"Moral Geography" traces the development of a moral basis for American expansionism, as Protestant missionaries, using biblical language and metaphors, imaginatively conjoined the cultivation of souls with the cultivation of land and made space sacred. While the political implications of the mapping of American expansion have been much studied, this is the first major study of the close and complex relationship between mapping and missionizing on the American frontier. Moral Geography provides a fresh approach to understanding nineteenth-century Protestant home missions in Ohio's Western Reserve. Through the use of maps, letters, religious tracts, travel narratives, and geographical texts, Amy DeRogatis recovers the struggles of settlers, land surveyors, missionaries, and geographers as they sought to reconcile their hopes and expectations for a Promised Land with the realities of life on the early American frontier.

Bruce B. Lawrence - New Faiths, Old Fears; Muslims and Other Asian Immigrants in American Religious Life (2002).jpg

USA Books1 - Bruce B. Lawrence - New Faiths, Old Fears Muslims and ...ther Asian Immigrants in American Religious Life 2002.jpg

As a result of immigration from Asia since the passage of the 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act, the fastest-growing religions in America -faster than all Christian groups combined -are Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. How have these new faiths changed or been changed by the pluralist face of American civil society? How have these new religious minorities been affected by the deep-rooted American ambivalence toward foreign traditions? Bruce Lawrence casts a comparativist eye on the American religious scene and explores the ways in which the experiences of various groups of Asian immigrants have been similar to and different from one another, and from those of Native, African, and Hispanic Americans.

USA Books1 - United States Army in World War II. The Technical Serv...d - The Corps of Engineers The War Against Japan 1987.jpg

Contributions of the Corps of Engineers to victory in war, and to our country's peacetime history, are well known and appreciated. The skill and versatility of this talented body of soldiers met a supreme test in operations against the Japanese, many of which were conducted in the most primitive and undeveloped regions of the world. Engineers built the Alaska Highway, Canol, and the Ledo Road in Burma. They cleared the jungles to build airfields for heavy bombers and supervised the work of Filipinos, Chinese, and Melanesians as they built runways by hand. They built ports, roads, and docks where none had existed. Indeed, one of the most familiar recollections of the U.S. veteran of the war against Japan is the ubiquitous engineer operating a bulldozer. Dr. Dod's subject is vast and varied, and he has worked hard and capably to fit it into the confines of a single volume. He has made an original contribution to knowledge in the highly technical areas of Engineer problems, organization, equipment, supply, administration, and operations.

USA Books1 - United States Army in World War II. The Technical Serv...- The Corps of Engineers The War Against Germany 1985.jpg

In this, the last volume dealing with the performance of the Corps of Engineers during World War II, the Corps' support of the war in the European and North African theaters is recounted in detail. This narrative makes clear the indispensible role of the military engineer at the fighting front and his part in maintaining Allied armies in the field against European Axis powers. American engineers carried the fight to enemy shores by their mastery of amphibious warfare. In building and repairing road and rail nets for the fighting forces, they wrote their own record of achievement. In supporting combat and logistical forces in distant lands, these technicians of war transferred to active theaters many of the construction and administrative functions of the peacetime Corps, so heavily committed to public works at home. The authors of this volume have reduced a highly complex story to a comprehensive yet concise account of American military engineers in the two theaters of operations where the declared main enemy of the war was brought to unconditional surrender. The addition of this account to the official U.S. Army in World War II series closes the last remaining gaps in the history of the technical services in that conflict.

USA Books1 - United States Army in World War II. The Technical Serv...s of Engineers Construction in the United States 1989.jpg

In World War II the Corps of Engineers superintended the largest construction program in the nation's history, providing the home base for a United States Army that grew to more than eight million men and women. The Corps-related construction work included development of the facilities for making atomic bombs. In telling the story of these herculean efforts the authors set unprecedented standards: no detailed and scholarly history on the subject of construction has ever before been undertaken in this country.

Kevin Hillstrom - Vietnam War; Primary Sources (20 00).jpg

Grade 7 Up-Almanac provides a good overview of the background to, conduct of, and the continuing legacy of the Vietnam War. Chapters are arranged either chronologically or thematically, with clear headings and subheadings. Biographies profiles 60 people from the era, including political and military leaders, journalists, authors, protestors, soldiers, and civilians. Primary Sources, the strongest title of the set, draws on letters, speeches, excerpts from memoirs, and reminiscences from a wide spectrum of participants and leaders. The Hillstroms have incorporated recent scholarship but the real strength here is the inclusion of so many points of view. The books feature captioned black-and-white photos, many of which are among the best known of the era. Sidebars provide additional information, and each chapter, biography, or primary source has a bibliography, a real help for researchers. Although these books will provide students with outstanding report material, they are so well written they could be recommended to general readers. A comprehensive, objective resource.

Christopher Martin Cumo - Science and Technology i n 20th-Century American Life (2007).jpg

The twentieth century witnessed the greatest changes in technology and science that humans have ever witnessed. These occurred rapidly and affected such a broad range of people. Scientists, inventors, and engineers built upon the great inventions of the 19th century to expand the reach of modern technology - for a citizen in 1900, communication, transportation, and agricultural was still primarily local activities; by 2000, an American citizen was part of an interconnected global community. These developments in science and technology were also important in the social and cultural changes of the period. The Great Depression, the World Wars and Cold War, the civil rights and women's rights movements - all were greatly impacted by the rapid scientific and technological advancements in the universities and industry.

Tim Weiner - Legacy of Ashes; The History of the C IA (2008).jpg

Is the Central Intelligence Agency a bulwark of freedom against dangerous foes, or a malevolent conspiracy to spread American imperialism? A little of both, according to this absorbing study, but, the author concludes, it is mainly a reservoir of incompetence and delusions that serves no one's interests well. Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times correspondent Weiner musters extensive archival research and interviews with top-ranking insiders, including former CIA chiefs Richard Helms and Stansfield Turner, to present the agency's saga as an exercise in trying to change the world without bothering to understand it. Hypnotized by covert action and pressured by presidents, the CIA, he claims, wasted its resources fomenting coups, assassinations and insurgencies, rigging foreign elections and bribing political leaders, while its rare successes inspired fiascoes like the Bay of Pigs and the Iran-Contra affair. Meanwhile, Weiner contends, its proper function of gathering accurate intelligence languished. With its operations easily penetrated by enemy spies, the CIA was blind to events in adversarial countries like Russia, Cuba and Iraq and tragically wrong about the crucial developments under its purview, from the Iranian revolution and the fall of communism to the absence of Iraqi WMDs. Many of the misadventures Weiner covers, at times sketchily, are familiar, but his comprehensive survey brings out the persistent problems that plague the agency. The result is a credible and damning indictment of American intelligence policy.

Carol K. Winkler - In The Name Of Terrorism; Presi dents On Political Violence In The Post-world War II Era (2005).jpg

USA Books1 - Carol K. Winkler - In The Name Of Terrorism Presidents... Political Violence In The Post-world War II Era 2005.jpg

The topic of terrorism has evolved into an ideological marker of American culture, one that has fundamentally altered the relationship between the three branches of government, between the government and the people, and between America and countries abroad. In the Name of Terrorism describes and analyzes the public communication strategies presidents have deployed to discuss terrorism since the end of World War II. Drawing upon internal administration documents, memoirs, and public papers, Carol K. Winkler uncovers how presidents have capitalized on public perceptions of the terrorist threat, misrepresented actual terrorist events, and used the term "terrorism" to influence electoral outcomes both at home and abroad. Perhaps more importantly, she explains their motivations for doing so, and critically discusses the moral and political implications of the present range of narratives used to present terrorism to the public.

"Winkler's excellent study shows how presidential rhetoric changes in response to objective events, and the ways that different presidential ideologies shape those events through the kinds of narrative they employ." -- Perspectives on Politics

"Winkler demonstrates how presidents craft effective public appeals--through a process of trial and error, and artistry and deceit--that blend ideological and other political motives with continued adaptation to both the stream of events and the rhetorical environment. After reading this work, one can see how the meaning and rhetorical power of `terrorism' has developed over the past several decades through presidential deployment of the term." -- Robert Hariman, author of Political Style: The Artistry of Power

"Winkler addresses an important topic that could not be more timely.... One can see how the current administration's war on terrorism emerges from and advances the basic trajectory of previous presidential accounts" -- Robert L. Ivie, author of Democracy and America's War on Terror

USA Books1 - Lucien S. Vandenbroucke - Perilous Options, Special...erations as an Instrument of U.S. Foreign Policy 1993.jpg

In the past three decades, the United States government has used special operations repeatedly in an effort to achieve key foreign policy objectives, such as in the overthrow of Fidel Castro in Cuba and the rescuing of American hostages in Iran. Many of these secret missions carried out by highly trained commando forces have failed. In Perilous Options, Lucien Vandenbroucke examines the use and misuse of such special operations through an in-depth analysis of four operations--the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Sontay raid to rescue POWs in North Vietnam, the Mayaguez operation, and the Iran hostage rescue mission.

Annelise Orleck - Storming Caesar's Palace; How Bl ack Mothers Fought Their Own War on Poverty (2006).jpg

In Storming Caesars Palace, historian Annelise Orleck tells the compelling story of how a group of welfare mothers built one of this country's most successful antipoverty programs. Declaring "We can do it and do it better," these women proved that poor mothers are the real experts on poverty. In 1972 they founded Operation Life, which was responsible for many firsts for the poor in Las Vegas—the first library, medical center, daycare center, job training, and senior citizen housing. By the late 1970s, Operation Life was bringing millions of dollars into the community. These women became influential in Washington, DC—respected and listened to by political heavyweights such as Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Ted Kennedy, and Jimmy Carter. Though they lost their funding with the country's move toward conservatism in the 1980s, their struggles and phenomenal triumphs still stand as a critical lesson about what can be achieved when those on welfare chart their own course.
"An up-close and personal account of nine strong-minded African-American women who became welfare-rights activists in Las Vegas . . . A worthy history of the country's changing attitudes toward welfare and the various attempts to eradicate poverty." —Kirkus Reviews
Annelise Orleck is associate professor of history and women's and gender studies at Dartmouth College. She is the author of Common Sense and a Little Fire and Soviet Jewish Americans and coeditor of The Politics of Motherhood. Orleck lives in Thetford Center, Vermont, with her partner and their two children.

William Haltom, Michael McCann - Distorting the La w; Politics, Media, and the Litigation Crisis (200 4).jpg

In recent years, stories of reckless lawyers and greedy citizens have given the legal system, and victims in general, a bad name. Many Americans have come to believe that we live in the land of the litigious, where frivolous lawsuits and absurdly high settlements reign.Scholars have argued for years that this common view of the depraved ruin of our civil legal system is a myth, but their research and statistics rarely make the news. William Haltom and Michael McCann here persuasively show how popularized distorted understandings of tort litigation (or tort tales) have been perpetuated by the mass media and reform proponents. Distorting the Law lays bare how media coverage has sensationalized lawsuits and sympathetically portrayed corporate interests, supporting big business and reinforcing negative stereotypes of law practices.Based on extensive interviews, nearly two decades of newspaper coverage, and in-depth studies of the McDonald's coffee case and tobacco litigation, Distorting the Law offers a compelling analysis of the presumed litigation crisis, the campaign for tort law reform, and the crucial role the media play in this process.

Megan Mullin - Governing the Tap; Special District Governance and the New Local Politics of Water (2 009).jpg

More than ever, Americans rely on independent special districts to provide public services. The special district—which can be as small as a low-budget mosquito abatement district or as vast as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey—has become the most common form of local governance in the United States. In Governing the Tap, Megan Mullin examines the consequences of specialization and the fragmentation of policymaking authority through the lens of local drinking-water policy.Directly comparing specific conservation, land use, and contracting policies enacted by different forms of local government, Mullin investigates the capacity of special districts to engage in responsive and collaborative decision making that promotes sustainable use of water resources. She concludes that the effect of specialization is conditional on the structure of institutions and the severity of the policy problem, with specialization offering the most benefit on policy problems that are least severe.Mullin presents a political theory of specialized governance that is relevant to any of the variety of functions special districts perform. Governing the Tap offers not only the first study of how the new decentralized politics of water is taking shape in American communities, but also new and important findings about the influence of institutional structures on local policymaking.

Charles R. Shrader - History of Operations Researc h in the United States Army, V. 1, 1942-1962 (2006 ).jpg

History of Operations Research in the United States Army, 1942-1962 is the first of three planned volumes, each to cover a different time span, that will eventually be integrated into a single formal volume. Operations research (OR) emerged during World War II as an important means of assisting civilian and military leaders in making scientifically sound improvements in the design and performance of weapons and equipment. OR techniques were soon extended to address questions of tactics and strategy during the war and, after the war, to matters of high-level political and economic policy. Until now, the story of why and how the U.S. Army used OR has remained relatively obscure. This comprehensive history offers important insights into the natural tension between military leaders and civilian scientists, the establishment and growth of Army OR organizations, the use of OR techniques, and the many contributions that OR managers and analysts have made to the growth and improvement of the Army since 1942. The upcoming two volumes will take the story up to modern times. This account should be of interest not only to the Army's analysis community, but also to civilian leaders and military commanders and staff officers at all levels.

Charles R. Shrader - History of Operations Researc h in the United States Army, V. 3, 1973-1995 (2009 ).jpg

The period from 1973 to 1995 was one of the most challenging in the history of the United States Army. In an era of rapidly changing technology, sudden shifts in the threats facing the United States, and the need (particularly toward the end of the period) to operate on “short rations,” Army leaders faced a number of complex and difficult decisions. Their ability to efficiently sort out the alternatives and find an effective solution was due in no small part to the support provided by Army operations research/systems analysis managers and analysts. This, the third and final volume of the history of operations research/systems analysis in the Army from 1942 to1995, covers the momentous events of the last quarter of the twentieth century and attempts to tell the story of when, where, and how the members of the Army analytical community supported Army decision makers and how the Army analytical community itself grew and evolved between 1973 and 1995.
