This book examines the dynamics of the American party system and explores how contemporary American politics was formed. Specifically, it asks how the Democrats could become sufficiently competitive in the American North as to be able to construct a national political majority. It rejects the conventional account, based on 'realignment theory', that between the end of Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Revolution, the base level of support for the Democratic party varied greatly from one era to another. Instead, by distinguishing between the 'building blocks' available to the Democrats in coalition formation and the aggregation of those 'blocks' into an actual coalition, the author shows that there was much less variation over time in the available 'blocks' than is usually argued. Neither the economic depression of 1893 nor the New Deal had the impact on the party system that most political scientists claim.

Gary L. Gregg, Mark J. Rozell - Considering the Bu sh Presidency (2003).jpg

George W. Bush became president under some of the most unusual circumstances in U.S. history. After a contested election in which Bush lost the popular vote, many people felt that he would have difficulty establishing his legitimacy to lead. The events of September 11, 2001 transformed the Bush presidency, as his domestic policy agenda took a back seat to the international fight against terrorism. Considering the Bush Presidency is the first broad-ranging scholarly review and analysis of the George W. Bush presidency. Written by leading political science scholars, it covers such topics as presidential leadership of Congress, public opinion leadership, the symbolic presidency, presidential war powers, the Bush transition, staffing the Bush presidency, executive privilege battles, and Cheney as vice president. It examines the remarkable events and the leadership of an administration that has already become one of the most important to study in the modern era.

James W. Cummings - Towards Modern Public Finance, The American War With Mexico 1846-1848 (2009).jpg

This is the first in-depth study to address the financing of the American-Mexican War of 1846-48. Floating the Mexican War loans was the greatest single endeavour of the American financial community during the 1840s. Under President Polk, the Treasury issued three loans totalling $49 000 000. Investment bankers enthusiastically marketed these treasury notes and bonds directly to the international investing public. Cummings argues that the successful financing of the American-Mexican War had a long-term beneficial effect on American financial institutions and markets. At home, the stability of the Independent Treasury was assured, and abroad, America's international credit standing was restored. Most importantly, the dealing of government issue by investment bankers was a decisive step towards modern public finance.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 273 - Marko Zlatich - General Washington's Army, (1) 1775 - 1778 (1994).jpg

During the period 1775-78, General Washington commanded three separate armies: the New England Army of 1775; the one-year army of the United Colonies, renamed Army of the United States in July 1776; and the forces established by the Continental Congress to serve for three years from January 1777, or for the duration. In this, the first of two studies by Marko Zlatich (Men-at Arms 290 continues the treatment, covering the period from 1779-83), the systems used by state and Continental authorities to procure clothing materials, the quantities they obtained and the specifications of the uniforms themselves are all examined in detail. Men-at-Arms 273, 285, 289, 290 and 292 are also available in a single volume special edition as ‘Soldiers of the Revolutionary War’.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 290 - Marko Zlatich - General Washington's Army, (2) 1779 - 1783 (1995).jpg

For the early years of the American War of Independence, George Washington’s troops were clothed in a variety of uniforms from various sources. With the receipt in late 1778 of over 25,000 uniforms imported from France, much of the Continental army was uniformly clothed in blue or brown coats faced with red. This study by Marko Zlatich focuses on the systems used by state and Continental authorities to procure clothing materials from this point onwards, the quantities they obtained and the specifications of the uniforms themselves. Eight colour plates by the talented Bill Younghusband and a plethora of black and white photographs and illustrations usefully support the author’s detailed text. Men-at-Arms 273, 285, 289, 290 and 292 are also available in a single volume special edition as ‘Soldiers of the Revolutionary War’.

Joseph T. Salerno - Money, Sound and Unsound (2010 ).jpg

Ludwig von Mises said that there can never be too much of a good theory. Salerno proves it in this sweeping and nearly comprehensive book on applied Austrian monetary theory. He uses the Mises/Rothbard theory of money to reinterpret historical episodes, reevaluate the history of thought, closely examine the Federal Reserve policy, seek out cause and effect in business cycles, pre a new understanding of war and social unrest, and clarify the relationship between the state and the central bank.
But it is not just about the past. He presents a great model for the future too with essays on how to tell real from fake gold standards, how to calculate the money supply and follow what the Fed is up to, and how to reform the international monetary system to keep money from the destructive hands of the state.
This book might be considered an intermediate text on the topic. If you have read Menger, Rothbard, Mises, or Hayek on the topic of money and you want to know what is next, this is your answer. Joseph Salerno is the master of the subject, and he demonstrates absolute virtuosity in these pages.
Salerno s yardstick concerns the soundness of money. He is speaking of a subject too rarely raised: the quality of the money itself. Money originated as a commodity out of market exchange. The further the government and central bank drive money from its original soundness, toward a paper money and finally toward digits that government can manufacture out of nothing, the less sound the money becomes, and the more instability, inflation, false signalling, and economic chaos that results.
As he makes clear, money is either absolutely sound (meaning, part of the market order) or it is headed on that slide toward destruction. In the final commentary section, Salerno directly addresses modern monetary madness and speculates on the future.
This tome covers nearly thirty years of important contributions by Professor Salerno defining and defending sound money from its critics and pseudo friends. The volume be a must in the library of anyone, whether scholar, pundit, policy wonk, or educated laymen, who truly wants to understand our current crisis and participate in a meaningful way in a program for a return to sound money. - John P. Cochran, Metropolitan State College of Denver

Joseph T. Salerno - Money, Sound and Unsound (2010 ).pdf

This is an astoundingly thorough, incisive and even inspired book. It deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Mises's The Theory of Money and Credit and Hulsmann s the Ethics of Money Production. I have known and admired Joe Salerno for many years. May this be the first of many more of his books. If we are to attain monetary sanity, this publication will be one of only a very few that will lead the way. - Walter Block, Loyola University, New Orleans
Now in the midst of financial upheavals the book by Dr Salerno Money, Sound and Unsound is an eye opener. The book debunks various fallacies spread by popular media and various experts. The book also pres the reader with the necessary framework of thinking to navigate in the chaotic economic environment. This book is a must not only for the students of economics but also a must for every investor who wants to protect his wealth. - Frank Shostak, Mann Financial
Professor Salerno has written a magnificent book, fascinating and thorough in its scholarship of monetary theory and the history of monetary affairs. It is an indispensable reference for students of monetary economics, a truly "must read". - Thorsten Polleit, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.

George A. Dorsey - The Pawnee Mythology (2008).jpg

"The Pawnee Mythology", originally published in 1906, preserves 148 tales of the Pawnee Indians, who farmed and hunted and lived in earth-covered lodges along the Platte River in Nebraska. The stories, collected from surviving members of four bands-Skidi, Pitahauirat, Kitkehahki, and Chaui-were generally told during intermissions of sacred ceremonies. Many were accompanied by music. George A. Dorsey recorded these Pawnee myths early in the twentieth century after the tribe's traumatic removal from their ancestral homeland to Oklahoma. He included stories of instruction concerning supernatural beings, the importance of revering such gifts as the buffalo and corn, and the results of violating nature. Hero tales, forming another group, usually centered on a poor boy, who overcame all odds to benefit the tribe. Other tales invited good fortune, recognized wonderful beings like the witch women and spider women, and explained the origin of medicine powers. Coyote tales were meant to amuse while teaching ethics.

Alex Vitale - City of Disorder, How the Quality of Life Campaign Transformed New York Politics (2008 ).jpg

In the 1990s, improving the quality of life became a primary focus and a popular catchphrase of the governments of New York and many other American cities. Faced with high levels of homelessness and other disorders associated with a growing disenfranchised population, then mayor Rudolph Giuliani led New York's zero tolerance campaign against what was perceived to be an increase in disorder that directly threatened social and economic stability. In a traditionally liberal city, the focus had shifted dramatically from improving the lives of the needy to protecting the welfare of the middle and upper classes—a decidedly neoconservative move.

In City of Disorder, Alex S. Vitale analyzes this drive to restore moral order which resulted in an overhaul of the way New York views such social problems as prostitution, graffiti, homelessness, and panhandling. Through several fascinating case studies of New York neighborhoods and an in-depth look at the dynamics of the NYPD and of the city's administration itself, Vitale explains why Republicans have won the last four New York mayoral elections and what the long-term impact Giuliani's zero tolerance method has been on a city historically known for its liberalism.

Jeffrey A. Kroessley - New York, Year by Year, A C hronology of the Great Metropolis (2002).jpg

If any city deserves a complete chronology, it is surely New York. New York, Year by Year is a cornucopia of the familiar and the forgotten, the historic and the ephemeral, the heroic and the banal. In this handy reference work, Jeffrey A. Kroessler takes us from Verrazano's arrival in 1524 into the new millennium, highlighting the strikes and strikeouts, tunnels and towers, personalities and parades which not only made history in New York, but also proved to be defining moments for the nation.

New York, Year by Year features events such as Mark Twain's first lecture at Cooper Union, and the letter he later wrote when the Brooklyn Public Library tried to restrict access to Huckleberry Finn. In contrast, we are reminded of the publication in the 1950s of Eloise, A Book for Precocious Grown-Ups, Kay Thompson's fanciful tale of a little girl's adventures in the Plaza Hotel, the appearance of the Beat Generation, and the flight (literally) of the Dodgers and Giants to California. New York, Year by Year chronicles the opening of Shea Stadium in April 1964 and the performance by the Beatles there that August. The Sixties also saw the opening of The Fantastiks, which is still running on Sullivan Street, and the closing of Steeplechase, the last of the great amusement parks at Coney Island. And this chronology makes sure we don't forget when Kitty Genovese was murdered in Kew Gardens and her cries for help were left unanswered because her neighbors "didn't want to get involved." Kroessler leads us on a tour of the city from its first settlers until the November 2001 election of a new mayor for the new millennium.

From the colonial era and the Revolution through the Gilded Age and the Roaring Twenties, Kroessler has compiled a record of cultural, economic, political, and social events. Some are of transient importance, others of lasting significance, but all illuminate the city's fascinating history.

Jorge Luis Borges - An Introduction to American Li terature (1974).jpg

Authors Preface
The limited space available in these outlines has obliged us to sum up nearly three
centuries of literary activity in a single compact volume. There are in English many
exhaustive histories of American literature, as seen from various points of view, not
excluding the psychoanalytical. Plentiful also are those which try to make literature a
branch of sociology. Such has not been our purpose; for us the essential ingredient is the
esthetic one. In the United States, as in England, literary groups and coteries are less
important than individuals; literary works come into being as the natural product of
individual lives. We have preferred therefore to be guided by the appeal which the works
have had for us. Furthermore, it goes without saying that the history of a literature cannot
leave out of account the history of the country which produced it, and we have therefore
included certain indispensable references.
It is perhaps not superfluous to mention that this compendium deals with topics which are
not found in more comprehensive volumes, as for instance the detective story, science
fiction, tales of the West, and the strange poetry of the American Indian.
Our fundamental purpose has been to encourage an acquaintance with the literary
evolution of the nation which forged the first democratic constitution of modern times.
