In this full-length study of the early history of greed Richard Newhauser challenges the traditional view that avarice only became a dominant sin with the rise of a money economy. He shows that avaritia, the sin of greed for possessions, was dominant in a wide range of theological and literary texts from the first century CE, and that by the early Middle Ages avarice headed the list of vices for authors aiming to convert others from pagan materialism to Christian spirituality.

In Occupation, Eric Carlton explores the methods employed by dominant powers to ensure their supremacy and considers the critical relationship between military authority and civilian population. In exploring this complex relationship, Carlton covers both the nature of control and its practical implementation. Working from the premise that the ideology of the occupying power conditions the exercise of power and that control is gained either by compulsion or persuasion, he examines the options available to the aggressor nation in maintaining authority. These, he suggests, include both the use of force and the implementation of forms of social control - legal, moral and religious precepts - as well as the utilisation of the social norms of the occupied nation. In order to demonstrate the wide variety of control policies used Dr. Carlton presents a spectrum of case studies, with examples ranging from the Roman Empire to British colonialism in India and the exploitation of Peru by the Spanish. Particular attention is given to the Nazi atrocities of the Second World War, and to the moral aspects of military repression. In the light of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, which is discussed in a postscript, the relevance of an increased understanding of the nature of occupation is plain.

This book represents the first alternative approach to the study of workers' culture in Imperial Germany while at the same time providing the first comprehensive historical analysis of the emergence of Germany.s modern leisure industry. The second half of the nineteenth century witnessed Germany's transformation into a major industrial economy. The central concern of this book is the emergence of a distinct worker's culture which provided a disparate and heterogeneous working class with a focus of identity in an alien and hostile society. Focusing on the aspect of that culture--the leisure activities enjoyed by workers during their infrequent leisure time--and on two major cities, Bochum and Dusseldorf, this study traverses the gamut of popular amusements and recreations on offer from the popular festivals of the early industrial years, the pubs, Tingel-Tangles and dance-halls, the clubs and rational recreations, to the mass, commercial culture epitomized by the cinema shortly after the turn of the century.

Big businesses have faced a persistent dilemma in China since the nineteenth century: how to retain control over corporate hierarchies while adapting to local social networks. Sherman Cochran, in the first study to compare Western, Japanese, and Chinese businesses in Chinese history, shows how various businesses have struggled with this issue as they have adjusted to dramatic changes in Chinese society, politics, and foreign affairs. Cochran devotes a chapter each to six of the biggest business ventures in China before the Communist revolution: two Western-owned companies, Standard Oil and British-American Tobacco Company; two Japanese-owned companies, Mitsui Trading Company and Naigai Cotton Company; and two Chinese-owned firms, Shenxin Cotton Mills and China Match Company. In each case, he notes the businesses' efforts to introduce corporate hierarchies for managing the distribution of goods and the organization of factory workers, and he describes their encounters with a variety of Chinese social networks: tenacious factions of English-speaking compradors and powerful trade associations of non-English-speaking merchants channeling goods into the marketplace; and small cliques of independent labor bosses and big gangs of underworld figures controlling workers in the factories.

The Evolution of International Society describes and compares the changing rules and practices of ancient systems, showing their development within a spectrum ranging from loose international societies of many independent states ordered by some degree of hegemony, to tighter imperial systems tempered by some measure of autonomy. The book demonstrates in convincing detail that political entities have usually co-existed, not in an anarchic state of nature, but organized by agreed rules and practices that derive substantially from past experience. The author also shows that our present international society, although distinct, is only the latest in a series. Whether antiquities should be returned to the countries where they were found is one of the most urgent and controversial issues in the art world today, and it has pitted museums, private collectors, and dealers against source countries, archaeologists, and academics. Maintaining that the acquisition of undocumented antiquities by museums encourages the looting of archaeological sites, countries such as Italy, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, and China have claimed ancient artefacts as state property, called for their return from museums around the world, and passed laws against their future export. But in "Who Owns Antiquity?", one of the world's leading museum directors vigorously challenges this nationalistic position, arguing that it is damaging and often disingenuous. 'Antiquities', James Cuno argues, 'are the cultural property of all humankind', 'evidence of the world's ancient past and not that of a particular modern nation. They comprise antiquity, and antiquity knows no borders'.Cuno argues that nationalistic retention and reclamation policies impede common access to this common heritage and encourage a dubious and dangerous politicization of antiquities - and of culture itself. Antiquities need to be protected from looting but also from nationalistic identity politics. To do this, Cuno calls for measures to broaden rather than restrict international access to antiquities.

Virtually all discussions of the problematic character of youth and society in twentieth century Germany begin with the middle class Wandervogel and end with the Hitler Youth. In this revisionist study Derek S. Linton argues that youth emerged as an important social problem around 1900 without any reference to the Wandervogel. Instead, fears of socialism, urban disorder, mass culture, and youthful independence prompted Liberal social reformers to constitute young workers as a social problem. Linton traces the "natural history" of this social problem from recognition to institutional reform. He especially explores such institutions as mandatory evening vocational schools and adult sponsored youth clubs designed to integrate young workers in Wilhelmine society. Based on his analysis of youth reform, Linton ends by discussing some of the recent debates over the reformability of Imperial Germany and relations between the Empire and the Nazi regime.

Based on research in the regional capital of Palermo, this book suggests lessons regarding secretive organized crime: its capacity to reproduce a subculture of violence through time, its acquisition of a dense connective web of political and financial protectors during the Cold War era, and the sad reality that repressing it easily risks harming vulnerable people and communities. In 1666, King Charles II felt it necessary to reform Englishmen's dress by introducing a fashion that developed into the three-piece suit. We learn what inspired this royal revolution in masculine attire--and the reasons for its remarkable longevity--in David Kuchta's engaging and handsomely illustrated account. Between 1550 and 1850, Kuchta says, English upper- and middle-class men understood their authority to be based in part upon the display of masculine character: how they presented themselves in public and demonstrated their masculinity helped define their political legitimacy, moral authority, and economic utility. Much has been written about the ways political culture, religion, and economic theory helped shape ideals and practices of masculinity. Kuchta allows us to see the process working in reverse, in that masculine manners and habits of consumption in a patriarchal society contributed actively to people's understanding of what held England together. Kuchta shows not only how the ideology of modern English masculinity was a self-consciously political and public creation but also how such explicitly political decisions and values became internalized, personalized, and naturalized into everyday manners and habits.

While doing fieldwork in a village in east Madagascar that had suffered both heavy settler colonialism and a bloody anticolonial rebellion, Jennifer Cole found herself confronted by a puzzle. People in the area had lived through almost a century of intrusive French colonial rule, but they appeared to have forgotten the colonial period in their daily lives. Then, during democratic elections in 1992-93, the terrifying memories came flooding back. Cole asks, How do once-colonized peoples remember the colonial period? Drawing on a fine-grained ethnography of the social practices of remembering and forgetting in one community, she develops a practice-based approach to social memory.
