Following a possible bomb hit, or perhaps just intense AA fire from her own machine guns, smoke is rising from Yahagi's amidships. She would shortly be crippled and brought to a standstill by a torpedo that blew up her engine room, killing everyone inside

Destroyer Asashimo, lagging miles behind the Yamato Task Force because of engine trouble, was the first ship to be attacked by USN planes. Her last transmission : "Engaging 40 enemy planes." Here she has just dodged a bomb to her starboard. Her escape was short-lived as several bombs tear into her midsection stopping her dead in the water

Yamato fires her forward 18.1" guns at approaching US Navy planes. Low cloud cover made accurate aiming of the 'San-shiki' shells nearly impossible when the Navy planes were about 10 kilometers away; later on during the desperate battle, according to Spurr, Yamato's guns (probably the 5" AA guns, not the main batteries) were leveled and fired into the water in front of the attacking torpedo bombers in the hope that the resulting geysers would make aiming the torpedo drops more difficult
