James Aitken Wylie (1808-1890) was a Scottish historian of religion and Presbyterian minister. He was a prolific writer and is most famous for writing The History of Protestantism.

Wylie was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland and his father, James Aitken was an Auld Licht Anti-burgher minister in the Original Secession Church. Wylie was educated at Marischal College, University of Aberdeen where he stayed for three years before studying at St. Andrews under Thomas Chalmers. He followed his father's example, entering the Original Secession Divinity Hall, Edinburgh in 1827, and was ordained in 1831.

He became sub-editor of the Edinburgh Witness in 1846. In 1852, after joining the Free Church of Scotland, Wylie edited their Free Church Record until 1860.

He published his book The Papacy: its History, Dogmas, Genius, and Prospects in 1851, winning a prize of a hundred guineas from the Evangelical Alliance. The Protestant Institute appointed him Lecturer on Popery in 1860. He continued in this role until his death in 1890, publishing in 1888 his work The Papacy is the Antichrist. He died with his History of the Scottish Nation taken forward to 1286.

Aberdeen University awarded him an honorary doctorate (LL.D.) in 1856.

Wylie's classic work, The History of Protestantism, went out of print in the 1920s, although it was briefly reprinted in Northern Ireland in a two-volume reproduction in the late 20th century. It has received praise from a number of influential figures, including Ian Paisley. Th

Dictionaries and encyclopedias on this era proliferate. This volume aims "to provide both the beginner and the specialist with a single volume that presents a summary of current thought on the key protagonists, events and themes" in European history from c.400 to c.1500. The beginner will find about 1000 useful entries, strong on England and France, weak on Spain, Central and Eastern Europe; able on political but weak on social history (e.g., no entry on the family or on marriage). The brief bibliographical entries are very dated, showing scant familiarity with the huge recent American, German, and French scholarship. The illustrations are imaginatively selected but poorly captioned. Serious students should consult the 12-volume Dictionary of the Middle Ages ( LJ 2/1/83) . For others, Joseph Dahmus's Dictionary of Medieval Civilization ( LJ 10/1/84) should suffice.

The Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature includes around 700 entries, covering the time period roughly 500 to 1500 C.E. Entries include authors, works, genres, and other literary and historical terms that inform the literature of the period. The encyclopedia targets upper-level high-school students and lower-level undergraduates.

Alphabetical, cross-referenced entries are generally half a page to a page, and many are followed by bibliographies. Aids to access include a table of "Writers Covered, by Language of Composition" and an author time line. Each entry concludes with a bibliography, and a selected bibliography of more general reference works and primary and secondary sources rounds out the book.

Witers from 25 language are covered, representing a variety of African, east Asian, European, Indian subcontinent, and Middle Eastern cultures. (In contrast, the Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature, published by Greenwood in 2000, concentrates on British literature, with no entries for Chinese, Indian, and northern European literatures.) Entries on religious works and movements are included, although there are no general entries on homilies, monasteries, or the role of monks. Oddly, this volume expects students to look under Vulgate, The for an entry on the Bible.

Given the inclusion of such a wide range of cultures, translation and contact feature prominently. Also covered is the influence of women writers, including entries on individual women writers and overviews on women writers from some cultures.

The author is a seasoned scholar with the experience necessary for the undertaking. Expansive in breadth but still accessible, the Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature is recommended for high-school, public, and undergraduate libraries. It is an inclusive, easy-to-use volume providing a wide cross section of literature that challenges narrow views of the literature of the time.

This twelfth title in the Routledge Encyclopedias of the Middle Ages series is a bit of a departure. Instead of offering new material, it reprints entries from eight of the previous titles, among them Medieval France: An Encyclopedia (1995); Medieval Jewish Civilization: An Encyclopedia (2002); and Medieval Italy: An Encyclopedia (2003). As explained in the introduction, "the present volume is intended not only for students, librarians, teachers, and the general public, who may be interested in the Middle Ages but do not wish to purchase or sift through numerous individual encyclopedias, but also for medievalists and other scholars who want to have a reliable reference work easily at hand." In order "to preserve the integrity of the scholarship," none of the entries have been revised.

The 587 individuals represented here were selected based on "editorial sense of long-term importance and influence" as well as potential reader interest. Although inevitably most of the subjects are men--and men of some power, at that--an effort was made to provide balance by including figures for whom documentation is relatively sparse. Along with entries for Peter Abelard and Alfred the Great, there are entries for Dhuoda, "the only known female author of the Carolingian Renaissance," and Wiligelmus, "the first great Italian sculptor." Approximately 50 women are covered; fuller treatment of women during the period can be found in Women in the Middle Ages: An Encyclopedia. (Greenwood, 2004). In addition to the index, the volume comes with two useful finding aids: a "Thematic List of Entries" and a list of entries by region.

Although it is redundant, this encyclopedia still has many uses. It may not be essential for larger collections already owning the other titles in the series, but it's a good stand-alone tool for public and smaller academic libraries in need of a scholarly biographical resource on the Middle Ages.

Dubbed by the New York Times as "one of the most sought-after legal academics in the county," William Ian Miller presents the arcane worlds of the Old Norse studies in a way sure to attract the interest of a wide range of readers. Bloodtaking and Peacemaking delves beneath the chaos and brutality of the Norse world to discover a complex interplay of ordering and disordering impulses. Miller's unique and engaging readings of ancient Iceland's sagas and extensive legal code reconstruct and illuminate the society that produced them.
People in the saga world negotiated a maze of violent possibility, with strategies that frequently put life and limb in the balance. But there was a paradox in striking the balance--one could not get even without going one better. Miller shows how blood vengeance, law, and peacemaking were inextricably bound together in the feuding process.
This book offers fascinating insights into the politics of a stateless society, its methods of social control, and the role that a uniquely sophisticated and self-conscious law played in the construction of Icelandic society.

The expanded companion book to the #1 documentary film about 2012!
The 2012 meme has evolved beyond any debates about the relevance of the Maya Long Count calendar to the lives of contemporary human beings. 2012 is about us on planet Earth at this time.
December 21, 2012: will the world really change forever on this date, the end of a 5,125-year calendar last used over a thousand years ago?
Certainly Hollywood would like you to think so. Indeed, a not-so-small industry has arisen around the date, hawking everything from t-shirts to teleseminars.
Clearing a path between fantasy and reality, Alexandra Bruce surveys the entire 2012 landscape, asking questions such as:

* Is the Earth losing its Mojo?
* How did 2012 come to mean "The End of Time"?
* Did psychedelics facilitate the Maya "Cosmovision"?
* Should we worry about Earth Crustal Displacement?
* What the hell is "Planet X"?

Uniquely amongst a vast array of 2012 literature, this book features interviews with the leading experts—including Graham Hancock, John Major Jenkins, Daniel Pinchbeck and many others—and insightful, detailed analysis of the broad spectrum of opinion, debate, research and myth regarding the most compelling "end times" prediction of the 21st century.

The "Historical Dictionary of Ancient Egypt" is a quick and accurate ready reference for both the Egyptologist and the non-specialist. It presents the important people and places in ancient Egyptian history as well as those in the history of Egyptology. Coverage is given to ancient Egyptian rulers, bureaucrats, and commoners whose records have survived, to ancient society, religion, and gods, and to the people and places significant to modern archaeological discoveries and scholarship. An important part of this work, not featured in other dictionaries, is a detailed bibliography of the historic periods, archaeological sites, and other important aspects of ancient Egyptian studies. The bibliography presents the most up-to-date monographs on these themes, many of which have appeared only in recent years and may not be known to the public at large.

On a global scale, French culture has been disseminated at the highest level through the protocols of modern diplomacy, at an intellectual level through the dissemination of French ideas on every university campus, and on the level of everyday consumption through the aspirations of fashion designers and restauranteurs to capture the latest trends in couture or cuisine. The "Historical Dictionary of France" has the exceptional merit of distilling from the innumerable manifestations of "French-ness" those characteristics which give the country its unique identity. The book enables the non-specialist reader to understand how perceptions of France have been established abroad, and reminds the specialist reader of the forces that shaped modern France. The "Dictionary" provides invaluable tools such as a comprehensive chronology of French history, a separate guide to the succession of regimes and heads of state in France, and an introductory essay which situates France geographically, politically, economically, and culturally. The introductory essay evokes the challenges which have determined France's past and which will determine its future. Dictionary entries are arranged alphabetically, but were selected to constitute a coherent mosaic. Easy-to-use cross references enable the reader to chart the development of historical strands, from the emergence of creative forces in France embodied in art and literature, to the pursuit of political change that has brought France to its Fifth Republic. With a rich variety of entries supplemented by a well-researched bibliography, the reader is provided with the means to understand the unique combination of factors which make France, a country of modest dimensions, such a disproportionately large influence on the world.

Burma (Myanmar) is a country in crisis, and a political resolution to its problems of national unity seems unlikely to occur in the near future. The purpose of the Historical Dictionary of Burma (Myanmar) is to explain in depth the country's political crisis, while also providing detailed historical background. While paying much attention to the personalities and events of the 1962-1988 Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) period, the dictionary focuses on the events, institutions, and personalities of 1988, when a nationwide movement for democracy resulted in the collapse of the BSPP regime, and the post-1988 period, when Burma was ruled by a military junta, the State Law and Order Restoration Council, which, after 1997, changed its name to the State Peace and Development Council.

Through the use of maps, a list of acronyms, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, and events as well as political, economic, and social background, the history of this country is unfolded. Everything from major figures such as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, whose non-violent struggle for democracy won her the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, to the issue of economic sanctions versus "constructive engagement" is discussed in this important resource on Mainland Southeast Asia's largest country.

The "Historical Dictionary of Ancient Southeast Asia" by associate professor John Miksic appears to offer a "comprehensive picture of the region" combining many data with great scholarship and clarity of presentation. If you want to know immediately something about a construction or a ruler of ancient Southeast Asia, this beautiful monograph certainly will help you. The dictionary also contains a bibliography so a reader can find further references to the relevant literature. The dictionary covers many data including Vietnamese history that distinguishes it from the famous monograph of Georges Coedes "The Indianized States of Southeast Asia".
A great merit of Miksic's dictionary lies in its great objectivity as the author gives to his reader in the majority of cases well-established facts and tells about discussions between scholars.
Miksic's theory of ancient Southeast Asian history can be characterized as hermeneutic in some degree as he, following Oliver Wolters, uses the term mandala to conceptualize particular features of regional political and social structures. In fact, both scholars aim to describe the societies by their own terms.
But Miksic's theory differs from Wolters' as the former believes that the concept of Indianization is still useful for scholars because the process of Indianization was a common theme in regional developments like Christianization, Renaissance, and Enlightenment in Europe. Another theme was sea.
