by bringing together specialized scholarship into a broad argument. Lawrence shows how the medical profession created a very specific role for itself and relates this role to the general social policy of the times. Medicine in the Making of Modern Britain will be of interest to a broad audience in a variety of disciplines.
