Originally formed at the turn of the nineteenth century to protect America’s strategic interests in the Caribbean, the 65th Infantry was composed of locally recruited Puerto Rican soldiers led primarily by non-Hispanic “continental” officers. Although in existence for almost fifty years, the 65th had not experienced intense combat until it was committed to the Korean peninsula in the initial months of the war. There, despite its lack of previous wartime service, the regiment did extremely well from September 1950 to August 1951, establishing a solid reputation as a dependable infantry unit and a mainstay of the heavily embattled 3d Infantry Division. After that period, however, its performance began to suffer as experienced cadre rotated out of the regiment and were replaced by new leaders and soldiers who lacked the skills and special cohesive bonds displayed by their predecessors. The net result was a highly publicized series of incidents and disciplinary actions that have never been adequately explained or understood. This study reviews the performance of the 65th Infantry throughout the war, providing insights not only into the regiment’s unique problems but also into the status of the U.S. Army’s combat forces during one of the most trying periods in its history. Its findings underscore the critical impact of personnel-rotation policies, ethnic and organizational prejudices, and the work of small-unit leaders on combat readiness and battlefield success. They also illustrate the critical role of senior leaders in analyzing problems in these areas in a timely fashion and instituting effective reforms. For the 65th, a catastrophic shortage of trained NCOs, unaddressed language problems, and inept command leadership temporarily undermined its combat effectiveness. Making matters worse, senior commanders reacted in a heavy-handed manner with little analysis of what was really going on. In the end, it was the martial traditions of the 65th’s Hispanic soldiers and a host of new leaders willing to address its special problems that pulled the unit through. The regiment’s colors remained in Korea until November 1954, when the unit returned to Puerto Rico. Today, the 1st Battalion of the 65th Infantry remains as part of the Puerto Rican National Guard, a testimony to a unique combat unit that served the United States Army well for over one hundred years. Yet, what has sometimes been called the Forgotten War is still rich in lessons that the Army of today can ill afford to forget if it is to succeed on the battlefields of tomorrow.

USA Books1 - Dale Andrade - Surging south of Baghdad the 3d Infantr... Division and Task Force Marne in Iraq, 20072008 2010.jpg

Global War on Terrorism Series. From the foreword: "By late 2006, 3½ years after the dramatic capture of Baghdad by U.S. and coalition forces, the war in Iraq was going badly. Sectarian tensions had erupted into violence and American public support for the war was at an all-time low. For better or worse, the George W. Bush administration decided to gamble on a troop increase, sending thirty thousand additional U.S. troops to Iraq in order to stop the bloodshed and bring stability to Baghdad and the surrounding area. By June 2007, they were all in place, and the so-called surge began. "Surging South of Baghdad" covers this crucial period in the Iraq war from the perspective of a single division operating in the region south of the Iraqi capital. Before the surge, this slice of territory between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers had become an insurgent safe haven where the enemy cached weapons and built bombs that fueled sectarian violence in Baghdad. Placing the 3d Infantry Division there bolstered a flagging coalition presence in the area and began the process of stabilization and rebuilding. This account offers a snapshot of the surge, its successes and shortcomings, and shows how the Army coped with the changing demands of the modern combat environment."

Michael Anthony - Mass Casualties; A Young Medic's True Story of Death, Deception, and Dishonor in I raq (2009).jpeg

When SPC Anthony joined the Army at 18, he went in with high hopes and sterling ideals; coming from a family with a proud military background, Anthony expected to meet mentors, heroes and lifelong friends while earning money for college and becoming a man. What he discovered was a disenchanting web of mundane corruption and self-serving lies. Unlike accounts exposing the military's most shameful iniquities, Anthony's memoir focuses on an endless parade of petty offenses-the cowardice, drug addiction, thievery, adultery and rampant hypocrisy-he found while working in a base hospital. Relentlessly honest and reflective, Anthony's record communicates perfectly the stranglehold of sadness, fear and disappointment that came with his lost innocence; just as worse is his eventual acceptance of the pointless, dysfunctional bureaucracy maintaining the status quo. Avoiding the intensity of the battlefield and the OR itself, Anthony's frustrations resonate with the feelings of any young man learning about the nature of authority and his helplessness before it. Readers curious about the human side of the ongoing Iraqi conflict will be struck by Anthony's strong voice, direct storytelling and stark honesty.

Josh Lieb - I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President (2009).jpg

Grade 7–9—Lieb's first novel is a comedy/sci-fi fantasy about Oliver Watson, an overweight 12-year-old from Omaha, NE, who fools his family and classmates into thinking that he is slow-witted when in fact he is the world's third-richest person. He overthrows foreign dictators, owns corporations, is a successful inventor and investor, and is on the way to attaining his goal of world domination. This evil supergenius, who makes Artemis Fowl look ready for sainthood, has the appeal of a cartoon villain. His father and arch nemesis is too involved in running a local PBS affiliate and too uninvolved in his son. What Oliver really wants is his dad's approval and attention. He decides that the way to get this is to win the election for president of the eighth-grade class at Gale Sayers Middle School. Lieb perfectly captures the wise-guy sarcasm and trash mouth of a seventh-grade evil genius. Readers will love the sci-fi/fantasy touches, from Oliver's elaborate underground lair to the transmitter implanted in his jaw and his installing root beer and chocolate milk at the school's water fountain (of course, only he knows how to make it work). The format—short blurbs of text interspersed with humorous black-and-white photos—will appeal to reluctant readers. Although the book has as little subtlety as its title, certainly the theme of a boy wanting his father's love is a universal one. This is a book kids will be talking about.

William N. Thompson - Native American Issues (2005 ).jpeg

This handbook attempts to add perspective and analysis to the sort of facts already found in several good reference works. In his lenghthy introduction, Thompson (public administration, Univ. of Missouri) discusses indigenous North Americans in the context of an explication of sovereignty and presents gambling's relationship to Native American economic development, an approach not taken in other Native American reference works. A useful chapter collects court cases, legislation, and statistics, and, as in most other works of this sort, an organization directory and annotated bibliography are included. The Points of View section is perhaps the most useful, excerpting the now poignant words of Native leaders in response to two centuries of majority action. This volume's weaknesses include a detailed but sloppily written and uneven chronology and a too-brief glossary that should have included pronunciation. Also, the biographical sketches include Native leaders throughout history but only list opposing European leaders prior to the 20th century. Ultimately, this book tries to do too much and fails. Too broad and not sufficiently deep, it is an imperfect match for the "Contemporary World Issues" series; many pieces do not treat current Native concerns, and in some cases considerable scholarship is needed to separate fact from opinion. Comprehensive collections could consider, but small and medium collections would be better served by the Native North American Almanac (Gale, 1994), a more clearly organized source for much of the ready-reference information covered here. David A. J. Richards - Fundamentalism in American Religion and Law; Obama's Challenge to Patriarchy' s Threat to Democracy (2010).jpg

USA Books1 - David A. J. Richards - Fundamentalism in American Rel...mas Challenge to Patriarchys Threat to Democracy 2010.jpg

Why, from Reagan to George Bush, have fundamentalists in religion and in law (originalists) exercised such political power and influence in the United States? Why has the Republican Party forged an ideology of judicial appointments (originalism) hostile to abortion and gay rights? Why and how did Barack Obama distinguish himself among Democratic candidates not only by his opposition to the Iraq war but by his opposition to originalism? This book argues that fundamentalism in both religion and law threatens democratic values and draws its appeal from a patriarchal psychology still alive in our personal and political lives and at threat from the constitutional developments since the 1960s. The argument analyzes this psychology (based on traumatic loss in intimate life) and resistance to it (based on the love of equals). Obama's resistance to originalism arises from his developmental history as a democratic, as opposed to patriarchal, man who resists the patriarchal demands on men and women that originalism enforces - in particular, the patriarchal love laws that tell people who and how and how much they may love.

USA Books1 - David L. Pearsom, C. Barry Knisley, Charles J. Kazilek...he Tiger Beetles of the United States and Canada 2005.jpg

This color illustrated field and natural history guide treats all 107 known tiger beetle species found in North America above the Mexican border. Tiger beetles are among the most widely found and popular families of insects worldwide. Enabling amateur naturalists and professionals to use two identification methods--comparison of colored pictures to live or mounted specimens, and use of illustrated dichotomous keys--full biological accounts emphasize points for identification, behaviors, and habitats. Distribution maps show where various species and subspecies can be found. The authors promote a new and exciting activity of insect watching as an alternative or supplement to collecting (the general feeling among "butterfliers" and dragonfly and damselfly enthusiasts). Communicating primarily through the un-refereed journal Cincindela, (Tiger Beetler) specialists themselves prefer the term, "cicindelophiles." They represent an ardent sublet of the growing number of serious amateur naturalists who invest in outdoor activities seeking and identifying birds, butterflies, dragonflies, flowering plants, and various other forms of life.

USA Books1 - Lindsay G. Robertson - Conquest by Law How the Discov...a Dispossessed Indigenous Peoples of Their Lands 2005.jpg

Law professor Robertson presents a meticulously researched analysis of the political rivalries and personal greed surrounding a landmark Supreme Court decision that set the stage for "the judicial conquest of Native America." In 1823, two large land speculation companies brought their case to the Court in the hope of having their claims to land in Illinois and Indiana validated. Chief Justice John Marshall, guided by his concern with maintaining the power of the Court relative to the Congress and the states, and his personal desire to secure land grants for Revolutionary War soldiers, produced his landmark "discovery doctrine" that gave "exclusive title" to those who "discovered" the land. Indians were thereby reduced to mere occupants "incapable of transferring absolute title to others." To Marshall's chagrin, this doctrine led to the practice of "Indian removal," whereby entire tribes were forced to move west as their lands were opened to speculators. Robertson's study is based on rediscovered historical records that clearly reveal how greed for land and power instigated the Trail of Tears and similar tragedies.

William O. Beeman - The Great Satan vs. the Mad Mu llahs; How the United States and Iran Demonize Eac h Other (2005).jpg

USA Books1 - William O. Beeman - The Great Satan vs. the Mad Mulla...w the United States and Iran Demonize Each Other 2005.jpg

The United States and Iran have been estranged for 25 years. They have carried out a mutual process of demonization that is unprecedented in modern history, based on cultural "hot buttons" that have the power to galvanize the populations of both countries. Iranian leaders have characterized the United States as the Great Satan--an evil corruptor that pollutes society and destroys personal morality. These leaders readily make the analogy between the United States and the Umayyid rulers who in 680 C.E. killed the Imam Hussein, the central religious figure in the history of the Iranian state religion, Twelver Shi'ism. American leaders characterize the members of the current government of the Islamic Republic of Iran as "Mad Mullahs," wild-eyed and irrational. They accuse them of fomenting the hostage crisis, in which American embassy personnel were held for 444 days at the end of the Carter administration, dealing a severe blow to U.S. national honor. The Bush administration has further accused the Iranians of being part of an "Axis of Evil" on the basis of their alleged support of terrorists, oppression of women and minorities, and development of nuclear weapons. Giving a thorough account of the background of U.S.-Iranian relations, Beeman claims that the current accusations of both Iran and the United States are baseless, consisting largely of public invective and symbolic rhetoric according to their own mythologies of evil.

Melvyn Stokes - D.W. Griffith's the Birth of a Nat ion (2008).jpg

In this deeply researched and vividly written volume, Melvyn Stokes illuminates the origins, production, reception and continuing history of this ground-breaking, aesthetically brilliant, and yet highly controversial movie.
By going back to the original archives, particularly the NAACP and D. W. Griffith Papers, Stokes explodes many of the myths surrounding The Birth of a Nation (1915). Yet the story that remains is fascinating: the longest American film of its time, Griffith's film incorporated many new features, including the first full musical score compiled for an American film. It was distributed and advertised by pioneering methods that would quickly become standard. Through the high prices charged for admission and the fact that it was shown, at first, only in "live" theaters with orchestral accompaniment, Birth played a major role in reconfiguring the American movie audience by attracting more middle-class patrons. But if the film was a milestone in the history of cinema, it was also undeniably racist.

Cooper Lawrence - The Cult of Celebrity; What Our Fascination with the Stars Reveals About Us (2009).jpg

America’s fast-growing religion is—let’s face it—celebrity worship. From gossip magazines to entertainment TV, from blogs to ads featuring famous faces, the stars are our new gods and goddesses. Their lives often seem as (or more) important than our own. But why are we so quick to put them on pedestals? Why are we even more spellbound when they topple back down to earth? And why do so many of us, on an unprecedented scale, think we could—and should—be celebrities, too?

In The Cult of Celebrity, psychology expert and nationally syndicated talk-show host Cooper Lawrence tells us why we do it and points both to the benefits and dangers of celebrity worship not only to society but also to us—our spending habits, health, social awareness, attitude toward personal failure and toward relationships, and above all, our self-image.

Drawing on the latest research as well as interviews with fans, entertainment industry insiders, and celebrities (Fran Drescher, Kevin Federline, Edwin McCain, and Marcia Gay Harden, to name but a few), The Cult of Celebrity is as accessible and sassy as it is thought-provoking. Frequent “reality checks” offer practical ways to gauge whether you or someone close to you has an unhealthy attitude to celebrity worship. In addition to providing clear steps to tackle the problem, this book offers the many among us who are interested in celebrities for harmless “entertainment-social” reasons tips to keep our interest under control, including danger signs to watch for.

Every bit as addictive as its subject, The Cult of Celebrity is a must for all the smart celeb hounds out there, as well as the parents and friends of those who've gone over the edge.

Alan Brinkley - The Publisher; Henry Luce and His American Century (2011).jpg

Acclaimed historian Alan Brinkley gives us a sharply realized portrait of Henry Luce, arguably the most important publisher of the twentieth century. As the founder of Time, Fortune, and Life magazines, Luce changed the way we consume news and the way we understand our world. Born the son of missionaries, Henry Luce spent his childhood in rural China, yet he glimpsed a milieu of power altogether different at Hotchkiss and later at Yale. While working at a Baltimore newspaper, he and Brit Hadden conceived the idea of Time: a “news-magazine” that would condense the week’s events in a format accessible to increasingly busy members of the middle class. They launched it in 1923, and young Luce quickly became a publishing titan. In 1936, after Time’s unexpected success—and Hadden’s early death—Luce published the first issue of Life, to which millions soon subscribed.Brinkley shows how Luce reinvented the magazine industry in just a decade. The appeal of Life seemingly cut across the lines of race, class, and gender. Luce himself wielded influence hitherto unknown among journalists. By the early 1940s, he had come to see his magazines as vehicles to advocate for America’s involvement in the escalating international crisis, in the process popularizing the phrase “World War II.” In spite of Luce’s great success, happiness eluded him. His second marriage—to the glamorous playwright, politician, and diplomat Clare Boothe—was a shambles. Luce spent his later years in isolation, consumed at times with conspiracy theories and peculiar vendettas. The Publisher tells a great American story of spectacular achievement—yet it never loses sight of the public and private costs at which that achievement came.

Osprey - Graphic History 08 - Dan Abnett - Ironcla ds at War; The Monitor Vs the Merrimac (2007).jpg

On March 9, 1862, the world saw the first battle between two ironclad warships; a battle which would change the face of naval warfare forever. The fight took place in the Mississippi River, Virginia, between the newly-developed Confederate ironclad CSS Merrimack - officially the CSS Virginia - and the Union's counterpart USS Monitor. The four-hour duel that ensued was ultimately a stalemate, but crucially, despite their best efforts, the Confederacy had failed again to break the Northern blockade of the Southern ports. This comic strip narrative illustrates one of the most revolutionary naval battles in world history and transports the reader to the cramped and dangerous conditions that the sailors faced for the first time.
