Although the polis, or city-state, defined the essence of Classical Greek civilization, evidence of its most basic characteristics is woefully inadequate. Now, in a work of cutting-edge research, Mogens Herman Hansen develops a novel method for estimating the overall size and local distribution of the Greek population throughout the ancient world - in both the Greek homeland and its colonies - and explains his reconstruction step by step. Reflecting the innovative work of the Copenhagen Polis Centre in its 2004 inventory of Archaic and Classical Greek city-states, Hansen's book makes it possible for the first time to assess the total population of the ancient Greek world. For 232 out of circa 1,000 city-states, the size of the urban center can be estimated, and for 636 city-states, we have an idea about the size of the territory. Employing a "shotgun method", Hansen derives approximate population figures and argues that, in the age of Alexander the Great, the population of all the Greek city-states must have totaled some 8-10 million people. His new estimates take into account not only males of military age but also elder sons and wives residing with parents, widows or divorced women who returned to a family home, unmarried daughters, elderly parents, and slaves. In addressing often-conflicting views on estimating populations, their distribution in various regions, and their settlement patterns within individual states, Hansen particularly challenges the long-standing opinion that the majority of ancient Greeks lived a rural life outside of poleis, and he calls for a reconsideration of long-held assumptions about the prevalence of a subsistence economy with little long-distance trade.

The physical and painted characteristics of each vase are recorded, with an attribution to a painter or group, and a date. The relationship of the painted decoration to other Greek painted vases, religious, or social institutions is discussed. The catalogue will be of interest to specialists in Greek vase painting, and those interested in Greek art and its modern collecting.

This is an entry in the Greenhaven Press Encyclopedia Of series, which is intended to help students with research. The arrangement of the book is curious. Rather than being dictionary style, the topics are broken up into chapters ("Rulers, Heroes, and Other Human Characters," "Major and Minor Gods"), and the topics within each chapter are listed alphabetically. The table of contents lists all the entries in each chapter. An index provides additional access points. Many entries have see references, and if the entries to which the reader is being referred occur in another chapter, chapter numbers are provided.
The book is sturdy and well designed. It will lay flat for copying, and most of the illustrations (photographs, line drawings, and woodcuts) should copy well. The writing should be accessible to advanced-placement middle-school students and above.
Articles range from a few lines to a few double-column pages. One chapter covers 12 major myth cycles, which should be helpful to students with mythology assignments. Also useful is a chart showing relationships between characters in classical mythology. The bibliography has works that can be found in most medium-sized to large public libraries.

Sculptors and Physicians in Fifth-Century Greece is an investigation of how sculptors, physicians, and philosophers interacted at a time crucial to the formation of classical art.

Exploring this interplay, Guy Métraux shows how the depiction of physiological processes gave statues and reliefs their animating force and how many medical and philosophical speculations about the body were derived from depictions in art. He examines works such as the Omphalos Apollo, the relief of the Girl with Doves from Paros, and the recently discovered two bronze warriors from Riace, paying particular attention to developments in the depiction of breathing, blood vessels, and facial expression, to attempts to show actual or potential motion, and to the invention of contrapposto (asymmetry of stance). Sculptors and Physicians in Fifth-Century Greece is a fascinating examination of the interaction between art and ideas in Greek intellectual life.
