This book is a chronological narrative of the experiences of Evgenii Moniushko, who lived through and survived the first year of the siege of Leningrad and who served as a junior officer in the Red Army during the last 18 months of war and the first year of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia and Hungary. As such, it provides an intensely human view of daily army life in both combat and garrison duty and unique perspectives on the conditions he and other soldiers endured while in army service.

Simon Smith - Local Communities and Post-Communist Transformation (2003).jpg

Post-communist transformation in the former Soviet bloc has had a profound effect, not just in the political and economic sphere, but on all aspects of life. Although a great deal has been written about transformation, much of it has been about transformation viewed from the top, and little has been written about how things have changed for ordinary people at the local level. This book, based on extensive original research, examines the changes resulting from transformation at the local level in the former Czechoslovakia.

Wilfred Loth - Europe, Cold War and Coexistence, 1 955-1965 (2004).jpg

This title examines the role of the Europeans in the Cold War during the "Khrushchev Era" (1953-65). It was a period marked by the struggle for a regulated co-existence in a world of blocs, an initial arrangement to find a temporary arrangement failed due to German desires to quickly overcome the status quo. It was only when the danger of an unintended nuclear war was demonstrated through the crises over Berlin and Cuba that a tacit arrangement became possible, which was based on a system dominated by a nuclear arms race.
The book provides useful information on the role of Konrad Adenauer and the beginnings of the German "new Eastern policy", as well as examining the Western European power policy in the era of Harold Macmillan and Charles de Gaulle.

Filip Spagnoli - The Neo Communist Manifesto (2009 ).jpg

Does communism, against all odds, still have something interesting to say to us today? No grand theory looks quite as good in practice as it does on paper, but an honest appraisal sees some elements of communist theory that deserve to be rescued from the proverbial dustbin, and that is the purpose of this book. This, however, requires a substantial rethinking of communism, a drafting of a kind of neo-communism from which everything that is impossible and/or undesirable is deleted. This book seeks to set the record straight as to what communism means, what it was meant to mean, and what it could mean. The author proposes we give it some fresh thought in the context of economies smashed by the invisible hand of the market. He explores how a form of 'neo-communism' would compare to the winner-take-all capitalism that is eating the globe today. This book differs from other books on communism, such as The Passing of an Illusion by Furet, or The Black Book of Communism by Courtois et al., in that it is not a historical account of the experiment of communist rule in some parts of the world. This book examines the original theory and worldview presented by and finds interesting clues to how we might tackle some of the problems that are still inherent in today'Â’s capitalist mode of production and work.

Bruce Adams - Tiny Revolution Russia, Twentieth Ce ntury Soviet and Russian History in Anecdotes and Jokes (2005).jpg

Communism - Bruce Adams - Tiny Revolution Russia, Twentieth Centur...oviet and Russian History in Anecdotes and Jokes 2005.jpg

This book presents a large collection of anecdotes and jokes from different periods of the twentieth century to provide an unusual perspective on Soviet and Russian history. Anecdotes and jokes were a hidden form of discursive communication in the Soviet era, lampooning official practices and acting as a confidential form of self-affirmation. They were not necessarily anti-Soviet, by their very nature both criticising existing reality and acting as a form of acquiescence. Above all they provide invaluable insights into everyday life, and the attitudes and concerns of ordinary people. The book also includes anecdotes and jokes from the post-Soviet period, when ordinary people in Russia continued to have to cope with rather grim reality, and the compiler provides extensive introductory and explanatory matter to set the anecdotes and jokes
in context.

David Renton - Dissident Marxism, Past Voices for Present Times (2004).jpg

David Renton argues that the roots of today's anti-capitalist movement can be found in the life and work of an earlier generation of socialist revolutionaries, including such inspiring figures as the Soviet poet Mayakovsky, the Marxist philosopher Karl Korsch, Communist historians Edward Thompson and Dona Torr, the Egyptian surrealist Georges Henein, American New Left economists Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy, and many others.

Kristie Macrakis - Seduced by Secrets, Inside the Stasi's Spy-Tech World (2008).jpg

More fascinating than fiction, Seduced by Secrets takes the reader inside the real world of one of the most effective and feared spy agencies in history. The book reveals, for the first time, the secret technical methods and sources of the Stasi (East German Ministry for State Security) as it stole secrets from abroad and developed gadgets at home, employing universal, highly guarded techniques often used by other spy and security agencies. Seduced by Secrets draws on secret files from the Stasi archives, including CIA-acquired material, interviews and friendships, court documents, and unusual visits to spy sites, including "breaking into" a prison, to demonstrate that the Stasi overestimated the power of secrets to solve problems and created an insular spy culture more intent on securing its power than protecting national security. It recreates the Stasi's secret world of technology through biographies of agents, defectors, and officers and by visualizing James Bond-like techniques and gadgets. In this highly original book, Kristie Macrakis adds a new dimension to our understanding of the East German Ministry for State Security by bringing the topic into the realm of espionage history and exiting the political domain.

Alexander Eckstein - China's Economic Revolution ( 1977).jpg

Professor Eckstein's book is a study of China's efforts to achieve rapid modernization of its economy within a socialist framework. Eckstein begins with an examination of economic development in pre-Communist China, specifically focusing on the resources and liabilities inherited by the new regime in 1949 and their effects on development policies. He then analyses the economic objectives of the Communist leadership - narrowing income disparities, maintaining full employment without inflation, and achieving rapid industrialization - and argues that the implementation of these goals required a potent ideology capable of providing a strong faith and motivational force for the mass mobilization of resources. In discussing the methods used by the government to achieve its aims, Eckstein makes a thorough evaluation of China's general framework for economic planning, particularly in regard to the distribution and pricing of farm products and the allocation of resources in the industrial sector. The author also evaluates the radical institutional changes in property relations and in economic organization in the People's Republic of China.
