Biography
VM Petrov was born on July 10 ( July 22 ), 1896 in St. Petersburg .
He studied at the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University and simultaneously - at the dramatic department of the theatrical school at the Alexandrinsky Theater (student of Yuri Mikhailovich Yuryev ). He worked as an actor and director in provincial theaters. During the First World War he graduated from the Odessa School of Ensigns and served in the army.
Creative activity began as a dramatic actor, since 1917 he played in the "Forest Winter Theater" in Petrograd . Member of the Civil War.
Since 1918 he was an actor and director in the troupe of the famous theater director Gordon Craig in England and returned to Russia in 1920 .
There were other versions of his life in the war years. So, according to the writer Boris Vasilyev , there were rumors in the creative environment that Petrov was a white officer, a participant in the First Kuban campaign , taken prisoner, but released at the personal request of Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko . According to another version, he served as the chief of counterintelligence with General Denikin , but voluntarily went over to the side of the Bolsheviks. He was also called a scout in the rear of the army of General Mamontov and an English spy who surrendered the agents, for which he was pardoned.
In 1924 he studied film director Vyacheslav Viskovsky , and in 1925 he graduated from N. Morozov's film courses in Leningrad and began working as an assistant to the director at the Sevzapkino film studio (now Lenfilm ). He worked with Vyacheslav Viskovsky, Semyon Timoshenko , Grigory Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg .
In 1928, his first directorial work took place - together with Nikolai Beresnev, he put the children's film Golden Honey, which was responsible for the re-education of homeless children in the children's labor commune. This film for several years ahead of another famous tape about homeless children - "Putting into life " (1931).
For the children and young people, his subsequent pictures, Joy and Druzhok ( 1928 , with M. Khukhunashvili) and Lenin's Address ( 1929 ), and Fritz Bauer ( 1930 ) were also intended for children and youth.

Among the leading Soviet filmmakers Vladimir Petrov entered after the adaptation of Ostrovsky's play Groza ( 1934 ), in which an outstanding actor's ensemble composed of Alla Tarasova , Varvara Massalitinova , Mikhail Tarkhanov , Mikhail Tsarev , Mikhail Zharov was occupied.
Outstanding work of Vladimir Petrov was a large-scale historical painting "Peter the First" ( 1937 - 1939 ) on the novel of the same name by AN Tolstoy . The lead role in it was performed by Nikolai Simonov , and this work became the greatest actor achievement of Soviet cinema of the 1930s.
Since 1943, Vladimir Petrov worked at the film studio " Mosfilm " and in 1944 shot a picture of "Kutuzov" , in which the main role was played by Alexei Dikiy . In 1945, the director transferred to the screen a play by A. Ostrovsky "Guilty Without Guilt" , marked by the Venice Film Festival Prize, and in 1948 - 1949 staged the film "The Battle of Stalingrad . "
The screen versions of Russian literary classics remained in the center of Vladimir Petrov's creativity and in the 1950s - The Inspector General (according to NV Gogol , 1952 ), The Duel ( according to AI Kuprin , 1957 ) and "The Eve" (on IS Turgenev , 1959 ). The last work of the director was the picture "Russian Forest" , which he put in 1964 after the novel by Leonid Leonov . It is worth noting that Vladimir Petrov was the author of the scripts of most of his films.
