This is the second volume in a new series of books on classic armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) centred around the growing range of 1:32 scale model construction kits manufactured by Airfix Products Limited. As with the previous volume on the Crusader, each book in the series will begin by describing the development and fighting record of the particular AFV concerned, then go on to give step-by-step instructions for military modellers wishing to add even more detail to, or convert, the Airfix kits.
Despite being a rushed, interim, design the M3 Medium which forms the subject of this book was a highly successful tank which managed to bloody the nose of the Axis powers in North Africa before the arrival of its successor, the M4 Sherman; and which soldiered on in various guises until the end of the war.
Developed from the American M2 Medium, which never saw action, the M3 was a large and well-armed tank, more sophisticated in many ways than contemporary British, German or Russian designs, and well-liked by its crews despite a high silhouette which made it an easy target. British experience in the desert had shown the need for a larger gun than their existing 2 pdrs, so the M2 was redesigned to take a 75 mm weapon in a sponson on the side of the hull, in addition to the 37 mm gun in its turret. The versatile 75 mm gun was gyro-stabilised so that it could be fired on the move, and was also capable of firing high explosive ammunition in addition to armour piercing shells, an attribute lacking in British tank guns. This facility enabled the M3 crews to engage even the dreaded German '88* on more even terms than hitherto.
A British purchasing commission ordered large
numbers of M3s in June 1940, but requested alterations to the turret in order to accommodate a British radio. This version, which first saw action at Gazala in 1942, was known to the British as the 'Grant' while its unmodified counterpart was called the 'Lee'.
Production of the M3 ended in December 1942, by which time over 6,000 had been built, and although it was superseded by the Sherman it soldiered on to the end of the war in the Far East and was modified into a number of special-purpose variants — including the famous 'Priest' self-propelled gun — which did see action in Italy and NW Europe.
The M3 tarried a crew of six men, had a top sj>eed of 26 mph and armour thickness of up to 57 mm. Willi a range of 120 miles, and carrying 46 to 65 rounds for its 75 mm gun, it was a useful weapon which played a major role in halting the Afrika Korps and, although often neglected by both historians and modellers, deservedly earned lor itself a niche in the history of weapons which won the war as well as a place in any military model collection.

In Part Two he then goes on to show how the Airfix 1:32 scale models of the Lee and Grant can be super-detailed and 'customised' to individual taste, and e\en converted into special-purpose variants such as the CDL, ARV and Priest. This book is thus a veritable mine of information for every military historian, tank and AFV enthusiast and military modeller.

Arguably the most important tank of World War 2 - if only in terms of numbers produced - the American Medium M4 had by 1944 become the mainstay of the British Army's armored force.
In response to the defeat suffered by the British and Commonwealth forces at Tobruk in June 1942 President Roosevelt at once promised whatever help the United States might be able to give. The President himself suggested that the US Army's 2nd Armored Division be sent forthwith to North Africa. However, the impracticability of this plan became almost immediately apparent and the decision was made instead to strip an American armored division of its tanks and send them to 8th Army.
Despite the difficulties of moving this amount of hardware, and the loss of one of the freighters with all hands to a German U-Boat, some 252 Shermans were on hand by the start of Operation Lightfoot - the Second Battle of El Alamein - in October 1942. In line with their practice of naming tanks it was in fact the British, at the suggestion of Winston Churchill, who gave the tank the name by which it would become universally known - Sherman. The prefix General was thought to be unnecessary.
By the war's end the Sherman had served as medium tank, recovery vehicle and in a host of specialist roles. The basic designs had undergone innumerable minor modifications and the final production figures would exceed 40,000, the various models being built by 11 major manufacturers. This figure does not include the self-propelled artillery pieces or tank-destroyers which utilized the Sherman chassis.

The T-34 was the single most effective tank design of the Second World War. It was produced in larger numbers than any other tank and few subsequent tank designs escaped its revolutionary influences. When it originally entered combat in the summer of 1941, it was markedly superior to any tank in the German arsenal. The Wehrmacht was able to eventually counter the T-34 with heavier tanks like the Panther, Tiger and Royal Tiger, but the introduction of the improved T-34-85 and the new IS-2 restored Soviet superiority. The Wehrmacht paid for the technical ingenuity of the Panthers and Tigers by their enormous cost, complexity and frequent unreliability. The smaller and more robust T-34 could be produced in quantities, two or three times greater than its German adversaries and, in the end, emaciated German tank regiments were routed by an overwhelming wave of Soviet tank brigades.

With the end of WWI, the military services of" the nations involved, set otit to sttidy and evaluate their combat experiences. One conclusion, above all, was evident - that mechanization would play an important role in any future conflicts. Frontline troops would utilize specialized vehicles to transport them into combat, arm them and keep them supplied. The main offensive weapon of the future would be the tank. Indeed, the concept of tank warfare was of such importance, that Germany was prohibited From developing her own armored force by the Treaty of Versailles.
The tank had captured the imagination of military men the world over. I n the post war years, the doctrine of mechanized warfare was being slowly created and tested in exercises by the victors. Germany was forced to patiently sit back and wait, all the while studying the methods being developed by the other nations, primarily. Great Britain.
There were two different philosophies on the employment of AFVs in combat. The first stemmed directly from the experiences of WWI, when tanks were used to storm enemy positions in support oi" the infantry. In this form, the tanks were subordinated to the infantry and provided the means by which the enemy position could be assaulted and occupied with a minimal number of casualties. The other philosophy dictated that tanks play the primary role, with all other weapons being subordinated to the armored force. The faster and more maneuverable tanks would be used in decisive assaults to break through at the point oi* least resistance and rampage through the enemy rear echelons, clisrupting communications and supplies and demoralizing their troops, while motorized infantry protected the tanks and consolidated the territorial gains. This was the doctrine to which fvlajor Heinz Guderian and other tank enthusiasts in the German Army subscribed.

He is married with 3 grown up children.

This title (by David Fletcher, though he is uncredited on the cover), is a quick overview of the development of the Cromwell cruiser tank with a selection of photos. This is followed by an edited reprint of the vehicle manual for the Cromwell Mk.I, which has all sorts of handy close-up pictures and internal details. It might have been more useful if the operational Mk.IV variant had been profiled, but most details remained the same apart from the main armament. A set of 1/35th scale plans of the Mk.I and stowage drawings for several later variants round out the book.

The M103 heavy tank served the United States Army and the US Marines during the Cold War. Until the development of the M1A1 in the mid 1980s, it was the heaviest and most heavily-armed tank in US service. The M103 was manufactured at the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant and the first units were accepted in 1957.

The M41 Walker Bulldog was an U.S. light tank developed to replace the M24 Chaffee. It was named for General Walton Walker who died in a jeep accident in Korea. On 7 November 1950, the US Ordnance Committee Minutes (OCM) issued item #33476, redesignating the heavy, medium, and light tank classifications to classifications according to armament; the 120mm (heavy) Gun Tanks, 90mm (medium) Gun Tanks, and the 76mm (light) Gun tanks.

The Tiger and King Tiger tanks gained legendary status during World War II. Numerous tank commanders attained phenomenal tallies of kills and accomplished extraordinary feats during combat in these tanks, building the legend to near mythic proportions after the war.
During WWII, the Germans created eleven Army and three Waffen-SS heavy tank battalions. These heavy tank battalions were employed in nearly every part of Europe against almost every enemy of Germany. The author has taken a wider than usual view of the different ways in which armies have combated tanks, ranging from WW1 makeshift efforts, through interwar anti-tank-rifles, WW2 anti-tank guns and aircraft, to modern missiles and helicopter armament.

The penalty of covering such a lot of ground is that no part of it is explored in much depth, and the treatment is also rather uneven. So although anti-tank rifles and guns are reasonably well covered, the specialised anti-tank aircraft and helicopters receive only sketchy treatment.

Credit is due for describing some of the less well-kown equipment, particularly the non-German European interwar guns, about which little information is available elsewhere.

A yellow triangle apex down, outlined in black, displaying the head of an aggressive-looking bull with red nostrils and tips to his horns; the device, or Divisional Sign, of the 79th Armoured Division. This beast was in a sense the oft'spring of a full-bodied creature which served to identify the 11th Armoured Division. The connection between the two was Major-General Sir Percy Hobart, an outstanding, outspoken and therefore controversial officer, whose stormy career spanned both World Wars. Commencing as a Royal Hngineer, Hobart translerred lo the 'lank Corps in 1923. The new corps, which was permanently established in September of that year and granted the Royal status a month later, embodied the spirit of progress in the post-war army and thus became a natural magnet for young officers of vision, among whom Hobart was in the van.
