The archaeological remains of a remarkably well-preserved indigenous Maori village are unearthed and analyzed in this collection of contributions from 20 scholars who worked at the excavation site. Abandoned because of flooding, the village of Te Kohika remained untouched for 270 years and preserved in a peat swamp until it was discovered in 1974. For the past 30 years, archaeologists have been researching the pataka storehouses, cooking shelters, homes, wood and fiber items, and storage pits at the site, making this one of the largest ongoing archaeological projects in New Zealand's history. Each essay offers an expert's opinion on the artifacts discovered and cultural observations disclosed by this landmark excavation.

This title examines in a comprehensive way the critically formative period when a culturally coherent geopolitical region identifiable as East Asia first took shape. By sifting through an array of both primary material and modern interpretations, Charles Holcombe unravels what "East Asia" means, and why. He brings to bear archaeological, textual, and linguistic evidence to elucidate how the region developed through mutual stimulation and consolidation from its highly plural origins into what we now think of as the nation-states of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Beginning with the Qin dynasty conquest of 221 BC which brought large portions of what are now Korea and Vietnam within China's frontiers, the book goes on to examine the period of intense interaction that followed with the many scattered local tribal cultures then under China's imperial sway as well as across its borders. Even the distant Japanese islands could not escape being profoundly transformed by developments on the mainland. Eventually, under the looming shadow of the Chinese empire, independent native states and civilizations matured for the first time in both Japan and Korea, and one frontier region, later known as Vietnam, moved toward independence.

Retired business executive Vincent follows a long and successful tradition of British writers who are neither academicians nor professionals with this comprehensive biography. Making extensive use of archival and published sources, Vincent provides a perceptive, empathetic analysis of a man who throughout his life focused talent and energy on the pursuit of ambition and self-presentation. Vincent's Nelson did not just seek love and fame; he equated them. At the age of 18 he consciously decided to be a hero, and his strong point remained self-confidence. Nelson increasingly identified his personal interests with the public welfare. He was prone to histrionics and inordinately fond of the first person singular. Yet at the same time he incorporated, to a degree unusual for military officers at any period, the virtues of communication, negotiation and collaboration. Vincent makes the telling point that, far from being the rule-breaking innovator of many accounts, Nelson was an organization man and a skilled player of navy politics, able to mobilize support for even his high-risk operations. He cultivated a charismatic personality to win the hearts and minds of his fellow officers, eventually succeeding in welding a group of standoffish, individualistic captains into a "band of brothers." Initially unsuccessful with women, Nelson was fortunate in his eventual relationship with Emma Hamilton. Far from being the embarrassing encumbrance of some saltier biographies, she emerges here as meeting Nelson's need for unconditional acceptance in a way that freed his formidable powers to concentrate fully on the professional achievements that earned him immortality-ironically, at the expense of his loved ones' welfare and well-being. Vincent's Nelson, for good and ill, would have made the same choice consciously, without hesitation.

Between the late Tenth and the mid Thirteenth centuries Portugal emerged as an independent kingdom with borders that have remained largely unchanged until the present day. This political development took place against the backdrop of a struggle between Christendom and the Islamic world for control over the Iberian Peninsula, but also decisive in the formation of Portugal was a growing European influence being felt throughout the peninsula during these centuries. This cultural influence took the form of direct immigration, growing commercial and social networks, and the transfer of ideas and social mores. Portuguese rulers sought to mediate this European influence to their own advantage. In the twelfth century Afonso Henriques (1128-1185) was able to establish the Portuguese monarchy, but his heirs Sancho I (1185-1211), Afonso II (1211-1223) and Sancho II (1223-1245), found the balance between Iberian reality and European expectation increasingly difficult to maintain.

Robert Hunter's Egypt Under the Khedives, brought back into print in this paperback edition, was a pioneering work when first published in the 1980s, as Western scholars began to comb Egypt's national archives for an understanding of the social and economic history of the country. It is now recognized as one of the fundamental books on nineteenth-century Egypt: it is so archivally based and empirically solid that it forms the starting-point for all research.
Hunter used land and pension records in Dar al-Mahfuzat, in addition to published archival collections like those of Amin Sami Pasha, to enlarge our understanding of the social dimensions of the politics of the period. A secondary and very important contribution of the work is its explanation of the way in which "collaborating bureaucrat-landowners" aided in the country's subordination to European political and economic dominance in the reign of Ismail. The big chapter on the unraveling of khedivial absolutism is a splendid piece of storytelling, as it explores the wild fluctuations in Egypt's finances, Ismail's desperate gambits to ward off European administrative scrutiny, and the defection of key officials in his regime to the European side.

While scholarship has traditionally viewed Mehmed Ali Pasha as the founder of modern Egypt, Khaled Fahmy offers a new interpretation of his role in the rise of Egyptian nationalism, firmly locating him within the Ottoman context as an ambitious, if problematic, Ottoman reformer. Basing his work on previously neglected archival material, the author demonstrates how Mehmed Ali sought to develop the Egyptian economy and to build up the army, not as a means of gaining Egyptian independence from the Ottoman empire, but to further his own ambitions for recognized hereditary rule over the province. By focusing on the army and the soldier's daily experiences, the author constructs a detailed picture of attempts at modernization and reform, how they were planned and implemented by various reformers, and how the public at large understood and accommodated them. In this way, the work contributes to the larger methodological and theoretical debates concerning nation-building and the construction of state power in the particular context of early nineteenth-century Egypt.
