"Wygłosiłem wiele wykładów, których przedmiotem były tematy podejmowane w tej książce; te moje wystąpienia zwykle oceniane były jako »kontrowersyjne«. Nie wątpię, że i tę książkę recenzenci nazwą »kontrowersyjną«"[1] – w taki oto sposób autor "Zmierzchu i upadku imperium Freuda" uprzedził mnie w ocenie jego książki. Podobnie jak jej pierwsze słowa i tytuł, cała praca jest dobrze skomponowana, zwięzła, mocna i sugestywna, ale jednocześnie jakby z posmakiem zbytniej waleczności i zadufania w sobie.

Autor, guru psychologii drugiej połowy XX wieku, twórca słynnej teorii osobowości, orędownik metod eksperymentalnych i terapii behawioralnej, stara się przekazać kilka istotnych faktów: po pierwsze, osobowość Freuda - jako uzależnionego od matki, niezaspokojonego seksualnie kokainisty - niestety negatywnie wpłynęła na jego zdolność myślenia i tworzenia teorii. Po drugie: badania dowodzą, że psychoanaliza jest skrajnie nieskuteczna, a teoria seksualności dziecięcej nie pokrywa się z rzeczywistością, podobnie jak mit o ojcobójstwie wyznaczającym początek kultury. Po trzecie: interpretacja snów nie odkrywa niczego, czego byśmy sami o sobie nie wiedzieli, a na pewno nie prowadzi do ujawnienia wypartych pragnień z dzieciństwa. Podsumowując: "To, co jest nowe w tych teoriach, nie jest prawdą, a to, co jest prawdą, nie jest nowe"[2].

Zasadniczo taka książka, jak "Zmierzch i upadek" jest bardzo potrzebna. Urzeczywistnia spokojne i racjonalne spojrzenie na dzieło Freuda, podejście do niego na tych samych zasadach, co do innych psychologów. Prostuje dziesiątki wniosków, dopowiada wiele faktów. Umożliwia przez to odbrązowienie autorytetu. A wszystko to za pomocą idealnego - zwięzłego i działającego na wyobraźnię - stylu. Fakt, że książka jest niewielka objętościowo, a przy tym tak ciekawa i rzetelna, że autor nie omieszkał wskazać nam najlepszych prac do dalszej lektury, jednym słowem - jej walor popularnonaukowy, jest jej największą zaletą.

Niestety, istnieje też największa wada, już zasygnalizowana. Naprawdę nie da się uniknąć wrażenia, że Eysenck zajmuje stanowisko niezwykle nieugodowe. Przemilcza osiągnięcia Freuda – to, że zadał on tyle wartościowych pytań w dziedzinie osobowości, rozwoju dziecka, dynamiki relacji międzyludzkich, że faktycznie zapoczątkował psychoterapię. Autor zaledwie wspomina, że psychoanaliza jest ogromnie trafna z hermeneutycznego punktu widzenia, ale nie rozwija tego wątku (ma swoje powody, lecz można z nimi dyskutować).

Potencjalnym czytelnikom książkę polecam, niech jednak mają się na baczności i, jak mawiał sam pan Eysenck, nie wierzą niczemu, czego sami nie sprawdzą.

Sounds blare and pictures flash frantically across the screen. This may seem to be an accurate description of every commercial aired on TV, but such commercials are actually symptomatic of a much more important cultural shift.

Arthur Hunt argues that there is a conceptual transformation taking place today, as we move from an emphasis on the "word" to the predominance of the 'image".
Hunt focuses on the contrast between a Judeo-Christian heritage, characteristically word-dependentâ€”and paganism, typically image-dependent. As people trust experience and visual representations to interpret their surroundings, they focus less on content and more on sensory appeal.
Hunt argues that movements like the Protestant Reformation, Puritanism, and the beginnings of the American nation were all created and sustained in an environment that transmitted its ideas through words, while historical shifts to emphasize image have occurred during periods like the Dark Ages. As the word, both written and spoken, is devalued, there is a renewed descent into paganism.

A wide range of issues ”education, politics, entertainment, postmodernism" are brought together in an incisive, illuminating way. This book examines trends in today's culture and churches that lead away from a word-centered world and into an image-soaked world ripe for propaganda and a demagogue.
