The figure is excellently cast in what I consider to be one of Verlinden's better posed figures, in the act of reloading his rifle. On inspecting the various parts, etc., I found only the usual moulding sprues and the minimal of flash, however my attention was drawn to the fact than no bayonet is supplied only a scabbard. Why this is so I have no idea, but whilst trial fitting the various parts I discovered that where the bayonet frog would have been is covered by the knapsack. As this was the case I decided to leave things as they were and if anyone did ask, to use artistic licence. The only other area that brought concern was the absence of the sash that is worn by a Colour Sergeant. After referring to some of my books I discovered that there is some controversy as to whether these were worn in the field or not, therefore, I again decided to leave things as they were. The only other point that I would like to mention concerns the cast-on strapping where the lower water bottle straps needs to be added. I think this is a good thing as a lot of Verlinden figurines need lead foil straps adding and, from my own experience, this can put people off otherwise nice figures.

June 1995 will see the regular anniversary re-enactment event of the battle of Waterloo reconstructed by thousands of re-enactors from all over the European continent, Canada and America. With an estimated 5-6,000 uniformed participants, the 1995 re-enactment is already set to be the biggest and best continental re-enactment ever staged. The events of the 18th June, 1815 are reconstructed on a regular basis every five to 10 years. Normally they are restricted to the area just in front of the original allied position of the ridge of Mont Saint Jean, but this time there will be a difference, as it will be first Napoleonic campaign ever staged with actions at the original battle sites of Ligny, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo itself over the four-day period lasting from the 15th-18th June. There are plans for rear guard actions, retreats, marches, counter marches and vast period encampments. With over 5,000 period uniformed soldiers taking an active part, things are certainly set for a huge event. The last time the battle was restaged in June 1990, on the 175th anniversary, it attracted well over 3,000 Napoleonic re-enactors from all over the world, and an estimated 50,(XX) spectators turned up to watch the action.

In the annals of military history there have been many elite bodyguards and yet none have captured the imagination of modellers quite like Napoleon's Old Guard. These charismatic soldiers are well represented in miniature with many flne figures available on the market today, one such figure being the Airfix 54mm Collector Series Imperial Guard Grenadier. If constructed straight from the box, the model is an attractive piece. However, with a little imagination, the figure can be greatly improved. Rather than build yet another representation of an old guard grenadier in full parade dress, I decided to be a little more adventurous. As a collector of all things Napoleonic, I have always been attracted to the work of one particular French artist, Nicholas Tousaint Charlet. He is probably known best for his detailed studies of the members of Napoleon's old guard. His work is often criticised as being romantic and yet there is much evidence to suggest that he knew his subject well. Char] et took part in the fighting at Clichy Gate in the defence of Paris in 1813 and thus gained an invaluable Insight into military life.

I could not include the Irish Guards In my series on the Foot Guards (October 1990 - June 1992) because at the time of doing my research, photography and writing the articles, the Irish Guards were stationed in Berlin. Their overseas tour of duty finished in April 1992 when they returned to Pirbright, replacing the Welsh Guards for service elsewhere. To make better use of the photographs, the coverage of the Irish Guards has been split into three parts. This month's article deals with the rank and file: next month's will show drummers and mascot and the third, pipers. Finally a feature containing points raised by readers during the series, plus further information I've unearthed to make the overall picture a little more complete, will follow. The Irish Guards have been away from public duties for a number of years and at the time I photographed them, some of the more unusual ranks. Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant, Pioneer Sergeant, etc., had not been issued with their complete kit. including their red. full dress tunics. Consequently. I have used what photographs I have available, which will show how their badges oi rank are worn in various orders of dress.

Although the French émigré Regiment of Montemart did not become involved in as much action as some of the so-called "White Cockade" units raised during the turbulent period of the Revolutionary Wars, it was always well disciplined and well dressed and deserves recognition. The Regiment was raised in 1794. specifically for service with the British Army, by the Former Royalist Colonel, the Duke of Montemart. His son, the Marquis, was his Lieutenant Colonel and another prominent aristocrat, the Count of Andrezal was the Major. It recruited with success and almost achieved the original concept of a corps of two strong battalions, each of nine companies. including grenadier companies, with the addition of a small artillery contingent; although the latter appears never to have reached completion. In 1794 the official commissioning of 106 officers took place to command the, approximately, 1.551 NCOs and men under amis. The Vicomte Grouvel recorded that in the September of that year, at the Regimental Depot at Almelo in the Low Countries, the regimental staff included, besides the colonels, the major, a sous-aide-mqjor a QM. the adjutant, a surgeon major and his assistant; a full regimental band of music and a regimental tailor. There were, at that time, two companies of grenadiers and 16 companies of fusiliers formed in two battalions. Of the company officers there were eight captains, 14 lieutenants, 20 second lieutenants besides six sergeant majors, 11 fourriers (company clerks), 10 corporals and 36 other officers detached on recruiting expeditions.

Sincc April 1992 United NaUons troops have been working to bring humanitarian relief to the besieged people of Sarajevo. The first UN troops in the city were an assortment of personnel assigned to the headquarters of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) which had the task of monitoring the cease-fire between Croatia and Serbia. UNPROFOR s first Chief of Staff. Canadian General Lewis MacKenzie, believed the Bosnian capital offered a safe haven from the Yugoslav civil war. When fighting between Moslems and Serbs erupted in April, the UN headquarters with its predominantly Swedish guard force found itself trapped and helpless. After the visit of Frencn President Francois Mitterand to besieged Sarajevo in on 28th June, the UN ordered UNPROFOR to mount a relief effort for the city's starving population. A French Marine Infantry company flew into Sarajevo airport to protect the UN airlift. A few days later a Canadian infantry battalion serving with UNPROFOR in Croatia arrived after making the dangerous Journey through the Bosnian mountains. Soon its white-painted Ml 13 armoured personnel carriers were pressed into service escorting food convoys past Serbian snipers to the starving residents of Sarajevo. Canadian Leopard Engineer Vehicles also built shell scrapes for UN armoured personnel carriers (APCs) at the airport.

The Grand and National Halls at Olympia in Hammersmith Road, Kensington, London was home, once again, for the 63rd International Model Engineer and Modelling Exhibition. This is the second year that the Olympia venue has been chosen by Argus Specialist Exhibitions for the show, and the Grand Hall, along with its "all round" balcony seems to well suit the very nature of the event. The adjacent National Hall was opened for indoor model aircraft flying and all modelling disciplines were represented, from full blown engineering in miniature, in metal, to works in wood and plastic, including kit-built items, along with radio controlled models. Allied to the competition entry displays was a healthy lone section of models and, of course, good trade support, but sadly no traders dedicated to the military modelling hobby attended. Entries were fairly thin on the ground this year, but what had been entrered in the competitions was of a very good overall standard, enough to see the award of quite a few medals and commendations. The military classes, when one considers the official 63-year lineage of the Exhibition, are relative newcomers, but are judged to virtually the same criteria as the rest of the competitions.

Hall 2 contains a unique collection of well-known Second World War and modem Soviet medium tanks and their self-propelled variants. However, it also has a fascinating array of post-war prototypes. Some are conventional modifications of other vehicles, but some of them are outlandish designs that certainly match the strangest of German wartime projects. The vehicles in Hall 2 are arranged in two rows in a similar manner to Hall 3, although there are just 30 of them. The first row in Hall 2 starts, naturally enough, with the T-34. The T-34 was the standard medium tank of the Soviet Army during the Second World War. It was arguably the best tank of the War, in any army, as it had good armament, sloped armour, good mobility and a reliable chassis. It was also easier arid cheaper to manufacture than its main German counterpart, the Panther. There are two examples in the hall; the first is a T-34/76 Model 1943 (Number 87) with its distinctive hexagonal turret mounting a 76mm gun: This model is sometimes also known under the German wartime designation of T-34/76D. The other vehicle is a T-34/85 (Number 88), a model that was introduced at the end of 1943 and benefited from a three-man turret and a powerful. 85mm gun (originally the D-5T model, later the ZIS-S-53). Outside Hall 3 there is another T-34/85 on display.

There are a number of reasons why I enjoy modelling armoured recovery vehicles in my chosen scale of 1:76. Generally, they are visually larger than standard gun tanks, especially if the specification includes a jib that can be modelled in the erect position. They also have superb potential for super detailing with a variety of useful bits and pieces assembled by acquisitive crewmen. Finally, they form an excellent basis for dioramas particularly in conjunction with other vehicles. Having previously made the Churchill ARV II (Military Modelling July 1982), the Mark I was an obvious choice to add to the collection. Whilst casually looking through Chamberlain and Ellis's book on the Churchill in search of photographs for another project, I came across a superb photograph of the Mark I with a Ram ARV I in the background. Now it just so happened that I have a stock of vacuum formed Ram hulls and turrets in the spares box that were purchased many years ago. Although the photograph was not the best to work on, as far as the Ram was concerned, it was the inspiration for this diorama. Further impetus to commencing work came during a weekend visit to relatives in Devon. Whilst wandering through the streets in Tavistock on the Saturday afternoon I came across one of those combined model and toy shops which was selling some old AFV Profiles, including number 13 on the Ram and Sexton. Needless to say within the publication there were some very useful photographs of Ram ARVs.

When the Falkland Islands conflict was approaching it's final stages, there were still pockets of stiff resistance established by the Argentine special forces. One such pocket was located at Top Malo House, effectively blocking the approach to Port Stanley. The attacking British force was made up of 20 NCOs of the Arctic and Mountain Warfare Cadre and landed by helicopter in the early light of dawn, 31st May, 1982 (ironically 12 years to the day this figure was finished!) They attacked using M-72 LAWS and Ml6 assault rifles at bayonet point, killing five, wounding seven and capturing five. The action was depicted in a film dedicated to the battle entitled Firefight. Members of a special unit of the Royal Marines, the Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre was formed out of the earlier Cliff Climbing Wing (later Cliff Assault Wing). Their original base of training was in Arbroath in 1970. They transferred to Plymouth, shortly prior to the Falklands conflict.
