Christopher Smith - Late Stone Age Hunters of the British Isles (1992).jpg

Late Stone Age Hunters of the British Isles places archaeological evidence for the Late Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods--comprised of stone tools and animal bones--within a wider, ecological context. The book examines how information about the hunter-gatherer way of life can be derived from archaeological evidence.

Hansgeorg Jentschura, Dieter Jung, Peter Mickel - Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945 ( 1986).jpg

All History1 - Hansgeorg Jentschura, Dieter Jung, Peter Mickel - Wa...arships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945 1986.jpg

The origin of this book, and the gathering of material to he used for it, goes back over thirty years. The idea was that of Erich Grdner, historian of the German navy, and author of Die Deutschen Kriegschiffe, I HI5-1945, (Lehmanns, Munich).
In October 1942, thanks to a special request by Hitler, the German Naval Attache in Tokyo, Admiral Wenneker, was permitted to pay a short visit of inspection to a Yamalo class "super-dreadnought" in a dockyard, and then to cable a very detailed description of the ship to Berlin. On 22nd August 1943, Grdner was shown this report at the Fiihrer HQ for the purpose of interpretation and preparation of a design sketch drawing, under security supervision. Later, at the time of the collapse of the Third Reich, he rescued a copy of this sketch intending to use it as the frontispiece in a volume on Japanese warships. And after the war, hoping to put his plan into practice, Grdner embarked on an enthusiastic exchange of material with Shizuo Fukui, a Japanese naval constructor who planned similar publications in Japan.
Following Grdner's death, we decided to follow up the project. As Peter Mickel had already drawn a large number of plans of Japanese warships and discussed them with Grdner, continuity in this respect seemed assured. In the completion of this enormous task, he was later joined by F. Mrva. to whom special thanks are due for his utterly reliable assistance.
The task of preparing the text was undertaken by Hansgeorg Jentschura and Dieter Jung in the face of considerable difficulties. Original documents were not available for research, enquiries could not be made of individuals involved and no visits could be made to builders. Particular attention was paid to problems arising from varying transcriptions of Japanese characters — and which have led to the appearance in many publications of "phantom" ships. We give our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wolfram Miiller-Yokota of the University of Bochum for his help in clarifying these anomalies.

George Nafziger - Imperial Bayonets, Tactics of th e Napoleonic Battery, Battalion and Brigade As Fou nd in Contemporary Regulations (1996).jpg

All History1 - George Nafziger - Imperial Bayonets, Tactics of the ...nd Brigade As Found in Contemporary Regulations 1996.jpg

George Nafziger has written an excellent reference book that highlights the drill regulations of the various nations that fought in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It is well-researched, thorough, and is an indispensable reference for historians, enthusiasts, wargamers, and those that just like to play with their toy and model soldiers, or enjoy making model dioramas and vignettes.
Profusely illustrated with clear and concise diagrams of the various formations and maneuvers, the author skillfully leads the reader through the various evolutions troops would use on the battlefield. One that was particularly useful for me was seeing how the difficult passage of lines was done, which is one of the maneuvers Marshal Lannes executed at Jena under fire, which was no mean effort, being one of the hardest to execute, especially in the middle of a hard fight.
The bibliography is complete and very helpful, and this is a handy reference that needs to be at your side as you make your way through the various histories of the period.
This book is much more accurate and useful than Brent Nosworthy's With Musket, Cannon, and Sword, and the author is much more at home with his subject, and better versed in it than Mr. Nosworthy.
Faults and/or errors are few and far between. One minor annoyance was the author's tendency to use the term 'converged' instead of either 'provisional' or 'composite' for temporary units used either for a certain amount of time, or those utilized for a special mission, such as making a provisional battalion out of the grenadier companies of several battalions and/or regiments. 'Converged' is not a military term , while 'provisional' and 'composite' are. One suspects 'converged' is a wargaming term that has evolved through that particular genre.
This very important work is vital for understanding the drill and maneuvers on the tactical level for the armies of the period described. It is a must for historians and enthusiasts, and belongs on every Napoleonic buff's bookshelf.

Steven Patterson - The Cult of Imperial Honor in B ritish India (2009).jpg

What was imperial honor and how did it sustain the British Raj? If “No man may harm me with impunity” was an ancient theme of the European aristocracy, British imperialists of almost all classes in India possessed a similar vision of themselves as overlords belonging to an honorable race, so that ideals of honor condoned and sanctified their rituals, connecting them with status, power, and authority. Honor, most broadly, legitimated imperial rule, since imperialists ostensibly kept India safe from outside threats. Yet at the individual level, honor kept the “white herd” together, providing the protocols and etiquette for the imperialist, who had to conform to the strict notions of proper and improper behavior in a society that was always obsessed with maintaining its dominance over India and Indians. Examining imperial society through the prism of honor therefore opens up a new methodology for the study of British India.

The clash between German Social Democracy--the party, intellectuals and workers--and the German Imperial State was played out in the Freie Volksbahne (Free People's Theatre) founded by intellectuals to energise working class political awareness of drama with a political and social cutting edge. It fell foul of state censorship, lost its bite, yet prospered.

This book considers how all historians, confined by the concepts and forms of argument of their own cultures, can still discover truths about the past. The Truth of History presents a study of various historical explanations and interpretations and evaluates their success as accounts of the past. The Truth of History questions how modern historians, confined by the concepts of their own cultures, can still discover truths about the past.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 456 - Ronald Pawly - Mounted Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard (2009).jpg

Mounted upon their huge black horses, the Mounted Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard were the senior heavy cavalry unit of the French army and were never defeated in battle. Their long list of battle honours earned them the nicknames ‘the Giants’ and ‘the Gods’. In this latest addition to the Osprey mini-series on the Imperial Guard, author Ronald Pawly tells the story of this famous unit using unparalleled documentary and pictorial sources. Along with detailed artwork depicting the unit’s colourful uniforms, this book gives a history of the unit’s organization and record drawn from original letters, orders, and inspection reports that still survive in the Paris Archives. Interspersed are the stories of some of the individuals that served in the Mounted Grenadiers and helped to make it one of the most storied units to have served in Napoleon’s army.

Charles Phillips, Alan Axelrod - Encyclopedia Of H istorical Treaties And Alliance (2005).jpg

"Encyclopedia of Historical Treaties and Alliances, Second Edition" presents extensive excerpts from the treaties of more than 420 international agreements in an elegantly accessible format. Divided into chronological chapters ranging from ancient Mesopotamia to the present, each chapter begins with a summary of the important trends and events in international relations of the era. Entries on specific agreements follow, with each containing the date of the document's signing, a list of signatory nations, the leading negotiators, and key terms. A narrative discussion outlines the historical context, identifies the essential positions of the signatories, and summarizes the document's significance. In addition to treaties that concluded wars, the book includes treaties on the environment, armaments, trade, human rights, scientific exploration, and many other concerns. The new edition of Encyclopedia of Historical Treaties and Alliances includes 20 new multilateral treaties and conventions, taking into account the transition in the orientation of U.S. foreign policy that was ushered in with the administration of George W. Bush. A new chapter called "International Threats, Global Opportunities" begins with a thematic and historical overview followed by nine new treaties. In addition, sources for all treaty documents have been added, making it easy to cite information. Accessible to all audiences, this up-to-date encyclopedia gives students, researchers, and teachers a clear idea of the changing political conditions throughout history.

Christopher W. Close - The Negotiated Reformation, Imperial Cities and the Politics of Urban Reform, 1525-1550 (2009).jpg

All History1 - Christopher W. Close - The Negotiated Reformation, I...ies and the Politics of Urban Reform, 1525-1550 2009.jpg

Utilizing evidence from numerous imperial cities, this book offers a new explanation for the spread and survival of urban reform during the sixteenth century. By analyzing the operation of regional political constellations, it reveals a common process of negotiation that shaped the Reformation in the Holy Roman Empire. It reevaluates traditional models of reform that leave unexplored the religious implications of flexible systems of communication and support among cities. Such networks influenced urban reform in fundamental ways, affecting how Protestant preachers moved from city to city, as well as what versions of the Reformation city councils introduced. This fusion of religion and politics meant that with local variations, negotiation within a regional framework sat at the heart of urban reform. The Negotiated Reformation therefore explains not only how the Reformation spread to almost every imperial city in southern Germany, but also how it survived imperial attempts to repress religious reform.

This new collection of essays, from leading British and Canadian scholars, presents an excellent insight into the strategic thinking of the British Empire. It defines the main areas of the strategic decision-making process that was known as 'Imperial Defence'. The theme is one of imperial defence and defence of empire, so chapters will be historiographical in nature, discussing the major features of each key component of imperial defence, areas of agreement and disagreement in the existing literature on critical interpretations, introducing key individuals and positions and commenting on the appropriateness of existing studies, as well as identifying a raft of new directions for future research.

Leslie P. Peirce - The Imperial Harem, Women and S overeignty in the Ottoman Empire (1993).jpg

"The harem described in Leslie P. Peirce's fascinating book is not the lascivious sexual playground conceived by the Western imagination but the locus of power in the Ottoman empire...The general thesis of this outstanding book--that the power wielded by the women of the imperial harem was real, and that it stood in an organic relation to broader Ottoman political traditions and practice--will be widely accepted."--American Historical Review
"Peirce's work effectively reinforces recent work on the post-Suleymanic period, while at the same time revising scholarship about the imperial harem and the dynastic family. In doing so, her book is a significant contribution to the field."--The Historian
"The Imperial Harem is the definitive book on its subject. While it is excellent reading for students of women's studies, it is an important contribution to Ottoman history as well."--MESA Bulletin
"A tour de force. Peirce has brought her detailed knowledge of Ottoman harem politics to revise a fundamental question of Ottoman historiography: how did the dynasty adjust to the transformation of imperial ideology necessary in light of the regime's change from aggressive expansion to stasis."--Carl F. Petry, Northwestern University
"This is an excellent book, and a new departure in women's history within the Islamic field. Peirce discusses women not as a class apart, not as part of dynastic politics in the Ottoman Empire, thus shedding new light on political processes, and showing women to be an integral part of the dynasty."
