Die Geschichte der Hubschrauber begann 1904, als der russische Wissenschaftler Professor Schukowski eine Studie unter dem Titel "Anhebung von Nutzlasten durch Drehflügler" veröffentlichte. Dies hatte zur Folge, daß vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg die Hubschrauberentwicklung ausschließlich auf Rußland beschränkt blieb. Sie war dabei vor allem mit den Namen Jurjew und Sikorski verknüpft. In Deutschland konstruierte 1913/14 Baum-gärtel einen Haubschrauber mit co-axialen gegenläufigen Rotoren, der aber über kurze Luftspriinge nicht hinaus kam. Der Erste Weltkrieg unterbrach eine weitere Entwicklung. 1927 hatte Anton Flettner, der sich durch verschiedene Erfindungen auf dem Gebiet der Strömungstechnik einen Namen gemacht hatte, begonnen, sich mit dem Gedanken des Hubschraubers zu befassen. Es entstand eine Konstruktion mit einem großen Rotor, an dessen Blattenden 20 PS-Motore, die über kleine Luftschrauben den großen Rotor in Umdrehungen versetzten, montiert waren. Die Maschine erhob sich tatsächlich vom Boden, wurde dann aber durch eine plötzliche Windbö restlos zerstört. Flettner brach seine Versuche ab, gab aber die Idee nicht auf. 1928 führte Zaschka auf dem Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof Versuche mit einem zweirotorigen Hubschrauber durch, die aber nicht zum Erfolg führten.

Using these legends as a lens through which to study patriarchal societies, Geary chooses moments and texts that illustrate how ancient authors (all of whom were male) confronted the place of women in their society. Unlike other books on the subject, Women at the Beginning attempts to understand not only the place of women in these legends, but also the ideologies of the men who wrote about them.
