Classic Hungarian Comics translated to English!

Hi folks,

This thread is going to be dedicated to the works of classic Hungarian comic book authors, like Ernő Zórád, Attila Fazekas, Pál Korcsmáros, Imre Sebők, etc. and of course the provided scans will be translated to ENG. (help of proofreaders and native ENG correctors are warmly appreciated)

Most of the works will be comic book adaptations of classics literature, western, science fiction or fantasy, or occasionally pulp.

As far as Hungary is concerned comic book publication is currently dead and gone. The genre was popular under the Communist rule, though, when most of the greatest works were published, quite often in coloured, album type publications, now, these are the comics I am about to focus our attention on first.

Classic Hungarian Comics Scanlation based on a 1967. Pál Korcsmáros - Tibor Cs. Horváth adaptation of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The pages are somewhat revamped, otherwise it is as it appeared in its original form.

The next short is another side-project we did while Custom subbing old and obscure Hungarian movies. Háry János is Zoltán Kodály's folk opera, based on a Hungarian story, a sort of Baron Münchaussen-plot. These 9 pages are to supplement the musical or the animated versions which were both Custom ENG subbed by us earlier on...

The Three Musketeers in Africa 1966 SWATura-robruss1957.cbr

The adventures of the three pals, Shank, Alphons 'le Blanc' and of course Loghead Hopkins continue in this latest addition to our scanlating efforts, which aims to bring the hidden gems of Hungarian comics to a wider audience. As members of the French Foreign Legion (both voluntarily and involuntarily) this time their aim is to reach the infamous penal camp, Igori. And what they find there, is well beyond their wildest imaginations... This is a continuation of The Cursed Coast, but the story can be read as a stand-alone volume as well. This is a really good shot! The story is a classic pulp from Hungary, adapted into an amazing state-of-the-art graphic novel, and I must admit that robruss1957 and myself really did a good job this time with the translation. I had a bit more time than usual, so the editing is quite nice as well, so, my only hope is that sooner or later it could be officially published, too.

14 Carat Roadster (P. Howard) SWATura.cbr

Hi everybody, I thought I would add another great Hungarian Comic Book to the collection, also translated to English. The book upon which it is based was written by Jenő Rejtő (P. Howard) who lived in the 1930s-40s, and who is still one of the most read authors in Hungary. Most of his works had a comic book adaptation as well, mainly done in the 1960s-70s, and some of them are being 'digitally remastered' lately, and as an added plus, some of them got even translated to English. So, without further ado, here comes the 14 carat roadster, from Classic Hungarian Comic Book author, Pál Korcsmáros. A revamped, digitally restored, color version of Pál Korcsmáros's original black-and-white comic from 1963. A discharged sailor, Ivan Gorchev, wins the Nobel Prize in a game of cards. The young man seeks a friend to share his sudden fortune with, before falling in love with a terribly cute girl, leading to a series of complications and intrigue...

Howard) Drawn by: Pál Korcsmáros Dirty Fred, or in its original form: "Piszkos Fred" is one of the most valued treasure of Hungarian pulp literature for more than 70 years now. Its author, Jenő Rejtő lived a kind of vagabond, adventurer's life, which is clearly reflected in his works, in the stories he told, whether he was writing about criminals hiding in the French Foreign Legion, or British Naval officers working their way down into the Singapur Underworld. Most of his stories were adapted into a comic book format during the 1960s by acclaimed comic strip artist, Pál Korcsmáros, and nowadays, Korcsmáros' grandson and his team are busy digitally revamping the original pages according to the modern expectations. This scanlated version is based on the newly coloured 2006 version of Piszkos Fred, a Kapitány. For those, willing to delve into the curious world of Hungarian comics, it must be noted that we are talking about a style that is clearly different from both the British and American, and the artistic Franco-Belgian traditions. Hungarian comics are first and foremost Graphic Novel Adaptations, and as such, they are full of text and are pretty much void of dialogues containing "Aaargh!", "Slooop!" or "Baang!" Most likely this is one of the reasons why most of the Hungarian comics never really got translated to other languages. I'm not gonna lie, translating P. Howard - Jenő Rejtő wasn't an easy challenge. The story is full of jokes, and cultural references related to an era (the 1930s) to which most of us are not particularly familiar with. I owe an enormous amount of thanxXx to my proofer and retexter, and precious partner-in-crime, robruss1957, who managed to turn my kitchen-English translation into a living-breathing, and smooth text which is undoubtedly better than any (presently non-existing) official translations (would be, if there were any...). I also would like to say a big thanxXx to Jimmy, an Albanian kitchen-porter, who works alongside me in a Sicilian Restaurant nowadays, and who is the perfect, real-life embodiment of Grinnin' Jimmy of this present comic book. Planet of the Apes (Ernö Zórád) ENG V1.0 SWATura-OD.cbr

An ENG translation of Ernö Zórád's Majmok Bolygója is already circulating on the net for some time now, made by British gentlemen, titled: Monkey Planet, but since that translation did not respect the text of the original work, I felt compelled to do another... Pharaoh (Fazekas) ENG V2.0 SWATura-OD.cbr

Fazekas' adaptation of the Polish classic, Joseph Stalin's allegedly favourite novel, "Pharaoh". Special ThanxXx to Akela for his outstanding work on proof-reading this title! Fazekas' adaptation of the Pharaoh. When somebody starts to read the story, it seems like that it is about an enlightened socialist-minded Pharaoh's struggle against corrupt religious conspirators. But one must read the story till the end, to understand the story's value as social criticism. And if one adds the parallels with J. F. Kennedy, or that it was Stalin's favourite book, it is not so hard to recognize Lenin as the young Pharaoh and Stalin himself as High-priest Herihor. No wonder Lenin's enbalmed body ended up in a Mausoleum in Moscow.

A World War II-style "war game" setting the wealthy customers against skilled mercenaries goes awry when the simulated war gets too real.
