Słownik grecko-angielski, autorzy: Liddell/Scott.
"The Old Testament in Byzantium", edited by Paul Magdalino and Robert Nelson This volume contains selected papers from a December 2006 Dumbarton Oaks symposium that complemented an exhibition of early Bible manuscripts at the Freer Gallery and Sackler Gallery of Art titled “In the Beginning: Bibles before the Year 1000.” Speakers were invited to examine the use of the Greek Old Testament as a text, social practice, and cultural experience in the Byzantine Empire. Not only are reminiscences of the Old Testament ubiquitous in Byzantine literature and art, but the Byzantine people also revered and identified with Old Testament role models. The Old Testament connected Byzantium not only with its Christian neighbors but with Jewish and Muslim peoples as well. This widespread phenomenon has never received systematic investigation. The Old Testament in Byzantium considers the manifestations of the holy books in Byzantine manuscript illustration, architecture, and government, as well as in Jewish Bible translations and the construction of Muhammad’s character.
Warren Treadgold, "A History of Byzantine State and Society", Stanford University Press 1997 This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date history of Byzantium to appear in almost sixty years, and the first ever to cover both the Byzantine state and Byzantine society. It begins in a.d. 285, when the emperor Diocletian separated what became Byzantium from the western Roman Empire, and ends in 1461, when the last Byzantine outposts fell to the Ottoman Turks. Spanning twelve centuries and three continents, the Byzantine Empire linked the ancient and modern worlds, shaping and transmitting Greek, Roman, and Christian traditions—including the Greek classics, Roman law, and Christian theology—that remain vigorous today, not only in Eastern Europe and the Middle East but throughout Western civilization. Though in its politics Byzantium often resembled a third-world dictatorship, it has never yet been matched in maintaining a single state for so long, over a wide area inhabited by heterogeneous peoples. Drawing on a wealth of original sources and modern works, the author treats political and social developments as a single vivid story, told partly in detailed narrative and partly in essays that clarify long-term changes. He avoids stereotypes and rejects such old and new historical orthodoxies as the persistent weakness of the Byzantine economy and the pervasive importance of holy men in Late Antiquity. Without neglecting underlying social, cultural, and economic trends, the author shows the often crucial impact of nearly a hundred Byzantine emperors and emes. What the emperor or em did, or did not do, could rapidly confront ordinary Byzantines with economic ruin, new religious doctrines, or conquest by a foreign power. Much attention is paid to the complex life of the court and bureaucracy that has given us the adjective "byzantine." The major personalities include such famous names as Constantine, Justinian, Theodora, and Heraclius, along with lesser-known figures like Constans II, Irene, Basil II the Bulgar-Slayer, and Michael VIII Palaeologus. Byzantine civilization emerges as durable, creative, and realistic, overcoming repeated setbacks to remain prosperous almost to the end. With 221 illustrations and 18 maps that complement the text, A History of the Byzantine State and Society should long remain the standard history of Byzantium not just for students and scholars but for all readers.
A. A. Vasiliev, "History of the Byzantine Empire" The cultural and religious crisis through which the Roman Empire was passing in the fourth century is one of the most significant events in the history of the world. The old pagan culture came into collision with Christianity, which received official recognition during the reign of Constantine at the beginning of the fourth century and was declared the dominant State religion by Theodosius the Great at the end of that same century. It might have seemed at first that these two clashing elements, representing two diametrically opposed points of view, would never find a basis for mutual agreement. But Christianity and pagan Hellenism did intermix gradually to form a Christian-Greco-Eastern culture subsequently known as Byzantine. Its center was the new capital of the Roman Empire, Constantinople.
Donald M. Nicol, "The Immortal Emperor: The Life and Legend of Constantine Palaiologos, Last Emperor of the Romans", Cambridge University Press 1992 Constantine XI Palaiologos was the last Christian Emperor of Constantinople and Byzantium. In 1453, when Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks, he was last seen fighting at the city walls, but the actual circumstances of his death have remained surrounded in myth. In the years that followed it was said that he was not dead but sleeping - the 'immortal emperor' turned to marble, who would one day be awakened by an angel and drive the Turks out of his city and empire. Donald Nicol's book tells the gripping story of Constantine's life and death, and ends with an intriguing account of claims by reputed descendants of his family - some remarkably recent - to be heirs to the Byzantine throne.
"A Companion to Byzantium", edited by Liz James, Wiley-Blackwell Publishing 2010 From the time Constantine the Great moved the imperial capital from Rome to Constantinople in 330 A.D., until its fall to the Ottoman Turks eleven centuries later, Byzantium flourished as the most powerful empire in the world. The Eastern Roman Empire not only exerted profound influences on neighboring civilizations, but helped preserve the works and thoughts of the ancient Greeks and produced transcendent works of religious art. Recent scholarship has transformed the field of Byzantine studies and propelled it to the forefront of academia. Building on these recent developments, A Companion to Byzantium presents a comprehensive overview of the field. In 27 original essays, leading scholars from around the globe explore fascinating new approaches, areas of research, and methodologies on such topics as memory, the emotions, childhood, and beauty. A Companion to Byzantium sheds new light on the complexities of Byzantium and points to its legacy in contemporary art and culture.
Romilly J. H. Jenkins, "Studies on Byzantine History of the 9th and 10th Centuries", Variorum Reprints, London 1970 Romilly James Heald Jenkins was a scholar distinguished by his contribution to three separate, though related, fields: the archaeology of classical Greece; modern Greek poetry; and the study of medieval Byzantium. He was born in 1907 at Hitchin in England, and was educated at the Leys School and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, graduating in 1929 as the Chancellor's Classical Medallist. From 1930 to 1934 he was a student at the British School of Archaelogy in Athens, and took part in the excavations carried out under the School's auspices at Isthmia and Perachora. His interest in modern Greek literature resulted in his appointment in 1936 as Lewis Gibson Lecturer in Modern Greek at Cambridge University, a position he held for ten years. After serving in the Foreign Office during the war, he was elected in 1946 Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King's College, London University
"The Byzantine Aristocracy. IX to XIII Centuries" edited by Michael Angold, British Archaeological Reports 1984 The notion of aristocracy has been a godsend to modern historians : it is so admirably imprecise. It literally means the rule of the beat, but it leaves in doubt who are the best-fitted to rule; the assumption being that those who have power are best-fitted to exercise it. Aristocracy has therefore come to mean little more than a ruling class, but, because power so often descends within a family fro one generation to the next, the word is usually given hereditary overtones. Aristocracy and nobility are therefore often taken to be no more than different sides of the same coin. The formwer deals in the exercise of power, the latter in the qualities and the qualifications needed. A shift in the meaning of nobility will alter the character of aristocracy and vice versa.
