Rome - The Cambridge Ancient History 12 - Alan K. Bowman, Peter... Averil Cameron - The Crisis of Empire, A.D. 193337 2005.jpg

This volume covers the history of the Roman Empire from the accession of Septimius Severus in AD 193 to the death of Constantine in AD 337. This period was one of the most critical in the history of the Mediterranean world. It begins with the establishment of the Severan dynasty as a result of civil war. From AD 235 this period of relative stability was followed by half a century of short reigns of short-lived emperors and a number of military attacks on the eastern and northern frontiers of the empire. This was followed by the First Tetrarchy (AD 284-305), a period of collegial rule in which Diocletian, with his colleague Maximian and two junior Caesars (Constantius and Galerius), restabilised the empire. The period ends with the reign of the first Christian emperor, Constantine, who defeated Licinius and established a dynasty which lasted for thirty-five years.

The Cambridge Ancient History 13 - Averil Cameron, Peter Garnsey - The Late Empire, AD 337-425 (2007 ).jpeg

With Volume 13, the new edition of The Cambridge Ancient History moves into fresh territory. The first edition was completed by Volume 12, which closed in AD 324. Volume 13, the first of these new volumes, covers the years 337SH425, from the death of Constantine to the reign of Theodosius II.

Daniel Ogden - Magic Witchcraft And Ghosts In The Greek And Roman Worlds; A Source Book (2002).jpg

In a culture where the supernatural possessed an immediacy now strange to us, magic was of great importance both in the literary and mythic tradition and in ritual practice. Recently, ancient magic has hit a high in popularity, both as an area of scholarly inquiry and as one of general, popular interest. In Magic, Witchcraft, and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman Worlds Daniel Ogden presents three hundred texts in new translations, along with brief but explicit commentaries. This is the first book in the field to unite extensive selections from both literary and documentary sources. Alongside descriptions of sorcerers, witches, and ghosts in the works of ancient writers, it reproduces curse tablets, spells from ancient magical recipe books, and inscriptions from magical amulets. Each translation is followed by a commentary that puts it in context within ancient culture and connects the passage to related passages in this volume. Authors include the well known (Sophocles, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Virgil, Pliny) and the less familiar, and extend across the whole of Greco-Roman antiquity.

Robert Brentano - Rome before Avignon; A Social Hi story of Thirteenth-Century Rome (1991).jpg

Robert Brentano evokes papal Rome in all its paradox and complicated brilliance. From a detailed re-creation of the physical "town" with its series of brick campanili and green and purple mosaic floors, to the intrigues of the great families, like the Orsini and Colonna, the reader is guided through complex and fascinating culture. Brentano's skill lies in his ability to combine the story of the vaulting ambition of the great families, only mildly tempered by their very real religious piety, with a vivid reconstruction of everyday life in postclassical Rome.

Stuart Gillespie - Companion to Lucretius (2007).jpg

Lucretius' didactic poem De rerum natura ('On the Nature of Things') is an impassioned and visionary presentation of the materialist philosophy of Epicurus, and one of the most powerful poetic texts of antiquity. After its rediscovery in 1417 it became a controversial and seminal work in successive phases of literary history, the history of science, and the Enlightenment. In this Cambridge Companion experts in the history of literature, philosophy and science discuss the poem in its ancient contexts and in its reception both as a literary text and as a vehicle for progressive ideas. The Companion is designed both as an accessible handbook for the general reader who wishes to learn about Lucretius, and as a series of stimulating essays for students of classical antiquity and its reception. It is completely accessible to the reader who has only read Lucretius in translation.

Osprey PL - WBH 09 - Nic Fields - Powstanie Sparta kusa 73-71 p.n.e. (2009).jpg

(a całkiem niedawno postać Spartakusa wraz z postacią Che Guevary przywoływał przywódca powstania w Chiapas w Meksyku Podkomendant Marcos). Buntownik sprzed wieków stał się symbolem zmagań z nierównością polityczną, prawną, społeczną i ekonomiczną, która niczym czterej jeźdźcy Apokalipsy zagraża niejednemu systemowi

Terry Jones, Alan Ereira - Terry Jones' Barbarians ; An Alternative Roman History (2007).jpg

In the Monty Python film Life of Brian, a member of the People's Front of Judea asks, "What have the Romans ever done for us?" (apart from, of course, the "sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health"). The director of that movie—and now popular historian—Jones (Who Murdered Chaucer?), along with Ereira (The People's England), now answer the question: a bit, but nowhere near as much as the barbarians did. Jones attempts to overturn the popular conception of the glorious Roman Empire, which he says is mostly propaganda, and claims that the barbarians—a general term describing the tribes of western and northern Europe, as well as of the Middle East—have for too long been slandered as "savages" by the allegedly more advanced and civilized Romans and their descendants. In fact, these assorted Celts, Vandals, Persians and Goths were technologically, economically and intellectually sophisticated, but were on the wrong side of history. While scholars will sniff at Jones's offhand humor, somewhat wide-eyed "revelations"—which have been revealed before—and tendency to believe the vastly exaggerated death tolls of the time (he relies on Plutarch's figure that Julius Caesar slaughtered a million Gauls, a virtually impossible feat), readers will go along for a most enjoyable ride and appreciate his fascinating tale of the barbarians' lost world.

Liza Cleland, Glenys Davies, Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones - Greek and Roman dress from A to Z (2007).jpg

Who dressed as a woman in an attempt to commit adultery with Julius Caesar’s wife? How did the ancient Greeks make blusher from seaweed? Just how does one wear a toga?

If, as many claim, the importance of clothes lies in their detail, then this a book that no sartorially savvy Classicist should be without. Greek and Roman Dress from A to Z is an alphabetized compendium of styles and accessories that form the well-known classical image: a reference source of stitches, drapery, hairstyles, colours, fabrics and jewellery, and an analysis of the intricate system of social meanings that they comprise.

The entries range in length from a few lines to a few pages and cover individual aspects of dress alongside surveys of wider topics and illuminating socio-cultural analysis, drawn from ancient art, literature and archaeology. For those who want to take their reading further, there are references to both primary sources and modern scholarship.

This book is be fascinating for anyone delving into it with an interest in style and dress, and an invaluable companion for any classicist.

Peter Connolly - Pompeii (1990).jpg

Grade 6-8-- Full-color photographs and illustrations and detailed sketches grace every page of this entry in an already crowded field of books on the subject. Detailed drawings of houses, shops, and public buildings such as baths, theatres, and temples in their original conditions help readers understand the day to day workings of a Roman town in the first century a.d. Particularly striking are the full-page cutaways of buildings. Each subject is addressed in a two-page layout. Such prosaic details as sewage systems and laundering techniques are given as much attention as gladiator games and drama. The accompanying text is sometimes a bit technical, and some Latin terms are not fully explained. A careful introduction illuminates not only the eruption, but also the early history of the city and the surrounding area. This is as complete and thorough a documentation of the story of Pompeii as any that can currently be found in children's collections.
