Barbara C. Bigelow - World War II, Primary Sources (1999).jpg

Presents fifteen excerpts from primary sources related to World War II, including speeches, diary entries, newspaper accounts, novels, poems, and memoirs.
Between 1939 and 1945 a war was fought among all the major powers of the world. It was a war that affected a vast percentage of the world’s population. More people died during World War II than had died in any previous war. From the soldiers on the front lines to the citizens on the home front, World War II: Primary Sources tells the story of the war in the words of the people who lived it.
While all aspects of a war of this scale could not be covered completely in one volume, every effort has been made to offer a variety of World War II experiences. Sixteen full or excerpted documents include speeches from world leaders, such as Winston Churchill’s “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat” speech and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Day of Infamy” speech. The soldiers’ view of the war is presented in excerpts from such works as Stephen Ambrose’s Citizen Soldiers and Ernie Pyle’s dispatches from the front lines of the war, while such pieces as Since You Went Away: World War II Letters from American Women on the Home Front and The Hiroshima Maidens: A Story of Courage, Compassion, and Survival relate civilians’ war experiences.
Primary Sources allows your students to study 35 full or excerpted speeches, diary entries, newspaper accounts, novels, poems, memoirs and other materials related to the war. Excerpts are grouped together in broad subject categories so students can compare and contrast various viewpoints. Special features include: "Things to Remember While Reading, " "What Happened Next, " "Report Topics, " "Did You Know, " definitions of terms approximately 60 photographs and much, much more.

Michael A. Malpass - Daily Life in the Inca Empire (1996).jpeg

Up to now, little has been known about the life of the ordinary Inca during the Inca empire--earlier works describe only the culture of the ruling class. Based on the most recent scholarship, this book reconstructs the daily life not only of the ruling class but of the rest of society, including the conquered peoples, and features contrasting chapters on "a day in the life" of an Inca family and "a day in the life" of a conquered family. Over 50 illustrations and photographs of Inca life, artifacts, and archaeological sites bring the social, political, economic, religious, and cultural aspects of Inca civilization to life. Everything from life cycle events to food and drink, dress and ornaments, recreation, religious rituals, the calendar, and the unique Inca form of taxation are fully described and illustrated in the most comprehensive coverage of the Inca way of life to date.

Michael Woods, Mary B. Woods - The Tomb of King Tu tankhamen (2007).jpg

A royal treasure buried for 3,000 years ... On November 4, 1922, a British archaeologist named Howard Carter unearthed a buried staircase in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. At the bottom of the staircase was a door bearing the name Tutankhamen. That door led Carter to rooms filled with gold treasures and ancient statues. And deep in the tomb lay the mummy of a king, covered in jewels and sealed in a golden coffin. Carter's discovery was the first time someone had found the undisturbed burial chamber of an Egyptian ruler. That King Tutankhamen--who began his reign about 1334 B.C.--had died very young of unknown causes made the discovery even more intriguing. Soon Tut's tomb became famous around the world. People marveled at the gold treasures, the beautiful wall paintings, and the mysterious mummy. They grew fascinated by Egyptian history and culture. By unearthing this treasure from an ancient world, Carter helped people understand what a great civilization ancient Egypt had been.

Douglas Austin - Malta and British Strategic Polic y, 1925-1943 (2004).jpg

This book is a major reassessment of a key aspect of British strategy and defence policy in the first half of the twentieth century. . Its main theme is an investigation of the role of Malta in British military strategy, as planned and as it actually developed, in the period between the mid-1920s and the end of the war in North Africa in May 1943. It demonstrates that the now widely accepted belief that Malta was 'written off as indefensible' before the war was mistaken, and focuses on Malta's actual wartime role in the Mediterranean war. Assessing the numerous advantages, many often ignored, that the British derived from retention of the island. The conclusions made challenge recent assertions that Malta's contribution was of limited value.

Metin Heper - Historical Dictionary of Turkey (200 9).jpg

Turks have been on the world stage for more than a millennium. They ruled the Ottoman Empire--one of the world's largest. They were engaged in extensive Westernization. Today, although it is a Muslim country, for some nearby countries Turkey is a leader and a role model, offering a secular, democratic, and modernist alternative to the fundamentalism preached in Iran and elsewhere. After all, despite difficulties and setbacks, Turkey has developed a working party system, and it boasts important assets, including a large but productive population, a strong military, and an exceptional strategic location where Europe, Africa, and Asia meet. Heper traces a large part of this story, the moments of glory as well as those of decline. He begins with the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the thirteenth century and concludes with the present day, covering many significant persins, places, and events as well as important aspects of the economy, politics, culture, and society. A complete bibliography directs interested readers to more specialized sources.

Stewart Lone - Daily Lives of Civilians in Wartime Asia, From the Taiping Rebellion to the Vietnam W ar (2007).jpg

All History - Stewart Lone - Daily Lives of Civilians in Wartime As...a, From the Taiping Rebellion to the Vietnam War 2007.jpg

In this detailed account of civilian lives during wartime in Asia, high school students, undergrads, and general readers alike can get a glimpse into the often dismal, but surprisingly resilient, lives led by ordinary people-those who did not go off to war but were powerfully affected by it nonetheless. How did people live on a day-to-day basis with the cruelty and horror of war right outside their doorsteps? What were the reactions and views of those who did not fight on the fields? How did people come together to cope with the losses of loved ones and the sacrifices they had to make on a daily basis? This volume contains accounts from the resilient civilians who lived in Asia during the Taiping and Nian Rebellions, the Philippine Revolution, the Wars of Meiji Japan, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
This volume begins with R.G. Tiedemann's account of life in China in the mid-nineteenth century, during the Taiping and Nian Rebellions. Tiedemann examines social practices imposed on the civilians by the Taiping, life in the cities and country, women, and the militarization of society. Bernardita Reyes Churchill examines how civilians in the Philippines struggled for freedom under the imperial reign Spain and the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. Stewart Lone looks at how Meiji Japan's wars on the Asian continent affected the lives and routines of men, women, and children, urban and rural. He also explains how the media played a role during the wars, as well as how people were able to spend leisure time and even make wartime humor. Di Wang uses the public space of the teahouse and its culture as a microcosm of daily life in China during tumultuous years of civil and world war, 1937-1949. Simon Partner explores Japanese daily life during World War II, investigating youth culture, the ways people came together, and how the government took control of their lives by rationing food, clothing, and other resources. Shigeru Sato continues by examining the harshness of life in Indonesia during World War II and its aftermath. Korean life from 1950-1953 is looked at by Andrei Lankov, who takes a look at the heart-rending lives of refugees. Finally, Lone surveys life in South Vietnam from 1965-1975, from school children to youth protests to how propaganda affected civilians. This volume offers students and general readers a glimpse into the lives of those often forgotten.

Andrew Wheatcroft - The Enemy at the Gate, Habsbur gs, Ottomans, and the Battle for Europe (2009).jpg

In 1683, an Ottoman army that stretched from horizon to horizon set out to seize the “Golden Apple,” as Turks referred to Vienna. The ensuing siege pitted battle-hardened Janissaries wielding seventeenth-century grenades against Habsburg armies, widely feared for their savagery. The walls of Vienna bristled with guns as the besieging Ottoman host launched bombs, fired cannons, and showered the populace with arrows during the battle for Christianity’s bulwark. Each side was sustained by the hatred of its age-old enemy, certain that victory would be won by the grace of God.The Great Siege of Vienna is the centerpiece for historian Andrew Wheatcroft’s richly drawn portrait of the centuries-long rivalry between the Ottoman and Habsburg empires for control of the European continent. A gripping work by a master historian, The Enemy at the Gate offers a timely examination of an epic clash of civilizations.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 412 - Peter Abbott - Ukrainia n Armies 1914-55 (2004).jpg

There can be no region in Europe whose history has been more tortured than Ukraine. During the 20th century Austria, Poland, Russia, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Romania vied for power over parts of this vast and fragmented area; and its divided peoples rose time and again in vain attempts to win their independence. For the first time in the West, this book gives a succinct summary of all the different armed forces raised among the Ukrainians, and of their uniforms and insignia. These are illustrated in colour and in a selection of extremely rare photographs, dating from the Great War to the aftermath of World War II, when Ukrainian guerrillas continued to defy the Soviet authorities until the mid-1950s.

The Ukrainians are the largest of the 'submerged' peoples of Eastern Europe and historically represent the second largest group in the old USSR, after the Russians themselves. Ukrainians faced many different enemies in the late stages of World War I, in the civil wars following it, and in World War II when their support for the Germans was a major factor. This title examines the organisation, uniform and insignia of each Ukrainian force, demonstrating how and why they played such important roles during the World Wars. The text is supported by colour illustrations and rare photographs.

Richard A. Gabriel - The Great Armies of Antiquity (2002).jpg

Gabriel examines 18 ancient army systems, examining the organizational structure and weapons employed and the degree to which cultural values and imperatives shaped the form and application of military force. The tactical doctrines and specific operational capabilities of each army are analyzed to explain how certain technical limitations and societal/cultural imperatives affected the operational capabilities of ancient armies. Cross-cultural and cross-historical connections ground the analysis in the larger historical context of the ancient world.

A.Kirk Grayson - Assyrian Rulers of Early First Mi llennium BC I (1114-859 B.C.) (1991).jpg

The ancient kings of Mesopotamia ruled one of the two great literate civilizations that set the course of the earliest history of the ancient Near East. Their temples and tombs do not waken vivid images in the minds of the modern reader or television viewer, as do those of the other great centre of early Near Eastern civilization, Egypt. But their cities, some with such familiar names as Babylon, Nineveh, and Ur, have been excavated over the past century and a half, according to the standards of the time, and have yielded an abundance of records of the boasted accomplishments of these kings. These are the Royal In-scriptions of Mesopotamia, mostly telling of building projects and battles, all done ad maiorem gloriam deorum.
The inscriptions, in a cuneiform script, are found on objects of various kinds including tablets, prisms, and vases of clay or steles, doorpost sockets, and sculpted wall panels of stone. Inscribed bricks are very common. A tiny cylinder seal, often known only from its impression on a clay tablet, or an engraved gem may give the name and titles of a king.
The languages are Sumerian and Akkadian, the latter usually in its Babylonian dialect but with varying admixtures of the Assyrian dialect in documents from the north, in the region around modern Mosul.
The objects on which the inscriptions are found are now for the most part scattered around the world in various museums, although inscriptions cut on the face of rocks or on stone building blocks are often still in situ.
The principal museums with collections of these kinds of antiquities are in Baghdad, Istanbul, Berlin, Paris, London, Philadelphia, and Chicago. The dispersal of the inscribed objects around the world makes their systematic study difficult, and the difficulty is compounded by the practical in-accessibility of many of the journals and monographs in which studies of the inscriptions have been pub-lished over the past century and more.
The purpose of the Royal Inscriptions of Mesopotamia Project is to make these texts available to lay-man and specialist alike by publishing standard editions, with English translations, in a series of volumes.
To carry out this purpose an international editorial board has been formed and a staff of researchers and support staff assembled.
This process began in the late 1970s with funding from the University of Toronto.
In 1981 the Project was awarded full funding by the Negotiated Grants Section of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
