IPN i TVP przedstawiają program Bronisława Wildstein 'a pt.: Cienie PRL-u .

IPN i TVP przedstawiają program Bronisława Wildstein 'a pt.: Cienie PRL-u .

W świadomości Polaków dominują dwie skrajne opowieści o okrągłym stole . Jedna traktuje go jako miejsce narodzin polskiej demokracji .

IPN i TVP przedstawiają program Bronisława Wildstein 'a pt.: Cienie PRL-u .

Cristina Venegas - Digital Dilemmas, The State, th e Individual, and Digital Media in Cuba (2010).jpg

The contentious debate in Cuba over Internet use and digital media primarily focuses on three issues - maximizing the potential for economic and cultural development, establishing stronger ties to the outside world, and changing the hierarchy of control. A growing number of users decry censorship and insist on personal freedom in accessing the web, while the centrally managed system benefits the government in circumventing U.S. sanctions against the country and in controlling what limited capacity exists. "Digital Dilemmas" views Cuba from the Soviet Union's demise to the present, to assess how conflicts over media access play out in their both liberating and repressive potential. Drawing on extensive scholarship and interviews, Cristina Venegas questions myths of how Internet use necessarily fosters global democracy and reveals the impact of new technologies on the country's governance and culture. She includes film in the context of broader media history, as well as artistic practices such as digital art and networks of diasporic communities connected by the Web. This book is a model for understanding the geopolitic location of power relations in the age of digital information sharing.

Daniel Beer - Renovating Russia, The Human Science s and the Fate of Liberal Modernity, 1880-1930 (20 08).jpg

Communism - Books - Daniel Beer - Renovating Russia, The Human Science... and the Fate of Liberal Modernity, 1880-1930 2008.jpg

Renovating Russia is a richly comparative investigation of late Imperial and early Soviet medico-scientific theories of moral and social disorder. Daniel Beer argues that in the late Imperial years liberal psychiatrists, psychologists, and criminologists grappled with an intractable dilemma. They sought to renovate Russia, to forge a modern enlightened society governed by the rule of law, but they feared the backwardness, irrationality, and violent potential of the Russian masses. Situating their studies of degeneration, crime, mental illness, and crowd psychology in a pan-European context, Beer shows how liberals' fears of societal catastrophe were only heightened by the effects of industrial modernization and the rise of mass politics. In the wake of the orgy of violence that swept the Empire in the 1905 Revolution, these intellectual elites increasingly put their faith in coercive programs of scientific social engineering.
Their theories survived liberalism's political defeat in 1917 and meshed with the Bolsheviks' radical project for social transformation. They came to sanction the application of violent transformative measures against entire classes, culminating in the waves of state repression that accompanied forced industrialization and collectivization. Renovating Russia thus offers a powerful revisionist challenge to established views of the fate of liberalism in the Russian Revolution.

Golfo Alexopoulos - Stalin's Outcasts, Aliens, Cit izens, and the Soviet State, 1926-1936 (2003).jpg

"I served not in defense of the bourgeois order, but only for a crumb of bread since I was burdened with five small children."
"From 1923 to 1925 I worked as a musician but later my earnings weren't steady and I quickly stopped. Without an income to live on, I was drawn to the nonlaboring path."
"As a man almost completely illiterate and therefore not prepared for any kind of work, I was forced to return to my craft as a barber."
"I am as ignorant as a pipe."
Golfo Alexopoulos focuses on the lishentsy ("outcasts") of the interwar USSR to reveal the defining features of alien and citizen identities under Stalin's rule. Although portrayed as "bourgeois elements," lishentsy actually included a wide variety of people, including prostitutes, gamblers, tax evaders, embezzlers, and ethnic minorities, in particular, Jews. The poor, the weak, and the elderly were frequent targets of disenfranchisement, singled out by officials looking to conserve scarce resources or satisfy their superiors with long lists of discovered enemies.
Alexopoulos draws heavily on an untapped resource: an archive in western Siberia that contains over 100,000 individual petitions for reinstatement. Her analysis of these and many other documents concerning "class aliens" shows how Bolshevik leaders defined the body politic and how individuals experienced the Soviet state. Personal narratives with which individuals successfully appealed to officials for reinstatement allow an unusual view into the lives of "outcasts." From Kremlin leaders to marked aliens, many participated in identifying insiders and outsiders and challenging the terms of membership in Stalin's new society.

The demise of the French Communist Party (PCF) has been a recurrent feature of overviews of the Left in France for the past two decades, and yet the Communists survive. This study examines the factors that undermined the position of the PCF as the premier party of France, but also highlights the challenges that the party faces in a society disillusioned with politics, and the new strategies that it is developing in order to revive its fortunes.

Communism - Books - Mao Tse Tung - Maos Road to Power, Revolutionary W...gs 1912-1949, New Democracy 1939-1941, Vol.7 2004.jpg

By January 1939, following the Sixth Plenum, Mao had emerged as the most important single leader of the Chinese Communist Party, but had not yet reached the towering status that he achieved following the Rectification Campaign and the Seventh Congress. During the years 1939-1941, conditions became increasingly difficult for the Communists, both because of intensified Japanese efforts at "pacification", and because of deteriorating relations with the Guomindang. This volume contains extensive documentation about the Guomindang onslaught against the New Fourth Army in 1941, and Mao's response to it. It also examines foreign affairs, as Mao struggled to come to terms with contradictory developments such as the Nazi-Soviet pact of August 1939, the Soviet-Japanese non-aggression pact of April 1941, Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union, and war between Japan and the United States.

This is the first major study based on Soviet documents and revelations of the Soviet state security during the period 1939-1953--a period about which relatively little is known. The book documents the role of Stalin and the major players in massive crimes carried out during this period against the Soviet people. It also provides the first detailed biography of V. S. Abakumov, Minister of State Security, 1946-1951.

Communism - Books - Lisa A. Kirschenbaum - The Legacy of the Siege of ...ad, 1941-1995, Myth, Memories, and Monuments 2006.jpg

The siege of Leningrad constituted one of the most dramatic episodes of World War II, one that individuals and the state began to commemorate almost immediately. Official representations of 'heroic Leningrad' omitted and distorted a great deal. Nonetheless, survivors struggling to cope with painful memories often internalized, even if they did not completely accept, the state's myths, and they often found their own uses for the state's monuments. Tracing the overlap and interplay of individual memories and fifty years of Soviet mythmaking, the book contributes to understandings of both the power of Soviet identities and the de-legitimizing potential of the Soviet Union's chief legitimizing myths. Because besieged Leningrad blurred the boundaries between the largely male battlefront and the predominantly female home front, it offers a unique vantage point for a study of the gendered dimensions of the war experience, urban space, individual memory, and public commemoration.
