The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was built in greater numbers than any other fighter aircraft in history, with over 30,500 Bf 109s produced. Its service started with the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War during the 1930s and it was still in use in Czechoslovakia in the late 1950s under the guise of the Avia S.199. The Spanish postwar Bf 109 powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine, the Buchon HA-1112-M1L, did not retire until 1967. However, the Bf 109 is best known for its role with the Luftwaffe throughout World War II, most famously during the Battle of Britain. The Bf 109 was an all-metal, low-wing monoplane that signalled the beginning of a new era for fighter aircraft. Willy Messerschmitt's 'Augsburg Eagle' was arguably the best fighter in the world when it entered service in 1937. His design was flexible enough to cope with continual and often dramatic developments over the next seven years. The first Bf 109 variants, equipped with the Jumo 210 engine, were relatively underpowered. Twin machine-gun armament was considered adequate for its day, but would quickly prove to be lacking against a new generation of European fighter aircraft. The adaptable Messerschmitt airframe was transformed with the installation of the Daimler-Benz DB 601 A engine in the Bf 109E-1. Two wing guns were also added during production to supplement the cowl armament. In this configuration, the Bf 109 was truly ready for war. The new 'Emil' quickly dispatched its adversaries in Poland, the Low Countries and France. When matched against the Royal Air Force, the Bf 109E had the edge on the Hawker Hurricane, Britain's first modern monoplane fighter. In combat with the famous Supermarine Spitfire the odds were closer, with the British design having the upper hand at high altitude. The outcome of each encounter between these legendary thoroughbreds depended on the skill, luck or good eyesight of the pilots involved.

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was undoubtedly one of the most significant aircraft of World War II, yet it was branded a failure as early as the end of the Battle of Britain. In those summer months of 1940, Messerschmitt Bf 110s on long-range escort missions suffered heavy losses to Spitfires and Hurricanes. Eventually, Messerschmitt Bf 110s had to be escorted themselves by the more nimble Bf 109s. The Battle of Britain proved that the Messerschmitt Bf 110 was no match for an agile single-engine fighter in a dogfight. However, the fact that this shortcoming was not foreseen prior to the Battle of Britain was not the fault of the Bf 110. Luftwaffe tacticians should have anticipated the consequences of pitting the slower and less manoeuvrable Bf 110 against modern British fighters, especially after first-hand encounters in the previous months over the skies of France. Despite these setbacks in the summer of 1940, the Messerschmitt Bf 110 continued to be used effectively in other theatres and roles until the last days of the War. It served on the Eastern Front in large numbers. Bf 110 units made a significant contribution to destroying the Soviet Air Force on the ground in the opening days of Operation Barbarossa. As the nature of the campaign in the East changed, the Bf 110 was instrumental in the destruction of thousands of Soviet vehicles, including tanks.

High over the fabric-covered wings of a heavily-laden Fairey Swordfish, a bright crescent moon cast a pale silvery glow on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea 8,000 feet below. The 690hp engine roared steadily, a faint phosphorescence occasionally shimmering around the spinning propeller. The pilot and his observer, shivering in open cockpits in bulky flying suits and cumbersome Mae Wests, peered ahead through their thick goggles. Alarming red flashes suddenly creased the distant sky. "Gunfire," thought Lt Cmdr K W Williamson as he adjusted the throttle and pushed his control column forward a little. The aircraft's heavy nose dropped, the altimeter began to wind down and air speed increased to about 100 knots. Williamson levelled off at 2,000 feet, checked his compass course and headed directly towards the flickering flashes of anti-aircraft fire that seemed to be forming a cone of pyrotechnics over Taranto harbour, the main base of the Italian Navy. It was the night of November 11, 1940. Three hours earlier twenty Swordfish of the Fleet Air Arm had taken-off from the crowded flight-deck of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and were now about to carve an important niche in the history of naval warfare. Within a few minutes three Italian battleships were put out of action, the raid marking the end of a centuries-long era in which battleships, with their mighty guns, had been the strongest fighting units of the fleet. Aircraft carriers, with their deadly squadrons of torpedo and bomb-carrying machines, were in future to be acknowledged as the new capital ships of the world's navies. Few battleships were built after 1940. Britain ordered only one, HMS Vanguard, and she proved to be the last ever completed in the entire world.
