A startling omission from the extensive literature on the Pacific events of World War II is an analysis of Allied psychological operations. Allison B. Gilmore makes a strong case for the importance of psychological warfare in this theater, countering the usual view of fanatical resistance by Japanese units. Gilmore marshals evidence that Japanese military indoctrination did not produce soldiers who were invulnerable to demoralization and the survival instinct.
The Pacific War was particularly brutal, racist on both sides, and often fought without regard to so-called civilized norms of warfare. Yet Gilmore offers her study as "the story of how psywar personnel attempted to convince Japanese and Americans alike that their assumptions about the other were misleading and counterproductive." To do so, she focuses on combat propaganda-activities conducted in support of military operations and intended to demoralize Japanese combatants-and examines the objectives of the psywar campaign. She outlines the process by which propaganda was created, evaluates the policies that guided that creation, and offers criteria for judging the relative success of these efforts. The work also examines the Imperial Army's training, the strengths and weaknesses of Japanese morale, and the Allies' attempts to exploit the Japanese military structure and ethos. Allison B. Gilmore is an assistant professor in the Department of History at The Ohio State University at Lima. This is her first book.

During the winter of 1943-1944, the Red Army mounted major offensive operations against Hitler's Wehrmacht. By January 1944 the Red Army had penetrated the vaunted "Eastern Wall" along the Dnepr river and was preparing to lunge deep into the Ukraine. In mid-January 1944, Stalin ordered his 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts to crush German forces defending the last portion of the Eastern Wall in German hands, the salient around Korsun'-Shevchenkovskii. The ensuing offensive destroyed a major portion of two German army corps and precipitated the subsequent fighting withdrawal of German forces from the entire Ukraine.
This volume is an unexpurgated translation of the originally classified Soviet General Staff Study No.14.

The camp held a number of prisoners such as Gunter d'Alquen, the journalist; Otto Kretschmer, the 'Wolf of the Atlantic'; and Paul Werner Hoppe, former commandant of Stutthof Concentration Camp in Poland. The history of its inception and creation are described, as is the daily life of the prisoners. Although some were allowed out of the camp to work on local farms others, who were labelled as 'black', denoting their high-risk status, were not. However, all of them had the opportunity to learn new skills or study the many varied courses that were on offer behind the barbed wire.Numerous escape attempts were made but all of the prisoners returned to the camp, either through choice or necessity. Local people give their account of the camp with many having fond memories of the theatre groups and orchestras; one of which played at a local girl's wedding!The camp had a profound effect on Caithness which endures to this day through the friendships built up over its time as Prisoner of War Camp 165. It brings together a plethora of information with links to other camps, not only in the UK. The role of the London District Cage, infamous for its interrogation of prisoners of war, is also explored as is its impact on the camp's history, including the case of the scientist Paul Schroder who worked on the V2 bomb. The Polish soldiers stationed in Caithness, who lived for a short time in the camp before its status changed, are also included in the book as they too had a considerable impact on Caihtness and its people. "Camp 165 Watten" will be of special interest to many people in Caithness, those with local connections and anyone interested in military history.

Gr 6-9-These six volumes, each of which could stand alone, make a cohesive set when read together. The information is accurate and the volumes are liberally illustrated with many rarely seen black-and-white photos. Some color images enhance the texts. Much of the content will likely require some prior knowledge for complete understanding. Sidebars give additional political, biographical, and historical information. The format is attractive with one-quarter to full-page photos, but the captions are mostly redundant. Almost every page needlessly pulls one sentence out of the text and repeats it on the same page in a blue stylized font. Unfortunately, the entire set is plagued with typographical errors, incomplete sentences, and repeated textual phrases. Each volume contains several color maps, but they seem to be too few or misplaced, and are too cluttered, making it difficult at times to find the places mentioned in the texts. Each title concludes with a self-contained time line. The material as presented is acceptable, but the mechanical glitches make these books additional, rather than first, purchases.
