The Post-Darwinian Controversies offers an original interpretation of Protestant responses to Darwin after 1870, viewing them in a transatlantic perspective and as a constitutive part of the history of post-Darwinian evolutionary thought. The impact of evolutionary theory on the religious consciousness of the nineteenth century has commonly been seen in terms of a 'conflict' or 'warfare' between science and theology. Dr. Moore's account begins by discussing the polemical origins and baneful effects of the 'military metaphor', and this leads to a revised view of the controversies based on an analysis of the underlying intellectual struggle to come to terms with Darwin. The middle section of the book distinguishes the 'Darwinism' of Darwin himself amid the main currents of post-Darwinian evolutionary thought, and is followed by chapters which examine the responses to Darwin of twenty-eight Christian controversialists, tracing the philosophical and theological lineage of their views. The paradox that emerges - that Darwin's theory was accepted in substance only by those whose theology was distinctly orthodox theology and of other evolutionary theories with liberal and romantic theological speculation.

In this volume, Professor Brenner recounts how the United States dealt with the problem of nuclear proliferation in the period from 1974 to 1981 when this book was first published. The year 1974 is critical because of three highly coincidental events: India's explosion of a bomb; an upsurge in the demand for nuclear energy triggered by the oil crisis; and the commercialisation of fuel-producing technologies that could be used for weapons purposes. Nuclear Power and Non-Proliferation is at once a narrative account of how nuclear policy was made at the highest levels of the American government and a critical assessment of those policies. Professor Brenner places the chronicle of how policy is shaped within the context of interagency and legislative politics, as well as within the larger context of international conflicts concerning access to and control of nuclear power. The author locates the proliferation problem historically, emphasising the dual personality of atomic power and noting the tendency of military and civilian programmes to diverge steadily until the events of 1974 forced an attempt to bring them into single focus.

Death Investigation: Systems and Procedures is the first book dedicated to the topic of death investigation from a legal standpoint as well as the administrative and operational procedures that pertain to the medical examiner and the coroner system in the United States. Unique in its perspective, this book is the only one not concerned with instructing on investigatory conduct, autopsy procedure, pathology, or the solving of crimes. Instead, it explains the concepts and principles of death investigation established by governments, and outlines the legal and administrative steps that must be taken throughout the case.

Beginning with an introduction to the basic types of death investigation, the text explains the circumstances and statutory basis for death investigation systems. The author provides specific details about the role of coroners, medical examiners, and other forensic scientists and personnel who may officially be a part of the investigation. The overall goals of the investigations are included along with case studies and examples illustrating the procedures used in each type. The author also adds a brief summary of the specific system employed by each state. A considerable portion of the book is devoted to practical considerations such as the contents of the autopsy report, the death certificate, principles and issues related to evidence and expert witnesses, as well as a description of a typical day at a medical examiner's or coroner's office.

Well referenced with websites and sources of further information, Death Investigation: Systems and Procedures provides a comprehensive, concise procedural reference to students and professionals including lawyers, crime scene technicians, and anyone who works with death investigation data, or within the death investigation systems in the United States.

This is a highly informative study that will be of interest to a broad range of academics and can be drawn upon as additional reading for advanced courses on human rights. It is a very welcome addition to the literature on human rights and terrorism. Different readers will gain different things from a thought-provoking study. Ed Bates Human Rights Law Review Vol 9, No 3, August 2009 In view of the concerns over terrorism and the preoccupation with human rights protections in the contemporary world, Sottiaux's study on the limitations of rights is a most welcome contribution to the legal scholarship...Sottiaux provides a useful analysis of the judicial review of contemporary strategies of counter-terrorism on the basis of human rights considerations. Mathieu Deflem The Law and Politics Book Review Vol. 18 No.7 (July 2008) Until now there did not exist a clear composition drawing up the differences between the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution with regard to terrorism-related limitations. With the current book Sottiaux filled that gap admirably and thus created a precious help for practitioners in that field of law. Katrin Gruber Vienna Online Journal on International Constitutional Law Issue 4/2008 ...Stefan Sottiaux delivers an impressively comprehensive and detailed examination of this issue...In its primary purpose the analysis of how a model of limitation may influence the outcome of the 'balancing exercise' the book is compelling. It is to be recommended as an excellent reviewof the relevant ECHRandUS case-law for anyone interested in the relationship between counter-terrorism and human rights. Daniel Moeckli Modern Law Review (2009) 72 (1) This impressive and highly relevant book offers both a theoretical account of the paradoxical relationship between terrorism and human rights, and a comprehensive comparative survey of the major decisions in this respect of the highest courts on both sides of the Atlantic, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the United States Supreme Court (SC). This work is highly recommended as an excellent description and legal analysis of the ECHR, US Constitution and their case-law, specifically in relation to counter-terrorism and human rights. Taking as a starting point the widely accepted view that states confronted with terrorism must find a proper equilibrium between their respective obligations of preserving fundamental rights and fighting terrorism effectively, this book demonstrates how the design and enforcement of a human rights instrument may influence the result of that exercise. The book looks at the question of how a legal order's approach to the limitation of rights may shape decision-making trade-offs between the demands of liberty and the need to guarantee individual and collective security. Special attention is given to the difference between the adjudicative methods of balancing and categorization. The book challenges the conventional wisdom that individual rights, in times of crisis, are better served by the application of categorical rather than flexible models of limitation. In addition, the work considers the impact of a variety of other factors, including the discrepancies in enforcing an international convention as opposed to a national constitution and the use of emergency provisions permitting derogations from human rights obligations in time of war or a public emergency. Research questions are addressed through a comparative study of the terrorism-related restrictions on five fundamental rights protected under the European Convention on Human Rights and the US Constitution — the right to freedom of expression, the right to freedom of association, the right to personal liberty, the right to privacy, and the right to a fair trial. The book offers both a theoretical account of the paradoxical relationship between terrorism and human rights, and a comprehensive comparative survey of the major decisions of the highest courts on both sides of the Atlantic.

The historical records and stories of enslaved African women have both creative and life-affirming resistance strategies for how women of the past have dealt with and healed from violence. This book draws on mid-seventeenth to nineteenth-century slave narratives to describe the depths of multi-dimensional oppression and violence in the lives of enslaved African women. Harrison investigates pre-colonial West and West Central African women’s lives prior to European arrival in order to recover those African-derived aesthetic forms, cultural traditions, and religious practices that helped enslaved women combat violence and oppression. The nine strategies of resistance offered as modes of resistance employed by enslaved women are viable modes for modern-day women.

Before she was Wichita, Kansas, she was a collection of grass huts, home to the ancestors of the Wichita Indians. Then came the Spanish conquistadors, seeking gold but finding instead vast herds of buffalo.
After the Civil War, Wichita played host to a cavalcade of Western men: frontier soldiers, Indian warriors, buffalo hunters, border ruffians, hell-for-leather Texas cattle drovers, ready-to-die gunslingers, and steel-eyed lawmen. Peerless Princess of the Plains, they called her.
Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, and Bat Masterson were here, but so were Jesse Chisholm, Jack Ledford, Rowdy Joe and Rowdy Kate, Buffalo Bill Mathewson, Marshall Mike Meagher, Indian trader James Mead, Oklahoma Harry Hill, city founder Dutch Bill Greiffenstein, and a host of colorful characters like you’ve never known before.
Stan Hoig depicts a once-rambunctious cowtown on the Chisholm Cattle Trail, neighbor to the lawless Indian Territory, roaring and bucking through its Wild West days toward becoming a major American city.
Cowtown Wichita and the Wild, Wicked West provides tribute to those sometimes valiant, sometimes wicked, sometimes hilarious, and often audacious characters who played a role in shaping Wichita's past.

This book reveals that 1969-74 was a crucial period for the special relationship. The Heath Government attempted to reverse Britains decline as a great power by forging an American-European special relationship out of the Anglo-American relationship. Simultaneously the Nixon Administration tried to recoup the global position of the United States.

Benjamin Franklin may have been the most remarkable American ever to live: a printer, scientist, inventor, politician, diplomat, and--finally--an icon. His life was so sweeping that this comprehensive biography by H.W. Brands at times reads like a history of the United States during the 18th century. Franklin was at the center of America's transition from British colony to new nation, and was a kind of Founding Grandfather to the Founding Fathers; he was a full generation older than George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry, and they all viewed him with deep respect. "Of those patriots who made independence possible, none mattered more than Franklin, and only Washington mattered as much," writes Brands (author of a well-received Teddy Roosevelt biography, T.R.: The Last Romantic). Franklin was a complex character who sometimes came up a bit short in the personal virtue department, once commenting, "That hard-to-be-governed passion of youth had hurried me frequently into intrigues with low women that fell in my way." When he married, another woman was already pregnant with his child--a son he took into his home and had his wife raise.

Franklin is best remembered for other things, of course. His still-famous Poor Richard's Almanac helped him secure enough financial freedom as a printer to retire and devote himself to the study of electricity (which began, amusingly, with experiments on chickens). His mind never rested: He invented bifocals, the armonica (a musical instrument made primarily of glass), and, in old age, a mechanical arm that allowed him to reach books stored on high shelves. He served American interests as a diplomat in Europe; without him, France might not have intervened in the American Revolution. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. He possessed a sense of humor, too. In 1776, when John Hancock urged the colonies to "hang together," Franklin is said to have commented, "We must indeed all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately." Franklin's accomplishments were so numerous and varied that they threaten to read like a laundry list. Yet Brands pours them into an engrossing narrative, and they leap to life on these pages as the grand story of an exceptional man. The First American is an altogether excellent biography.

The author of Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors (2004) gives us another excellent volume of World War II naval history. His subject is now the heavy cruiser Houston--before the war, FDR's favorite ship for a Caribbean cruise and, in 1941, flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. Her crew was prewar navy almost to a man, as well as being part of the peculiar subculture of the Asiatic Fleet. When war came, the surface vessels of the fleet sailed south to join in the defense of the Dutch East Indies, which has been described as "a magnificent display of very bad strategy." Houston fought long and well, taking major damage in a Japanese air attack and fighting in the Battle of the Java Sea. She and HMS Perth encountered the Japanese invasion of Java, and both went down fighting. Most of Houston's crew went down with her or died as Japanese POWs. Drawing on the survivors' accounts and extensive published resources, Hornfischer has painted a compelling picture of one of the most gallant ships and one of the grimmest campaigns in American naval history. He has a positive genius for depicting the surface-warfare sailor in a tight spot. May he write long and give them more memorials.

It was 1934 and jobs were scarce. With so few prospects, Frank Davis joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) at age 18. For the next two years he worked in western North Carolina. Along with hundreds of other young men his age, he built hiking trails, roads, overlooks, and walls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In these pages, he records his experiences as he matured, learned a trade, and made lasting friendships.

This extraordinary scholarly work will help correct the widely held view that the New Deal is virtually a blank space in the history of modern environmentalism. In fact, the New Deal carried forward and greatly extended the work of the Progressive Conservation Era, and in many ways helped establish the foundation for the modern environmental movement.

The Pacific Northwest, with its giant trees, fascinating coastline, mighty Columbia River, and not-always-dormant volcanoes, has inspired a number of personal narratives. In this book, reminiscent of Ivan Doig's Winter Brothers ( LJ 10/15/80), New York Times reporter Egan interweaves personal experiences and conversations with observations of nature and historical information. He travels through Washington, Oregon, and southern Vancouver, following the route taken by an earlier traveler, Theodore Winthrop, 150 years ago. A conservationist ethic pervades the book; Egan discusses major problems such as the cutting of the forests. A nicely done narrative for the general reader.

In this unique gallery book, historical shots of people, cars, events, tracks, shops, and other NASCAR landmarks are paired with comparable modern shots to present a fascinating review of America’s top motorsport. See what Darlington looked like when it was built in 1950 compared to what it looks like now. Get a real sense of how pit stops have changed between 1949 and today. Compare a Ford stock car from 1962 with one from 2009. Nowhere else can NASCAR fans so graphically trace the evolution of their favorite motorsport.

Here are 19 backroads drives around Lake Michigan, showing you the grand lake as never before in this richly illustrated exploration of the Great Lake’s history, culture, ecology, and natural beauty. The big blue inland sea--the only Great Lake entirely within U.S. borders--appears here in all its natural diversity. These day trips take you to the ancient forests and vast sand dunes of Michigan and Wisconsin and on beautiful backroads in Illinois and Indiana. Lake Michigan Backroads conducts readers through the lake’s varied landscapes and seasons, pausing at popular and little-known destinations for a look into life on the lake then and now.

Here are the shining blue waters plied by the Chippewa and Menominee, by the Jesuits and the voyageurs, and by countless immigrants seeking a new life. And here, in brilliant photographs and historical images, in anecdotes and thoughtful text, are their stories, inextricable from the story of the Great Lake itself. Lake Michigan Backroads speaks eloquently of remarkable natural resources and great promise, of immigration and trade, of devastating storms and human calamity, and of the people and their love of the lake. And their story plays out against Robert Domm’s exquisite images, which evoke the lake’s greatness through its days of calm and of stormy fury, the play of sunlight on its surface and the sweep of its shore in both autumn finery and the restless ice of winter.

The prolific Booker contributes a valuable cultural critique of postmodernism in contemporary film. Building on the theory of Fredric Jameson, the author addresses such postmodern manifestations as the nostalgic use of music, fragmentation, hyperlink editing, and pastiche. Perhaps his most important contribution is his examination of individual postmodern filmmakers: Tim Burton, David Cronenberg, Joel and Ethan Coen, Brian De Palma, Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch, et al. Transforming the notion of the auteur, Booker demonstrates how these filmmakers are not necessarily visionary singular artists but directors who know how to borrow from the past in creative and, at times, unnerving ways. Postmodernism challenges the traditional notion of creativity in film production. Booker's discussion of the relationship between late capitalism and postmodern filmmaking introduces intriguing new questions about cinematic challenges to hegemony and ideology…. this volume is absolutely necessary for those interested in contemporary film. The passages on such individual postmodern films as Requiem for a Dream and The Man Who Wasn't There will inform and structure undergraduate research papers for a generation. Essential. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals.
