Aleksander Władimirowicz Rogożkin (ros. Алекса́ндр Влади́мирович Рого́жкин, ur. 3 października 1949 w Leningradzie) - rosyjski reżyser i scenarzysta filmowy.

Z wykształcenia jest historykiem, w latach 70. pracował w leningradzkiej telewizji i zespole filmowym Lenfilm. W 1982 ukończył studia filmowe na WGIK w Moskwie. Filmy kręcił jeszcze w czasach Związku Radzieckiego, jednak naprawdę popularny stał się dopiero po jego rozpadzie. Jest reżyserem wszechstronnym, w swoim dorobku ma komedie obnażające absurdy nowej Rosji (Osobliwości narodowego polowania (1995) i Osobliwości narodowego wędkarstwa (1998)), ale także dramat Posterunek (1998) opowiadający o oddziale żołnierzy rzuconych na samotną placówkę w górach Kaukazu oraz komediodramat Kukułka (2002) rozgrywający się jesienią 1944 na pograniczu fińsko-rosyjskim. Kukułka to historia specyficznego trójkąta miłosnego, który tworzą fiński i rosyjski żołnierz oraz młoda, od lat mieszkająca samotnie, Laponka.

The McDonaldization of Society is a 1993 book by sociologist George Ritzer.

In the book, Ritzer took central elements of the work of Max Weber, expanded and updated them, and produced a critical analysis of the impact of social structural change on human interaction and identity. The central theme in Weber's analysis of modern society was the process of rationalization; a far reaching process whereby traditional modes of thinking were being replaced by an ends/means analysis concerned with efficiency and formalized social control. For Weber, the archetypal manifestation of this process was the bureaucracy; a large, formal organization characterized by a hierarchical authority structure, well-established division of labor, written rules and regulations, impersonality and a concern for technical competence.

Bureaucratic organizations not only represent the process of rationalization, the structure they impose on human interaction and thinking furthers the process, leading to an increasingly rationalized world. The process affects all aspects of our everyday life. Ritzer suggests that in the later part of the 20th century the socially structured form of the fast-food restaurant has become the organizational force representing and extending the process of rationalization further into the realm of everyday interaction and individual identity. McDonald's serves as the case model of this process in the 1990s. The book introduced the term McDonaldization into learned discourse to describe mind-numbing sameness.

Lasch has touched a very sensitive social nerve in his book “The Culture Of Narcissism.” He gives the reader the awareness of living in a society that has become increasingly self-absorbed, out of touch with its past and future, and totally focused on the moment where everyone is seeking decadence and immediate self-gratification. I strongly believe that the narcissism in our culture is the direct result of the combination of consumerism and individualism that are both advocated for by the corporate elite and the politicians. One of the most confounding aspects of American society—the one that perhaps most frequently perplexes observers both domestic and foreign—is the vast contradiction between what anthropologists might term the “hot” and “cold” elements in the culture. The hot encompasses the dynamic and progressive aspects of a society dedicated to growth and productivity, marked by mobility, innovation, and optimism. In contrast, the cold embodies rigid social forms and archaic beliefs, fundamentalisms of all kinds, racism and xenophobia, anti-intellectualism, cultural atavism, and ignorance—in short, the primitive.

For cultural critic Paul Smith, the tension between progressive and primitive is a constitutive condition of American history and culture. In Primitive America, Smith contemplates this primary contradiction as it has played out in the years since 9/11. Indeed, he writes, much of what has happened since—events that have seemed to many to be novel and egregious—can be explained by this foundational dialectic.

More radically still, Primitive America attests that this underlying stress is driven by America’s unquestioned devotion to the elemental propositions and processes of capitalism. This devotion, Smith argues, has become America’s quintessential characteristic, and he begins this book by elaborating on the idea of the primitive in America—its specific history of capital accumulation, commodity fetishism, and cultural narcissism. Smith goes on to track the symptoms of the primitive that have arisen in the aftermath of 9/11 and the commencement of the “Long War” against “violent extremists”: the nature of American imperialism, the status of the U.S. Constitution, the militarization of America’s economy and culture, and the Bush administration’s disregard for human rights.

An urgent and important engagement with current American policies and practices, Primitive America is, at the same time, an incisive critique of the ideology that fuels the ethos of America’s capitalist culture.
