Utilizing evidence from numerous imperial cities, this book offers a new explanation for the spread and survival of urban reform during the sixteenth century. By analyzing the operation of regional political constellations, it reveals a common process of negotiation that shaped the Reformation in the Holy Roman Empire. It reevaluates traditional models of reform that leave unexplored the religious implications of flexible systems of communication and support among cities. Such networks influenced urban reform in fundamental ways, affecting how Protestant preachers moved from city to city, as well as what versions of the Reformation city councils introduced. This fusion of religion and politics meant that with local variations, negotiation within a regional framework sat at the heart of urban reform. The Negotiated Reformation therefore explains not only how the Reformation spread to almost every imperial city in southern Germany, but also how it survived imperial attempts to repress religious reform.

Empire of Magic presents a beginning and genealogy for medieval romance and the King Arthur legend through the history of Europe's encounters with the East in crusades, travel, missionizing, and empire formation. It also produces definitions of "race" and "nation" for the medieval period and argues that the Middle Ages and medieval fantasies of race and religion have recently returned.

Drawing on feminist and gender theory, as well as cultural analyses of race, class, and colonialism, this provocative book revises our understanding of the beginnings of the 900-year-old cultural genre we call romance, as well as the King Arthur legend. Geraldine Heng argues that romance arose in the twelfth century as a cultural response to the trauma and horror of taboo acts—in particular, the cannibalism committed by crusaders on the bodies of Muslim enemies in Syria during the First Crusade. From such encounters with the East, Heng suggests, sprang the fantastical episodes featuring King Arthur in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s chronicle, the History of the Kings of England, a work where history and fantasy collide and merge, each into the other, inventing crucial new examples and models for romances to come.

Count Ottokar Theobald Otto Maria Czernin von und zu Chudenitz (1872-1932) was a son of the Bohemian high aristocracy, in the diplomatic service of the Austro- Hungarian Empire and a politician during the time of World War I. In the years 1903 to 1913 he represented the Deutsche Volkspartei in the Bohemian state parliament and became a close advisor of archduke Franz Ferdinand, the successor to the throne of the Dual Monarchy. After the assassination at Sarajevo, which resulted in World War I, Karl I., the nephew of Franz Ferdinand, ascended the throne, and appointed Czernin as his minister for foreign affairs. By the end of the war in 1918 he was involved as a representative of Austria in the peace negotiations with Romania, Russia and Ukraine. He withdrew from his office in 1918 because of the Sixtus Affair. In 1919, Czernin wrote a book of memoirs of his days as an insider in the Austro-Hungarian political and diplomatic arenas during World War I, called Im Weltkrieg (In the World War); a look at the inside machinations of an ancient empire being pulled apart by war.
