Rome - Numa Denis Fustel De Coulanges - Ancient City A Study on...Religion, Laws, and Institutions of Greece and Rome 2001.jpg

This influential survey synthesizes ancient documents and physical evidence to build an account of religious, family, and civic life of Periclean Athens and Rome during the time of Cicero. In bypassing the body of often-glorified post-Classical histories, it builds an accurate and detailed depiction of Hellenic and Latin urban culture."Ancient or modern, the city is among man's most complex creations and probably the most illustrative of both his best and worst qualities. The Ancient City, originally published in the 1870s, provides a 19th-century French view of Greek and Roman metropolises."

Rome - Silvia Cappelletti - The Jewish Community in Rome From t...the Second Century B. C. to the Third Century C. E. 2006.jpg

This volume deals with the development of the Jewish community of Rome in the late Republican and Imperial periods. It uses both literary and archaeological evidence, but attaches a great importance to the epigraphic source. The first section studies the structure of the community, in comparison with patterns attested both in Diaspora and in Eretz-Israel. The second section examines the historical development of the Jewish presence in Rome, and the third section deals with the structure of the catacombs and studies some interpretative problems presented by inscriptions. Through this material, the book tries to find the links between this community and Mediterranean Judaism.

About the Author
Silvia Cappelletti, Ph.D. (2004) in History, University of Pisa, works as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Milano, Italy. She has published extensively on the History of Judaism and of the Jewish Diaspora in Roman Period.

Kevin M. McGeough - The Romans; New Perspectives ( 2004).jpg

The Romans: New Perspectives is the ideal starting point for investigating this extraordinary civilization—its remarkable rise and decline, the scope of its power and wealth, the details of everyday life for its people, and its signature contributions to human culture (food, architecture, government, public works, art, and more).

The Romans takes readers from the establishment of the monarchy (circa 753 BCE) through the rise of the republic (circa 509 BCE), the imperial period, and ultimately to the fall of the empire and the coronation of the barbarian king Odoacer. It is an engaging account of current thinking on Roman life and culture informed by a number of dramatic recent discoveries. The book provides a coherent introduction to the field, while pointing the way toward further reading on specific topics and personalities.

David S. Potter - The Roman Empire at Bay, AD 180- 395 (2004)(1).jpg

The Roman Emipre at Bay is an excellently written, well-documented, clearly structured, very complete and extensive book. Extremely well furnished with numismatic and prosopographical evidence and including the latest scholarship, it cannot be ignored by future scholars of the third and fourth centuries and will certainly take the place of many previous works on the subject.

Gerard Friell, Stephen Williams - Theodosius; The Empire at Bay (1998).jpg

Emperor Theodosius (379-95) was the last Roman emperor to rule a unified empire of East and West and his reign represents a turning point in the policies and fortunes of the Late Roman Empire. In this imperial biography, Stephen Williams and Gerry Friell bring together literary, archaeological and numismatic evidence concerning this Roman emperor, studying his military and political struggles, which he fought heroically but ultimately in vain.
Summoned from retirement to the throne after the disastrous Roman defeat by the Goths at Adrianople, Theodosius was called on to rebuild the armies and put the shattered state back together. He instituted a new policy towards the barbarians, in which diplomacy played a larger role than military might, at a time of increasing frontier dangers and acute manpower shortage. He was also the founder of the established Apostolic Catholic Church. Unlike other Christian emperors, he suppressed both heresy and paganism and enforced orthodoxy by law.
The path was a diffucult one, but Theodosius (and his successor, Stilicho) had little choice. This new study convincingly demonstrates how a series of political misfortunes led to the separation of the Eastern and Western empires which meant that the overlordship of Rome in Europe dwindled into mere ceremonial. The authors examine the emperor and his character and the state of the Roman empire, putting his reign in the context of the troubled times.

Colin Adams, Ray Laurence - Travel and Geography i n the Roman Empire (2001).jpg

The remains of Roman roads are a powerful reminder of the travel and communications system that was needed to rule a vast and diverse empire. Yet few people have questioned just how the Romans - both military and civilians - travelled, or examined their geographical understanding in an era which offered a greatly increased potential for moving around, and a much bigger choice of destinations.
This volume provides new perspectives on these issues, and some controversial arguments; for instance, that travel was not limited to the elite, and that maps as we know them did not exist in the empire. The military importance of transport and communication networks is also a focus, as is the imperial post system (cursus publicus), and the logistics and significance of transport in both conquest and administration.

Constantina Katsari - The Roman Monetary System; T he Eastern Provinces from the First to the Third C entury AD (2011).jpg

Rome - Constantina Katsari - The Roman Monetary System The East...rn Provinces from the First to the Third Century AD 2011.jpg

The Roman monetary system was highly complex. It involved official Roman coins in both silver and bronze, which some provinces produced while others imported them from mints in Rome and elsewhere, as well as, in the East, a range of civic coinages. This is a comprehensive study of the workings of the system in the Eastern provinces from the Augustan period to the third century AD, when the Roman Empire suffered a monetary and economic crisis. The Eastern provinces exemplify the full complexity of the system, but comparisons are made with evidence from the Western provinces as well as with appropriate case studies from other historical times and places. The book will be essential for all Roman historians and numismatists and of interest to a broader range of historians of economics and finance.

DK - Peter Chrisp - Ancient Rome (2007).jpg

Some 2,000 years ago, the Romans created one of the biggest and bestorganized empires the world has ever seen. Throughout their lands, they built towns and roads, and spread their way of life. In far corners of the empire, people dressed in Roman clothes, used the same coins, and worshipped Roman gods.

One of the reasons why their empire was so successful was that, unlike other ancient states, the empire welcomed outsiders. Foreigners could become Roman citizens. At first this was given as a reward for loyalty or for service in the Roman army, but under Emperor Caracalla, who ruled ad 211–217, citizenship was granted to
every free inhabitant of the empire. From the north of Britain to Egypt’s River Nile, everyone apart from slaves could now call themselves “Romans".

Anthony A. Barrett - Livia; First Lady of Imperial Rome (2002).jpg

Livia (58 B.C.-A.D. 29)-the wife of the first Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus, and mother of the second, Tiberius, wielded power at the center of Roman politics for most of her long life. Livia has been portrayed as a cunning and sinister schemer, but in this biography (the first in English devoted to her) Livia emerges as a much more complex individual. Achieving influence unprecedented for a woman, she won support and even affection from her contemporaries and was widely revered after her death. Anthony A. Barrett, author of acclaimed biographies of Caligula and Agrippina, here examines Livia's life and her role in Roman politics. He recounts the events of her life, from her early days as a member of the wealthy and powerful Claudian family through her final conflicts with the new Emperor Tiberius. Barrett also considers how Livia helped shape the pattern of Roman government that prevailed for the next four centuries.

Bart D. Ehrman, Andrew S. Jacobs - Christianity in Late Antiquity, 300-450 C.E.; A Reader (2003).jpg

Christianity in Late Antiquity, 300-450 C.E.: A Reader collects primary sources of the early Christian world, from the last "Great Persecution" under the Emperor Diocletian to the Council of Chalcedon in the mid-fifth century. During this period Christianity rose to prominence in the Roman Empire, developed new notions of sanctity and heresy, and spread beyond the Mediterranean world. This reader incorporates standard texts--from authors such as Athanasius, Augustine, and Eusebius--in the most recent translations and also includes less familiar texts, some of which appear in English translation for the first time. Presented in their entirety or in long excerpts, the texts are arranged thematically and cover such topics as orthodoxy, conversion, asceticism, and art and architecture. The editors provide introductions for each chapter, text, and image, situating the selections historically, geographically, and intellectually.
Christianity in Late Antiquity, 300-450 C.E.: A Reader highlights the ways in which religion and culture were mutually transformed during this crucial historical period. Ideal for courses in Early Christianity, Christianity in Late Antiquity, and History of Christianity, this reader is an excellent companion to Bart D. Ehrman's After the New Testament (OUP, 1998) and an exceptional resource for scholars.

Warwick Ball - Rome in the East (2000).jpg

In this lavishly illustrated and arresting study, Warwick Ball reveals Rome's fascination with the East and the dramatic influence of Near Eastern culture on the Roman world. He explains Rome's obsession with the Eastern world as a desire for the new over the old, of the mundane over the exotic; a love affair that even took literal form in the story of Antony and Cleopatra.
The Roman East had an immense impact on Europe. Christianity is the most obvious one, but there are many others from Syrian emperors of Rome to Oriental architecture, religious and intellectual influences.
Rome in the East presents a comprehensive and coherent study of the history, architecture and archeology of the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, of Roman penetration beyond the frontiers, and of ensuing Eastern influences that brought about Rome's own transformation.

Christopher P. Jones - New Heroes in Antiquity; Fr om Achilles to Antinoos (2010).jpg

Heroes and heroines in antiquity inhabited a space somewhere between gods and humans. In this detailed, yet brilliantly wide-ranging analysis, Christopher Jones starts from literary heroes such as Achilles and moves to the historical record of those exceptional men and women who were worshiped after death. He asks why and how mortals were heroized, and what exactly becoming a hero entailed in terms of religious action and belief. He proves that the growing popularity of heroizing the dead—fallen warriors, family members, magnanimous citizens—represents not a decline from earlier practice but an adaptation to new contexts and modes of thought. The most famous example of this process is Hadrian’s beloved, Antinoos, who can now be located within an ancient tradition of heroizing extraordinary youths who died prematurely. This book, wholly new and beautifully written, rescues the hero from literary metaphor and vividly restores heroism to the reality of ancient life.

Erich S. Gruen - Diaspora; Jews amidst Greeks and Romans (2004).jpg

What was life like for Jews settled throughout the Mediterranean world of Classical antiquity--and what place did Jewish communities have in the diverse civilization dominated by Greeks and Romans? In a probing account of the Jewish diaspora in the four centuries from Alexander the Great's conquest of the Near East to the Roman destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70 C.E., Erich Gruen reaches often surprising conclusions.
By the first century of our era, Jews living abroad far outnumbered those living in Palestine and had done so for generations. Substantial Jewish communities were found throughout the Greek mainland and Aegean islands, Asia Minor, the Tigris-Euphrates valley, Egypt, and Italy. Focusing especially on Alexandria, Greek cities in Asia Minor, and Rome, Gruen explores the lives of these Jews: the obstacles they encountered, the institutions they established, and their strategies for adjustment. He also delves into Jewish writing in this period, teasing out how Jews in the diaspora saw themselves. There emerges a picture of a Jewish minority that was at home in Greco-Roman cities: subject to only sporadic harassment; its intellectuals immersed in Greco-Roman culture while refashioning it for their own purposes; exhibiting little sign of insecurity in an alien society; and demonstrating both a respect for the Holy Land and a commitment to the local community and Gentile government. Gruen's innovative analysis of the historical and literary record alters our understanding of the way this vibrant minority culture engaged with the dominant Classical civilization.

Judith Harris - Pompeii Awakened; A Story of Redis covery (2007).jpg

On that fateful day in AD 79 the city of Pompeii was lost, and in time its location, its inhabitants and even its name were buried and forgotten. Not until 1748 did it emerge from its layer of volcanic rock, and the impact of that discovery was immediate and far-reaching. The evocative story of Pompeii's awakening lies not just in its uniquely preserved classical remains but also in the powerful impact it made on Western cultural imagination. Judith Harris brings the doomed city vibrantly to life. In her rich account of those who sifted through its artefacts, we read of Nelson, Napoleon and Mussolini. Of poets who sought melancholy fulfilment from Pompeii's shattered walls. Of tub-thumping Victorian preachers who likened it to Sodom and Gomorrah. And of the many others -- engineers and architects, artists and filmmakers -- for whom the city has never ceased to resonate. Harris has delved into ancient diaries and descended deep underground to assess the latest excavations. As the sleeping city re-awakens at her hands, Pompeii casts its spell once more, bewitching those who seek to unearth its buried secrets.

Larry F. Ball - The Domus Aurea and the Roman Arch itectural Revolution (2003).jpg

Nero's palace, the Domus Aurea (Golden House), is an influential building in the history of Roman architecture. Because it has been incompletely studied and poorly understood since its most important sections were excavated in the 1930s, Larry Ball's study of the palace includes a needed comprehensive analysis of its masonry, design, and abundant ancient literary evidence. Highlighting the revolutionary innovations of the Domus Aurea, Ball outlines their implications for the later development of Roman concrete architecture.

Richard L. Gordon, Francisco Marco Simón - Magical Practice in the Latin West (2009).jpg

How different was the practice of magic in the Latin West from that of the eastern Mediterranean basin? Was it just derivative from Greek practice, or did it have its own originality? The recent discovery of important new curse-tablets in Mainz and in the Fountain of Anna Perenna at Rome has made the question newly topical. This volume contains the first commented editions in English of most of these new texts as well as major surveys of new prayers for justice. Other sections are devoted to the discourse of magic in the West, to the linguistics and aims of cursing, and to the major field of protective and eudaemonic magic up to and including the Visigothic slates and the Celtic loricae. The essays are by well-known scholars in the field as well as by established and younger Spanish scholars.

John Boardman, Jasper Griffin, Oswyn Murray - The Oxford History Of The Classical World (1986).jpg

This overview of ancient European history is divided into three roughly equal parts on Greece, Greece and Rome, and Rome, an organizational scheme that underscores the historical progression by which the Greek city-states forged empires that the Romans would later inherit. Within this broad outline, authors Oswyn Murray, John Boardman, and Jasper Griffin, all distinguished Oxford University scholars, outline patterns of trade and colonization, look at the rise of philosophical schools and religions, and examine key works of literature. Oxford History of the Classical World, heavily illustrated with photographs and maps, is a fine reference, complete with compact chronologies.
