Kultura masowa narodziła się jako produkt wtórny rewolucji przemysłowej wraz z urbanizacją i industrializmem. Pojęcie to powinno być neutralne, jest jednak nacechowane negatywnie.
Kultura masowa – kompleks norm i wzorów zachowania o bardzo rozległym zakresie zastosowania. Odnosi się do zjawiska przekazywania wielkim masom odbiorców identycznych lub analogicznych treści płynących z nielicznych źródeł oraz do jednolitych form rozrywkowej działalności wielkich mas. Zjawiska te mieszczą się w ramach kultury symbolicznej.
Dzięki masowym środkom komunikowania realizują się dwa kryteria kultury masowej:
ilości i standaryzacji.
Publiczność kultury masowej cechuje się rozproszeniem przestrzennym; jest to publiczność pośrednia, która kształtuje się w wyniku oddziaływań mass mediów, a nie fizycznego zbliżenia (jak publiczność bezpośrednia).
Publiczność masowa jest heterogeniczna.
Symboliczne treści przekazywane licznej, rozproszonej publiczności muszą być zwielokrotnione (odbitki, kopie, urządzenia umożliwiające recepcję tego samego dźwięku, obrazu jednocześnie w różnych miejscach).
Środki masowego przekazu dostarczają standaryzowanych kopii i zapewniają szeroki zasięg.
Sformalizowanie i urzeczowienie dróg przekazywania.
Kultura masowa staje się towarem wytwarzanym przez wyspecjalizowane instytucje i rozprowadzanym przez wyspecjalizowany system dystrybucji (kryterium organizacji).
Warunkiem rozwoju kultury masowej jest zurbanizowanie społeczeństwa (dominacja ośrodków miejskich). Uprzemysłowienie jest warunkiem ilościowego wzrostu społeczeństwa. Jest więc podstawą kultury masowej. Dużą rolę odgrywa też rozwój techniki.
Masowa kultura symboliczna rozwinęła się najwcześniej jako kultura słowa drukowanego.
Wszystkie powyższe warunki zostały spełnione w okresie od rewolucji przemysłowej do początków XIX wieku na trenie Europy Zachodniej i Ameryki Północnej.

Halbert explores how an alternative framework for understanding intellectual property - including about how we ought to think about the issues, the development of social movements around specific issues, and civil disobedience - has developed. * the patenting of genetic material.

The Triumph of Vulgarity in a thinker's guide to rock 'n' roll. Rock music mirrors the tradition of nineteenth-century Romaniticsm, Robert Patison says. Whitman's "barbaric yawp" can still be heard in the punk rock of the Ramones, and the spirit that inspired Poe's Eureka lives on in the lyrics of Talking Heads. Rock is vulgar, Pattison notes, and vulgarity is something that high culture has long despised but rarely bothered to define. Analiza masowego zniknięcia e-maili w Białym Domu.rar

Amerykańska organizacja obywatelska Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW) i National Security Archive – jednostka Uniwersytetu Jerzego Waszyngtona – opublikowały szczegółową analizę przypadku zniknięcia wielu milionów e-maili z korespondencji Białego Domu prowadzonej w latach 2003–2005. Problemy z programem do archiwizacji, który administracja Clintona wprowadziła w siedzibie prezydenta w Waszyngtonie, zaczęły się wraz z przejściem z pakietu Lotus Notes na Microsoft Exchange jako narzędzia do obsługi poczty elektronicznej; dokonała tego ekipa George'a W. Busha – donosi "Washington Post", powołując się na śledztwo przeprowadzone przez CREW i NSA. Ostrzeżenia o problemach z archiwizowaniem korespondencji kierowane do biura administracji Białego Domu były ignorowane przez urzędników wyższego szczebla.

Jak zauważa specjalista organizacji CREW, Biały Dom nie odstąpił od przesiadki na Exchange'a. Można powiedzieć, że wręcz z pełną świadomością kontynuowano zmianę oprogramowania pomimo ryzyka utraty listów. Ówczesny radca prawny Białego Domu Harriet Miers odrzuciła także złożoną przez biuro administracji propozycję odtworzenia wszystkich przesyłek utraconych w roku 2005. Ostatecznie za 10 milionów dolarów zakupiono nowy program do archiwizacji, który jednak w momencie uruchomienia był w stanie odzyskać zasoby poczty elektronicznej jedynie z ostatnich 48 dni. Radca prawny CREW Anne Weismann twierdzi, że dokumenty, które pozwalałaby uzyskać wgląd w procesy decyzyjne rządu w wielu trudnych sprawach (m.in. rozpoczęcia inwazji na Irak), zostały utracone prawdopodobnie na zawsze.

Pod koniec ubiegłego roku organizacje obywatelskie osiągnęły kompromis z rządem Baracka Obamy, zgodnie z którym zrekonstruowana i zarchiwizowana ma zostać korespondencja e-mailowa z 94 wybranych dni między czerwcem 2003 a październikiem 2005 roku – możliwie w jak najszerszym zakresie. Autorzy śledztwa wyrażają ubolewanie, że badaczom zajmującym się historią prezydentury George'a W. Busha zabraknie wielu ważnych informacji. W momencie odkrycia luk w korespondencji e-mailowej przedstawiciele National Security Archive wyrażali obawy, że historycy mogą już nigdy nie być w stanie wyjaśnić wiele decyzji administracji Busha – na przykład tych dotyczących inwazji na Irak, działań podjętych po przejściu huraganu Katrina albo po skandalu z torturami w więzieniu Abu Ghraib.

A great book that should be read by everybody as it provides valuable information in understanding why our society has seen a disappearance of human values and an increase in hedonistic behaviours with little care for others.
Lobaczewski's great contribution is in showing the process by which people with psychopathic personality disorders congregate and slowly take over organizations, political parties, businesses to finally stifle the whole of society.
It goes to great length in explaining the phenomenon of psychopathy on a macro scale. It deals in a non-judgmental way with the subject of evil. The author clearly lays out the various types of psychopathy and what happens when they combine their various talents and manage to take over a society from the inside and start to rule over normal people in the form of a pathocracy. Though the author primarily deals with examples from his own life experiences under the rule in the former Soviet Union, the parallels to today's world are chilling and very spot on. The book has many footnotes from the editor Laura Knight Jadczyk which clarifies and brings added information to some of the issues dealt with.
The book not only describes the process by which evil takes over but also how it progresses and how normal people can stand up to it. In order to do that, knowledge of the system is needed and that is what this book gives. As the author says at the end of the book then more research is needed, but it is a very profound seminal work that should inspire many to take up this important subject and continue the research.
After reading this book I read 'The Sociopath next door' by Martha Stout, 'In Sheeps Clothing' by George Simon, 'The Mask of Sanity' by Hervey Checkley and 'Without Conscience' by Robert Hare, all of whom deal with different aspects of the phenomenon of psychopaths but on a micro scale. Very complimentary!

Packaging Life: Cultures of the Everyday is a study of the cultural politics of four aspects of everyday life-health, comfort, risk and mobility-as manifest in public culture. The book explores the commodification of these aspects, arguing that our experience and perception of these are mediated by discourses circulating in the mass media.

The author explores how notions of 'good' health, 'cosmopolitan' identities, and 'luxurious' lifestyles are constructed, arguing that such constructions, or what this book calls 'packaging', encourage us to buy particular commodities, adopt certain lifestyles, assimilate specific political beliefs and develop significant anxieties. Discourses, he suggests, morph into consumer practices, where particular kinds of bodies, objects, and practices are established as the norm-safe, stylish and cosmopolitan-so that they appear natural, legitimate and desirable and lead us, consumers, to buy, practice, believe in and adopt them. He also analyzes or tries to 'unpack' this underlying discourse within images, rhetoric, narratives and representations so that we understand the politics behind them.

'Unpacking' cultural politics, this book demonstrates, is the disentangling of the insidious regulatory frames of representation so that we generate dissident reading practices for public culture. The book is an essential reading for those who want to understand modern urban cultural rhetorics. Scholars and practitioners working in the fields of media and communication, consumer behaviour studies and cultural studies will find it highly engaging as well as provocative.
