This is a highly original study of possession by demons and their exorcism, which was rife in early modern times, focussing on the place where they were most prevalent, France. Catholics at the time believed that the devil was present everywhere, in the rise of the heretics, in the activities of witches, and even in the bodies of the pious young women. The rite of exorcism was intended to heal the possessed and show the power of the church - but it generated as many problems as it resolved. Possessed nuns endured frequently violent exorcisms, exorcists were suspected of conjuring devils, and possession itself came to be seen as a form of holiness, elevating several women to the status of living saints. Sarah Ferber offers a challenging study of one of the most intriguing phenomena of early modern Europe; looking also at the present day, it argues that early modern conflicts over the devil still carry an unexpected force and significance for western Christianity.

Drawing from a rich array of visual and literary material from nineteenth-century Iran, this groundbreaking book rereads and rewrites the history of Iranian modernity through the lens of gender and sexuality. Peeling away notions of a rigid pre-modern Islamic gender system, Afsaneh Najmabadi provides a compelling demonstration of the centrality of gender and sexuality to the shaping of modern culture and politics in Iran and of how changes in ideas about gender and sexuality affected conceptions of beauty, love, homeland, marriage, education, and citizenship. She concludes with a provocative discussion of Iranian feminism and its role in that country's current culture wars. In addition to providing an important new perspective on Iranian history, Najmabadi skillfully demonstrates how using gender as an analytic category can provide insight into structures of hierarchy and power and thus into the organization of politics and social life.

Centre and Periphery explores the varying dynamic relationships that have developed between the center--seen not as a simple physical location, but as a base of power and influence--and the periphery of societies. It initiates a new worldwide debate within archaeology which illuminates our understanding of long-term social transformations in pre-capitalist societies. The contributors examine the mechanisms that reinforced inequalities in social relations, distribution of power, access to knowledge, control over symbolism and ritual, religious cults and even literacy. The implications for the archaeology of hierarchical societies are far-reaching. The book shows, through wide-ranging case studies, that the variety of material evidence discovered by archaeologists may reveal that in spite of the fact that peoples with a distinctive material culture were originally treated as homogenous, the rituals and political activities practiced by these peoples are, in many cases, unrepresentative of many groups within the community. The center of cultural practice differs fundamentally from the periphery.

Tension between colonizers and the colonized lies at the heart of this study. The colonial identity was founded in response to its difference from that of the native population and its 'dangerous' elements. Laws that were imposed by colonizers were therefore as much an attempt to confirm their own identity as to control the more dangerous elements of a potentially unruly populace. This, in turn, means that instead of Victorian England being the driving force behind colonial law, the reverse was true, with the tensions experienced in India having a direct effect on the British judicial system.Primary source material from both British Parliamentary Papers and colonial archive material is used to provide evidence of legal change and response. Evidence is presented on the shared experience of 'dangerous' groups of people in both India and in Victorian England, as well as unique information on the status of South Asians in Britain. A case-study on the process of criminalization on the Sansi in colonial Punjab provides a fascinating example of how criminality can be produced by the creation of stereotypes based on fear ('dangerousness'), and an illustration of how science and taxonomy assisted the law in constructing Victorian and colonial identities.

In comparison with the lavishly illustrated People of the Stone Age , Oxford's volume is less visually stunning but no less fascinating. Although confined to Europe (People embraced the world and ended with the agricultural revolution), its longer chronology, from the replacement of Neanderthals by, or their evolution into, modern humans 40,000 years ago to the fall of Rome, emcompasses the various ages, including the Paleolithic. To augment the scholarship, there are many glossy, informative illustrations. The writers, all affiliated with British universities, examine self-contained subjects with a degree of accessibility that should appeal to all archaeological tastes.

The consumption of psychoactive substances is as ancient as human societies themselves and characteristic of most cultures. These substances have been central to the formation of civilizations, the definition of cultural identities, and the growth of the world economy. Attention has been diverted away, however, from our understanding of their cultural and historical significance by the labelling of these substances as "legal" or "illegal." The central theme of Consuming Habits: Drugs in History and Anthropology is to establish that psychoactive substances are integral to the construction of culture, and a rich analytical category for the study of historical and cultural processes. This pioneering collection of original essays explores the rich analytical category of psychoactive substances from enlightening historical and anthropological perspectives. Essays cover periods from prehistory, to the early modern period, to the 19th and 20th centuries, and cultural settings including Europe, Papua New Guinea, North and South America, West Africa and Japan. Contributors focus upon substances such as opium, cocaine and heroin, as well as coffee, tea, tobacco, kola and betel nut--substances often not recognized for their psychoactive properties. Their challenging perspectives revitalize an agenda which has largely been set by politicians, pharmacologists and social scientists, contributing significantly to the contemporary debate on drugs.

This provocative work grapples with some of the most difficult issues in Aboriginal history, showing how they raise fundamental concerns about the nature of historical knowledge, truth, and authority. Discussions of such controversial questions as How many Aboriginal people were killed in frontier conflict and was it genocide? Was there ever a massacre at Risdon Cove in Tasmania? and Does Aboriginal oral history count as real history? attempt to shed some light an Australia's historical make-up.

From the middle of the sixteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, the Baltic sea was the scene of frequent conflicts between the powers that surrounded it. As the fortunes in the struggles changed, so did the composition of opposing alliances and the identity of the leading participants. Not only were there littoral states concerned by the outcome; other European states were anxious throughout the period with what went on in the Baltic, where the emergence of one dominant power could be potentially dangerous and where many had important comercial interests. War and Peace in the Baltic, 1560-1790 makes clear the causes and course of the conflicts and explains the varying fortunes of those involved. Stewart Oakley traces the emergence of Sweden, poor as it was in resources, as the leading power in the area in the early seventeenth century, the early unsuccessful attempts by the Muscovite state to break through to the Sea, the eventual collapse of Sweden's `empire' at the beginning of the eighteenth century and the final emergence of Russia as the leading player on the stage.

General Simon Bolivar (1783-1830), called El Liberator, and sometimes the "George Washington" of Latin America, was the leading hero of the Latin American independence movement. His victories over Spain won independence for Bolivia, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Bolivar became Columbia's first president in 1819. In 1822, he became dictator of Peru. Upper Peru became a separate state, which was named Bolivia in Bolivar's honor, in 1825. The constitution, which he drew up for Bolivia, is one of his most important political pronouncements. Today he is remembered throughout South America, and in Venezuela and Bolivia his birthday is a national holiday. Although Bolivar never prepared a systematic treatise, his essays, proclamations, and letters constitute some of the most eloquent writing not of the independence period alone, but of any period in Latin American history. His analysis of the region's fundamental problems, ideas on political organization and proposals for Latin American integration are relevant and widely read today, even among Latin Americans of all countries and of all political persuasions. The "Cartagena Letter," the "Jamaica Letter," and the "Angostura Address," are widely cited and reprinted.

This collection addresses the nature of trade, and the effects it had in cities throughout the ancient world, from the Bronze Age Near East to late Roman northern Italy, and challenges the received notion of the unsophisticated nature of early trade. The book explores a variety of aspects of ancient trade, a study of archaic central Italy which stresses the role of the artisan in social development, and a discussion of the complex issue of the exchange of grain between Athens and the Black Sea in the fifth and fourth centuries. A comprehensive and well-researched book, this volume employs the most current archaeological, papyrological, epigraphic and literary evidence to offer innovative and stimulating analyses of the importance and influence of trade in the ancient world.
