Colonia británica desde 1763, Granada consiguió su independencia en febrero de 1974 al formarse un gobierno presidido por el delegado británico sir Eric Gairy. Cinco años después, tras un golpe de estado casi incruento, se organizó un Gobierno Revolucionario Popular dirigido por Maurice Bi-shop y su Movimiento Nuevo Intento Conjunto para el Rienestar, la Educación y Liberación (con siglas inglesas JEWEL). Después, en octubre de 1983, y como resultado de una lucha por el poder dentro del gobierno, el primer ministro Bishop y algunos otros miembros de su gabinete fueron arrestados y posteriormente ejecutados por elementos del Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (PRA). Los nuevos líderes —el general Hudson Aus-tin del PRA y el antiguo ayudante del primer ministro, Bernard Coard— se beneficiaron del respaldo de Fidel Castro y del apoyo in situ de unos 50 asesores militares de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Cuba (FAR), algunos centenares de asesores civiles y obreros de la construcción cubanos, y de un pequeño número de spetsnazy soviéticos. Ya con anterioridad a este levantamiento, la presencia cubana era una fuente de preocupación para el gobierno estadounidense que atribuía una finalidad militar al gran aeropuerto comercial que se estaba construyendo en la isla. El progreso de las obras se mantenía bajo vigilancia por los SR-71 y el presidente Reagan había expresado públicamente su preocupación por la posibilidad de su uso para operaciones militares cubanas en Centroa-mérica.

A QUIET REVOLUTION has taken place in naval aviation. There were formerly two kinds of naval aviators—airship and heavier-than-air. They remained strange birds to each other. Two years ago, however, it was apparent that to maintain a well balanced team to wage battle against any future threat of submarines, it would be a good idea to have all crewmen in the air side of the battle understand what their teammates were up to. Consequently, pilots and crewmen in lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air started changing places. Officers and men long in airships moved ro pilot training at Pensacola and aviation rate schools of the Naval Air Technical Training Command. Experienced aviators traipsed to Lakehurst to learn pilotage of airships. Aviation rated men attended non-pilot school, there to learn about rigging blimps and the principles of airmanship. They acquired new ideas and new skills. Advantages accruing from this exchange are already apparent. Many crews already wise to the ways oi navigation and radar are now in the blimp squadrons, while former LTA crews are operating in an exciting new medium where they have found that their skills in ASW can be put to use in carrier and patrol squadrons whose primary mission is submarine hunting. I.TA men now have a wider field of endeavor. LTA men admit that for many years they were a group apart. Because their activities were not understood they were the butt of many jokes of a low order. Uncomplimentary names were long standard fare for the LTA people, and as a result there was a tendency to draw further away.

AS HINTED at in the September issue, the substantial remains of Handley Page Hampden should have arrived in the UK from Rotterdam by the time these words are read. Located and recovered from Russia by Canadian airline captain Jeet Mahal, the centre fuselage and port wing (the largest single pari) caused road transport problems from the dockside at Rotterdam. Built by English Electric at Samlesbury, the machine carries the constructor's number EEP/22522. However, the tail carries the serial number L6012 (a Shorts-built Hereford reduced to spares in October 1941) in black on silver. It is thought that this is a cannibalised tail and that the green/brown/black scheme has weathered back locally over the years. Visible on both sides of the airframe is the coded letter 'K' in red on black. This indicates either 144 or 455 Squadrons, that operated in the Russian theatre. Once in the UK, the parts will be laid out for assessment for a static restoration. Captain Mahal is delighted to be returning the aircraft to its country of origin. Discussions with a national aviation museum are underway at present.

The Mooney Mite is a low wing single place light-plane powered by either a Lycoming or a Continental 65 hp engine. It has tricycle retractable landing gear and a sliding hatch which, coupled with its trim looks and modern design, make it resemble a little fighter. 1 he airplane Hies as well as it looks. So when the author of this article found out that Dallas Sherman of PAA-Load fame had a Mooney Mite which he was using as a retriever at large contests, a PAA-Load free flight flying scale model was inspired. This inspiration, it must be admitted, was helped along by a letter from Mr. Sherman suggesting that 1 lie Mite be built. The original has a very gaudy color scheme which makes the model even more fun on the field. The model looks like quite a challenge in view of the widespread prejudice against low wing models in general but with only two deviations from exact scale, it flew right off the board. The horizontal tail was increased slightly in size and the dihedral was raised to supply the added stability needed in the model The model in the article has been flown 20 times, including 14 flights at the 1955 Nationals. It will fly with or without the payload without any trim changes. Weight, empty, is 16 oz. and, with the payload, 21 oz.

Homebuilding of aircraft is as old as aviation itself, for the early pioneers had to design and build their own, and many prototypes of advanced designs were first built in this manner. Today's amateur-builder enthusiast has a well established organization available to him for information and assistance. The Experimental Aircraft Association of Hales Corners, Wis., founded in 1953 by its President, Paul H. Poberezny, with the assistance of Bob Nolinske, Secretary-Treasurer, and other local enthusiasts, today has more than 5000 members from all over the U. S. and Canada, and many in foreign lands as well. Local chapters—55 of them—have been formed in various cities of the U. S. and Canada to give members a closcr contact with each other. Matty more arc in the process of being formed as the membership grows. Dedicated to the advancement of sport and private flying, the EAA has become the spokesman for this segment of general aviation. The organization is non-profit, all of its officers serving without remuneration, and all income is used to operate and promote the Association. Several of the officers spend as much as 40 to 50 hours of their spare time each week answering correspondence and tending to other details necessary to operation.

The exact date isn't recorded in model history, but ever since the first dethermalizer was invented ingenious modelers have been trying all sorts of gadgets with but one purpose in mind. And that is to bring that wandering free flight down out of a thermal so that it may fly again. Also, in these days of higher flying models and shrinking flying fields and flight time limits, it is imperative that the contest modeler use a dethermalizer to insure that he can make the required number of flights without losing his plane in the process. In the past, devices have been employed to spin the plane out of a thermal. A sure fire dethermalizer but the speed at which the model strikes the ground sort of prohibits its use. Other devices employed were parachutes, pop-up tails, pop-up wings, pop-apart fuselages, split rudders, and spoilers in the wing. We once read where Jim Walker dethermalized an A J Hornet with a firecracker. It does work. But we don't recommend it as we feel that there are some problems yet to be worked out. In this article, we will attempt to answer the requests of all those modelers who have written this magazine for information on dethermalizers. We will discuss how you may install and use the one type of dethermalizer which has emerged as the most popular and most widely used, the pop-up stabilizer dethermalizer.
